Congrats to giambino0522 for guessing my favorite quote from The Office which is, “I’m an early bird and a night owl. So I’m wise and I have worms.” I think it threw a lot of people off that my favorite quote came from Michael and not my favorite character Dwight.
Giambino0522 please email the contest coordinator at kennybarto@gmail.com with the address you want the prize mailed to. Hope you guys had fun.
Fun contest, Hughes. I hope you have more of them in the future!
Going to have to remember that quote, it’s a good one.
you know would be a cool giveaway
tickets to your 1st start at yankee stadium this year
I had no shot on that one, probably because my favorite show is The Wire. But I am starting to get into the office more, the original version was a lot darker but not as good.
http://bronx-bomberz.blogspot.com/
Congratulations dude!
Since you like th office so much, check out this site. It was designed by the web club (including me) and the video club made the videos. They are short clips of pictures at the school i go to. They are to the tune of the theme song for the office. Go Yanks!!!!
Im a freeking idiot- i forgot the link. It will be active soon and I will put it up then. Sorry!!!
Thanks for the contest Phil. I had a blast reading through all of the quotes!!! My buddy and I were cracking up at work as I was rattling them off…Congrats Giambino.
AWWWWWWW man!
Hahaha great contest Phil! I definitely thought your favorite quote would have come from Dwight. Michael is a quote machine though.
Ha…It’s fun.
great idea for a contest, phil.
I have a question for you. Last season, who on the team did you hang out with the most?
http://pgsportsworld.blogspot.com
Congrads to them, yeah I assumed it would be from Dwight. Either way the Office is a great show. I thought my time waisted watching it would finally come in handy lol, guess not.
Phil-
38pitches??? New York is better at everything…even Blogs…
Congrats giambino! Look forward to reading more, Phil.
Congrats Giambino, great contest Phil!
I was just wondering if anybody knows of any other player blogs like this one. This can be 4 the Yankees or any other team, thx!
Lucky guy, enjoy your prize dude!
and thanks for the contest opportunity phil!
Gratz bino. Hope i win the next Contest!!!
Guess I’ll have to start watching the Office now
(BTW you should totally watch House. It is the most amazing show ever…well, I think so, anyway).
Phil, who are your closest friends on the squad? Who helps you out the most?
Thanks and good luck this year.
Good luck on the upcoming season!
What a great idea, Phil. It would be good if you can make this type of contests often. Congrats, Giambino. You’re so lucky.
Hello Phil! I have a question… do you have facebook?
Great contest Phil! And I have to tell you I am so happy that it looks like you are going to stay in the Yankee family. See you in Tampa in March!!!
Thanks for the contest. Congrats to giambino0522 for winning.
Kevin
Phil, I love the blog and all, but don’t overdo it- remember that Carlos Zambrano got tennis elbow from spending too much time online!
Hey Phil, everyone… How about this Knobby story….
http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/2008/01/run-knobby-run.html
Run Chuck, run !
Hi Mr. Hughes. I liked the contest, what a very nice thing to do. I’m so glad you could take the time out of your busy schedule to keep in touch with us fans.
Congratulations Giambino. Yeah phil that was a pretty sick contest prize. I have never seen the office and so couldnt even try lol Maybe next time.
Congrats!
Thanks for the contest, Phil.

YAYYYY. this made my day bc i seriously never win anything.
:) smiley.
Phil…great contest…Look forward to seeing your first start on opening day at the Stadium. If that happens you will be a trivia question answer.
a cool prize would be setting me up with a couple of those hot groupies that I am sure you MLB players get. haha.
just for the record i am a lady!
(for those of you who miscontrued me as a guy lol)
Giambino: LMAO
we’re a rare breed…female baseball fans…
I personally don’t think it’s fair that Jason Giambi won the contest, shouldnt there be some sort of rule against current Yankee players taking part in it
Haha, just kidding, congrats giambino
indeed, rebecca … lol!
now to prevent any further misconceptions, i put up my picture
LMAO SETTES! HAHAHAHA
i unfortunately am not jason giambi, just a HUGE fan of his!
