Pretty cool thing the team is doing by playing an exhibition at Virginia Tech today. I didn’t make the trip because I pitch tomorrow but it would have been a neat thing to participate. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the victims. Be back later.

hey good luck tomorrow Phil.

Did you ever commit to a college that you would have gone to if you didnt get drafted? Ever wonder what it would have been like?

I agree. It is a great think that the organization and team is making this trip. What a boost for VT! We have always been a very generous and philanthropic organization. Sorry you didn’t have the chance to make the trip Phil.

Good luck tomorrow!

I agree as well, this act of kindness really shows the heart of the Yankees. Too bad you don’t get to go, but you can watch it on MLBtv today for free :) Good luck pitching tomorrow!

Great thing the Yanks are doing going to VT. Good luck tomorrow Phil!

Sorry you aren’t making the trip. I think it would have been great for the kids to talk to someone like you who’s just starting out in their career.

I’m proud of the Yankees for responding to the tragedy with more than just words of support or even money (although that’s wonderful too). Some people have no idea how much it will mean to these kids to meet the players or cheer on their team in a friendly contest. I hope this experience will erase a little bit of the sadness and fear they feel.

I have USC making it to the elite 8.
That would be a good run
Mayo is going to be a stud in the next level.
Good luck tomorrow.

Hey Phil, would one of those yankees VT hats be good for a contest?

Great thing the Yankees are doing. It really shows the class of the organization. Sorry you couldn’t make the trip and good luck tomorrow.
I got USC making the final four. I think Tim Floyd will set up a great defensive scheme against Kansas (and they always choke anyways).

Phil this is one of the many things the Yankees do that make me proud of been a lifetime fan. Sorry you didn’t get to make the trip but pitching tomorrow is important , so good luck tomorrow.

Yes USC is a good baseball school, so is LSU though last few years they have been mediocre.

Try watching Office Space, funny movie you will enjoy.

Good luck tomorrow.

Phil are those hats gonna be avilable for people to buy at say yankee stadium? they should sell those for the school to help raise money for the victims. you should also auction off some signed ones on here or give them away for a contest. we’d all love to help in anyway we can, and those hats r pretty sweet too.

18 03 2008

I actually have USC making the final four in one of my 3 brackets. Trying to find an upset to a #1 school. And if USC can play solid and not turn ball over they could make it that far. I do have UCLA winning it all though. Weird for me due to fact I live on east coast though.

18 03 2008

Its a great thing team is doing though playing at VT.
Way you’ve looked so far in Spring Phil I have to think you’re going to have that break out season. Is there any set goal as far as wins you have set for yourself?

I’d also like to share that a college friend of mine lost her brother in the VT shooting so it has hit home a little. I think its great that the yankees organization is paying tribute to VT and I hope it goes well for everyone.

great looking hats and a great thing the Yankees are doing by reaching out. Rest that arm, you need to get back into the swing of things and start mowing down some batters.

Hey Phil…is that the new floor in you place that you had put in recently (hat picture background)? Very nice.

Possible contest idea….who can predict the final score of the NCAA championship game (or closet to it)?

Please, please, please follow Andy’s lead the other day and dont ever be afraid of backing hitters like Papi off the plate with the inside pitch.

We’re all pulling for you and stay away from Farnsworth and Igawa.

Good luck tomorrow Phil i am sure that you will have a great outing. I think that you are the best pitcher the yankees have and I think that your Blog is really cool also.

How is your tranning schedule do you work harder as the season gets closer or are you now in a routine that you stick with throughout the year to maintain your fitness level?

How much of what you do in camp between now and the start of the season is trying new stuff pitches etc, how much is locking in the stuff that you will use during the season?

Hey Phil,

As a VT alum who still calls Blacksburg home, I just want to send along my appreciation for everything that the Yankees as an organization have done to help Hokie Nation heal from the events of last April. Mr. Steinbrenner showed the world what a classy organization the Yankees are with his charitable contribution to the families of the victims and the team coming to our little college town for a day is something that I’ll never forget. Pass along my sincere appreciation to the Yankees for a great event!

The Yankees did a tremendous thing today and I’m sure the VT Community will remember that forever. I’ll never forget what the Yankees meant to New York after September 11th. This is definitely another example of how baseball is so much more than just a game. Have a good night Phil and take care.

She didn’t calm down until she heard from her brother a few hours later. The game today just showed again how classy the Yankees are and how willing they are to help when needed.

Hi phil. Classy and beautiful thing your/our team did today. Tomorrow’s game is on MLB Tv so i’m so happy i’ll be able to watch you for the first time this spring. Not to much pressure on you i’ll just ask for 6 perfect innings. Kiddin. Just have fun and get ready for the regular season. great things are coming.

19 03 2008
usgrant

Great idea and great that NONE of the players whined or complained one bit. It must have been an honor. And you can see it was appreciated. Too bad you didn’t get to go because Virginia is a beautiful state. These are the things the Boss does. For all the pressure to win by him, he always has that tremendously charitable side and makes sure the Yankees are right there in helping out. I really think the Yankees were fortunate to get Steinbrenner as owner. And to think the Cleveland Indians could have had him! haha He’s the best owner in baseball and is always out to make efforts for his team to win and always there to give back to the community, which fans can appreciate because there are too many owners who really aren’t.