Phil,
Great blog! I am a huge Yankees fan and I hope you stay a Yankee because you are a great pitcher with a fantastic future!
i want a ball too
Very nice of you, Phil.
Great idea.
Congrats to the winner.
Congratulations Giambino. Awesome, awesome prize.
kindof random, but what are Cano and Cabrera like in real life? Are they truly best friends or is it media-hyped a la Clemens-Pettitte? Also, how hard would you say Melky throws? It’s got to be near 90…
That is a very cool prize! Congrats on the win!
Congrats! I am sure you will enjoy the prize.
Hi ~~
phi,
don’t lose ur humility. alot of players arent this cool to fans. when u win 20 games and become an ace, remember we’re all just people and we appreciate your conversing with us. i have a new favorite yanks.
Phil,
Awesome give a way, that was real cool of you to do. Hope you do that again and I look forward to reading throughout the season….
Phil, you are a true winner. Keep it up and you will replace Shelley as my fave… though there may be repercussions for that
I know “the office” quote contest is over, but here’s one of my favorites (its from a “recent” episode).
Toby: We had so many smores I finally had to say, ‘No more smores! No more smores!’
Congrats to the winner… I’m almost as die-hard of “The Office” fan as I love the Yankees. So the next contest like this is mine!! Lol
I’m ashamed to admit that I just found this blog, Phil… But I look forward to reading every word and participating when appropriate
Hey Phil, I was just at a lecture in Jersey with Brian Cashman and Theo Epstein as the speakers, and Cash said that “My strong recommendation is that we stick with our young pitching and keep it in-house.” Everyone cheered and he smiled as well. So you are in the clear buddy. Im so pumped having you in our rotation for good and now I can finally sleep at night.
First: Congrats, Giambino, and I too am a rarity: the female baseball fan.
Second:
Phil,
I just saw your comments on the official Yankee website, and I have to say that I’m not amazed, but, as a fan, I am entirely appreciative. I don’t think any player has ever been this thoughtful and open to their fanbase without some self-serving agenda. The fact that you’re so willing to let the millions of Yankee fans around the world know you, Phil Hughes, to such a degree is beyond wonderful.
I’m 19, and I’m completely bowled over by just how level-headed you are in the face of all this madness. I know that a) if I played on a professional baseball team, let alone the Yankees, b) had a near flawless minor league track record and 6.1 no-hit ML innings to my credit and c) had this many people fawning over me, I’d probably have an ego roughly the size of Eurasia.
To make a long story short: thank you for sharing your life with us, and thank you for not being even 1/100th as egomaniacal as many of us would be in your position.
Oh, and I have one more recommendation for your blog:
There’s a feature on Bronx Banter (Baseball Toaster) where they take a card and talk not only about the card, but the career of the player on it, and their context on their team. It’s all Yankees (obviously), but you could do it with all sorts of different players. I know you really like baseball cards, and you probably have a pretty sizeable collection. You wouldn’t have to write about their careers. What about, instead, you write about what made you pick up the card? Why do you like it? What’s the story of you and the card?
I collect postcards, and every one has a story. Baseball cards have statistical stories written on them, as well as personal stories for the collector. I think it would be amazing to hear about your own collection of cards and what it means to you.
Congrats Giambino, its good to see so many of my female brethren here.
Sircomstockload it’s awesome to hear that. I can’t wait forr opening day!
“You come at the King, you best not miss.” Bronxliaison knows that I’m talking about.
http://mvn.com/milb-yankees
I’m so happy a woman won this!!! Go ladies!
I don’t think female baseball fans, esp female Yankee fans, are all that rare. I’ve loved the boys in pinstripes all my life. There are a few Yankee meetup groups (on meetup.com) that seem to be half men/half women. We go to games and get together in Manhattan to watch games during the season. And we love the game of baseball we’re not just salivating over those fine young men.
Beth (insane female Yankee fan).
Congratulations!!
Nothing better than a hot chick who knows her baseball. Bless the gals out there like Giambino, Rebecca and YankeesChick!
Hey Phil, if you like comedy shows you should definitely check out It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia! Every person I introduce to this show ends up becoming obsessed with it, and with good reason. It’s pretty much Seinfeld on crack.
Congrats giambino0522 for winning the contest. Phil your definitely one of my favorite players now (and I’m not even a Yanks fan) by doing this blog and interacting with all your fans. Hope you can show everyone what you can do in a full season without any injury setting you back.
Phil, Good luck this year. I just read the new york post report of Mr Cashmans fund raiser last night. I hope he keeps you and the other young guns the Yanks have.
Congrats giambino0522, what an awesome prize! This blog was a great idea Phil, I hope you remain in Pinstripes till you retire!
I like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia too.
Hey Bronxballs, you forget me in the chick category.
Phil….loved hearing Cash last night (though I had to listen to Theo too)….he’s behind you guys all the way.
I’m sure you will have a great career anywhere but we want you here in NY. We love ya!
Phil…I just found your blog today. I have bookmarked it and will enjoy following it in the days ahead. Good luck in 2008!
Bigbronxballs: Why, thank you =D
Good to know some guys have their priorities straight
This is a nice blog. It cool that you give out contests.
if you’re a fan of the office you really need to give the show “arrested development.” everyone I know who is a fan of the office has loved arrested development. watch the first couple of the first season and i’m sure you’ll love it…its a show that you can watch an episode 10 times and still find something new and funny each time…and its a 162 + 11 game season!
thanks for the contest…hope this writer’s strike ends soon and we get some new office!
thanks again, everyone
…and thanks bigbronxballs!
can’t wait for the next contest!!!!
Hey Phil
Love the blog.
You going to catch John Legend tonight?
HAHA i can’t believe you won… thats awesome
congrats, and thanks to phil for running the contest
Congrats to giambino0522! I wish I knew about this site before the contest started! That is one sweet prize!
Yo Phil this is a sick blog i like it much better then Curt Schillings man his is horrible comepared to yours! i was wondering is your elbow fully recovered? i hope it is so you can start throwing those 96 MPH fastballs again like you were that first year.
Hey…speaking of the office and dwight, have you seen that nbc is having an auction with some office stuff in it. They’re selling Dwight’s bobblehead signed by Rainn Wilson and one of Dwight’s ugly gold short-sleeved shirt. Pretty funny stuff.
yankeefreak211- im in your boat- i found out about the contest when it was over
Phil,
as you can see from my log in, huge Yanks fan and big into the history of this franchise. I have to tell you I have not been this excited about the future of this team since Jeter and Mo, and Bernie, and Posada hit the scene!!
You, Joba, Kennedy, plus all the other great arms in the system that dont get mentioned, Sanchez,Olendorff to name a few. I never though I would say this but, NO SANTANA PLEASE!!! I I think if you took a pole of all Yanks fans we agree. I want to see you guys take us to the next level for years to come!! Good Luck Phil, just do what you do!!!
Wow, this whole Bern Baby Bern vs $Man feud is getting out of hand. Funny that Pete A is the only one on to it. Love that guy, Abraham. Even if he’s a Pats fan !
Your January calendar is wrong !!!!
Bad start guy!
The contest was a great idea, Phil. I’m surprised you don’t want to hang on to that ball though! Then again, I’m sure you’ll have plenty more postseason wins to come.
Phil,
I have two small kids that are 5 and 3 and took them to see their first game last year with you on the mound. I grew up to the likes of the Goose and the Gator. I am so looking forward to my kids having memories of you, Joba, and Ian. I hope and wish you tremendous luck, the three of you seem like such goo human beings and this sport is in such need of personalities like you. Keep up the good work, we’ll be rooting for you at the games!