I just saw the photo gallery on the Hokie site (http://www.hokiesports.com/baseball/gallery/). In my 30 years (WOW) of being a Yankee fan I have never felt prouder of the team. What a fantastic way to bring some good news into this world. (You will note that the Red Sox couldn’t even get all their guys to visit a VA hospital.) Way to build some goodwill there. This was the “right thing” to do. I hope you let the team know how proud we all are of them. And they all looked so nice in their suits!

Hey Phil-

I had an idea for a contest, and I apologize if anyone brought this up as I haven’t read every comment on every post, but I was thinking you could have everyone pick who they think will win the NCAA tourney and then draw a winner from everyone who got it right. could be fun.

Thanks and good luck today!

Hey Phil, I know you don’t like to talk too much about the game on here and more about off the field stuff but I have a question. When it comes to spring training games, are you trying to work on things or are you going full out as if it was the regular season? Tonight for example, you let up some HR’s, where those pitches that you were working on and didn’t work and you may not have thrown if it was a “real” game or no? Not drilling on ya, just curious as to how it works in spring training, especially as it gets closer to the actual start of the season.

Phil,

Tough outing tonight. The great thing about spring training is that you can just tell everyone “Yeah I was only working on some pitches. I would never throw those in the regular season.”

I think pete was being sarcastic and ST games are sooo useless , and AROD is back to throwing side-armed to 2nd, perfect…..And one more note, Bobby Meacham SUCKS…i want larry bowa back..

Phil …

Can’t win ‘em all ….who really cares in Spring Training. As I said before …get all the kinks out now before the season starts. I have every confidence that you are going to be just what we need this year to get us to the top…along with Andy, Wang, Moose and Ian. Joba and Mariano at the end of the game …winning combination.

Come October …the Yanks will hush all the naysayers …with their performance.

Go Yankees 2008 !!!!

Trading Ike for Harden would be a disaster. Kennedy can give the Yankees about 200 Innings this year…NO WAY Harden comes close to that.

Ike is going to surprise a lot of people with just how good he is. He is not just a trade chip…

Exactly in 5 years of pitching he has never given 200 innings. His home era is almost a full run lower than his away. He pitches in a pitchers ball park. There is no way the Yankees would do this.

It is just nonsense spouted by the media.

not sure if you check this so late down the line, but hope you aren’t too hard on yourself. you know that it’s just a spring training game but I bet you’re still hard on yourself. we’re still rooting for you, no matter what. remeber that when you get a bunch of negativity from ignorant people. keep up the good work phil :) oh and if you’re looking for a good movie tonight, dan in real life is pretty funny!
take care.

We’ll get 195 out of Ian this year. Harden = BAD idea.

Ian’s a SERIOUS future star. He’ll be the next Mike Mussina. No way should the Yankees trade for him. Not for Harden.

Came back strong today P. Good luck next start.

It happens to everyone Phil, don’t worry. Its good for you to get into a slump now so you can find ways to get out of them.

Hey Phil bad day and we know you’ll put it behind you. When the season counts the W is what matters and the Yanks would have had it.
Aloha from the Big Island.

I think that hat would make a great price for a contest!

If you are a true baseball fan and watch spring training games, you KNOW that pitchers work on pitches in ST. Wang was throwing strikes the other day and he’s a groundball pitcher. Because he’s changing it up he also gave up runs he normally doesn’t. I think Wang needs to develop another pitch and it looks like he is trying to do just that.

People who get crazy over spring training esp with starting pitchers are naysayers and idiots. I can see lots of attention being given to the bullpen where guys are competing for jobs but starters should and are experimenting with all kinds of mechanics.

Regular veteran players (non-pitchers) don’t play much or try to do much unless they are coming back from injury or surgery. ST is a whole other animal.

Phil Hughes is going to be just fine. He’s got the stuff. Anyone who doubts it doesn’t know baseball. And anyone who reads Pete Abe regularly knows he believes in Phil and hates the “sky is falling” people so his remark was tongue in cheek. Phil has the stuff and will be lights out a lot this season and only get better as time goes on. Take that to the bank.

Phil:

Keep your head up my man. You have electric, big-league ready stuff man. Tough luck the last two starts, but it happens to EVERYBODY. Visualize that you’ll dominate and you will dominate!

Hey Phil, wats your plans for the weekend? I’m headed to the NY Auto Show and pretty excited. Have you ever went to one of those?

Phil, are you tuned into the NCAA action? Who’s your final 4? Who’s winning it all? I’ve got UNC, Kansas, Texas and UCLA with Kansas beating UCLA in the final. My guess is as good as anybody’s though seeing my wife won our family pool two years ago and she can’t tell you the difference between a Blue Devil and a Tar Heel.

My bro is headed to the Auto Show at the TUC also. Myself, not really into cars.

Hey Phil…tell your palsie walsies that they were terrific today. Especially Justin.
Do they sell Justin Rules tee’s by any chance? Wouldn’t they sell like hotcakes?lol
Have a nice day.

Phil, rough outing, shake it off. Pop fly homers aided by the wind, not that I saw any of them… just guessing. ;)

Other comments: No trading for Harden… I have him on my fantasy team (again) and hope I get something/anything out of him. They have to keep you, Ian and Joba for a long time!

Kansas will finally win a championship, over Memphis (NC, Xavier round out the Final Four).

Bethnyy: some of us are true fans but cant watch spring straining games, because we live in the middle of the woods where the only television we get is constant black and white reruns of Family Feud. ;)