GO GIANTS!!
Hello Phil I just wanted to tell you I’m the biggest diehard fan of the Yankees and I have been since the days of Donnie Baseball and Rickey Henderson, and Dave Winfield, and I feel you are the most talented pitcher I’ve seen come out of the bronx since a young Andy Petitte , I pray to god that they don’t trade you for Johan Santana because to me you Joba, and Ian are the future of this franchise and I for one don’t want to see any of you guys go. I know talent when I see it and I’ve seen you pitch in 10 minor league games and 3 major league games and you have it and joba and ian also have keep it up man I’m proud as hell these days to call myself a Yankee fan and keep friggin rockin to all that kick ass rock and metal bro love ya man!!!!
Phil -
Found your blog through Pete Abraham’s blog. Great info – especially that Q&A session.
If you like the US version of the Office, you might want to check out the British version, with Ricky Gervais. As the Brits would say, it’s brilliant
Two quick points:
How is Chris Garcia doing in his recovery from TJS and that knee injury? Is he in Tampa right now?
Alan Horne and Jeff Marquez must be pretty excited for 2008 – it sounds like both guys will get a chance to shine during spring training. Seems like both guys might get a shot in the Bronx soon – in the pen, or maybe even as spot starters in case of injuries. Any advice for either guy?
Congrats on the AMAZING piece of Yankeebilia. VERY nice of Phil to offer up such a cool piece of his young career to a fan. It is great to see pro athletes who TRUELY appreciate their fans.
Phil i used a Waiver on you in Fantasy baseball last season and have plans to maybe draft you in this upcoming draft….What kind of season do you think you are going to have?
Phil hows it going neat idea i just dumped my myspace account this is a safer way with my girlfriend (no drama with other chicks) Well hope you get to pitch when you come over to california (anaheim is closer to me) will be thinking of way get attention on the big sceen above the field! Might propose to my girl or something…
I think the constest was great. hopefully we can have more in the future
Here’s another Office quote just for fun:
“Actually, it’s polite to arrive early. And smart. Only really good friends show up early. Ergo de facto, go to a party early, become a really good friend.”
Have a great day bro.
Phil,
Are there personal statistical goals that you set for yourself? Will you sit down with Dave Eiland and Joe Girardi and discuss what is desired/expected of the upcoming season?
-Alex
I think this is great what you are doing with this blog. It’s only been a short time since you have made it and it’s already exciting to read.
Congratulations Giambino for winning the contest. Hope to see more contests along the road!
I don’t know if it’s possible, but Phil, a great giveaway would be All Star or Home Run Derby tickets. Just a thought.
Phil, I’d just like to let you know that all this Santana junk has made me appreciate and covet you in pinstripes all the more.
I can’t wait for you to show the league what you are all about this year!
Phil,
This is a great site. My question is. How you feel about the Red Sox? There are a lot of Yankee fans that hate the Red Sox. I have read some books about the rivarly and it seems that some people of the management share those feelings.
NICE!!!! PHIL STAYS IN PINSTRIPES!!! Mets trade for santana…
Glad you’ll still be around Phil. Though get ready for some high expectations come spring training.
OMG So happy Phil is staying. This news makes my week.
Phil now that the Mets have trade for Santana I just want to say that I am pumped up you being in pinstipes for hopefully a long time to come. Lets go Yankees!!!!!!!!!
Pop the champagne (aka: beer), because Phil is staying a Yankee for sure now!
Glad to see you are going to be with us all season!
Phew…I feel like we can all breathe easy now…it feels safe to say I look forward to seeing you as number 65 for a long time to come without jinxing it
Woo Hoo!!!! Thank God for the Mets (Yuck, yuck, yuck never thought I would ever say that lol )
Glad to see your staying Phil, i was hoping you’d be staying in pinstripes.
Can you please come out to a Trio song? That would make my year.
