Hitting the Road
26 03 2008After tomorrow’s game we head to Miami to face the Marlins in our last 2 exhibition games. Then it’s on to New York to start the regular season. After all this build up from the offseason to Spring Training it’s finally time to get things going. I hope to keep up on the blog as much as possible during the year. Thanks for the continued support.
Sweet, cant wait for opening day! Im sure not enough people have wished you good luck, so I’ll add one. Hope you can keep this thing going, its great.
Good Luck!
Hiya Phil,
Hope all goes well this year.
Keep up the good work.
Other than baseball, any ideas on what NY has in store for you this year?
BTW, are you a NY Football Giants fan???
Have a great — and healthy — season, PH. Hope to see you on the mound in late October.
Best,
Tommy Himself

All the best for a wounderful season.
If you cannot keep up the blog how about you put your cell phone number up so we can all call and talk to you if we have any questions regarding your season or life in the bigs?

Yankees 2008 World Champions!!!
Go get ‘em Phil!!! Wishing you best of luck this upcoming season here from The OC!!!
Hope the trip goes and team does well, Phil. Not that beating the Marlins in preseason games is much of a tall order, but it’d be nice to stick it to Girardi’s old boss. Wonder how many of his ex-players come over to say hello.
Do you go straight to NY after Miami, or do you go back to Tampa to clean out lockers or apartments before leaving Florida?
Phil,
Enjoy Miami! Don’t party too much in South Beach… LOL I wish you all the best for this season. Enjoy your first of many Welcome home dinners and enjoy your first opening day! I know one day you will be pitching on Opening Day!
Take care-
Amy
Good luck to you this season, phil! we’ll be rooting for you hard! GO YANKEES!!!
Aw! Phil, you’re seriously the best. Best of luck as this rolls down the homestretch. Don’t worry about updating as much as you do now when the season starts.
How many crazy people have mailed you old egg salad yet?
I am so excited for this new season! I can’t wait to watch you, Joba, and Ian take the baseball world by storm, and watch the Yankees revert back to a farm driven club that has a shit load of home grown talent! You guys (along with Cano and Melky) are the next generation of Jeters, Posadas, and Riveras!! I also can’t wait to see how Alex does this year!!! Good luck!!!!!

Hey Phil:
Have you seen the Dunder Mifflin newsletter? It pretty funny and even has a movie review by Michael next time you are looking for a flick (see below).
http://www.dundermifflin.com/newsletter/scranton/scranton_032008.shtml
So I saw “Into the Wild” a couple of weeks ago, but I fell asleep about halfway through so I’m only going to review the first half of the movie. I liked it. Emily Hirsch stars as this preppy kid who decides to go on a journey after college. He gives up all of his stuff and leaves his family (I don’t blame him, they seemed pretty mean) and just takes off on an adventure around the world. I’ve wanted to do that sometimes. I’d never do it alone though. I’d want to take all of you guys with me, for different reasons. I’d take Jim because he’s always good to talk to; Pam because she’s good at organization so she could be my navigator; Andy because he can sing; Stanley because he’d scare all the bears away; Phyllis because she could knit me clothes if I run out; Kevin, Oscar, and Angela so they could keep track of my money; Kelly because her voice is really soothing; Creed because he’s been in a lot of forests before; Dwight because he’d whine too much if I didn’t take him along; and Meredith because if we ever needed to be rescued, the rescuers could just look for her hair. I would only bring Toby if I could leave him in the middle of the desert tied up on train tracks.
I bet the rest of the movie is a lot more exciting that the first half. I’ll tell you more about it when I get a chance to watch it.
Phil, I will be in Miami for both games, and I have to warn you I’m gonna try my best to seek you guys out for some signatures…you’re definitely on my list. How available do you think you guys are going to be for autographs, or pictures, or both?
Go get’m Phil, hope you have a great season, you could really help some of us fantasy nerds
I absolutely CANNOT wait to be in the ballpark Monday, beer in hand.
no matter what happens/ what I say about you this season, know that you are an excellent pitcher with the potential to be a real threat. Now prove it.
Good luck, have a good season and is there any news on how Brett Gardner is doing?
Good luck, Phil!

Good luck Phil, I’m expecting a good year from you. You are the future for the Yankees.
I was at the game yesterday with my brother and my cousin. I felt bad for Ian. It didn’t look like it was his best game. but anyway, hope everything goes well this season. The giants got a parade lets get the Yankees one too.
Well I wish you & everyone the best of luck.

I hope you have fun this year, phil
Opening Day !!!!! How sweet it is and I’ll be there …:o). It will be a bittersweet year with the closing of THE Yankee Stadium. I’m fortunate to be one of those who will attend the Final Opening Day and the Final Regular Season Game (hopefully NOT the final game …playoffs baby !!!).
I wish all the Yankees a productive but most importantly healthy season which leads us to the promised land….Championship 27. It definitely would be the most fitting way to say goodbye to the Cathedral of Baseball and to open up the doors to the new Yankee Stadium….the house that ???? built…we will just have to wait and see.
I have no doubt we will be very happy fans this year. Best of luck to you in particular Phil ….a great ballplayer and a terrific guy. See ya Monday !!!!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Yankees 2008 !!!!
don’t worry about us we will be here, concentrate on the game!!! Can’t wait to watch everyone on monday!!!!!

<a href=”http://www.thebaseballoutsider.comjaydestro at thebaseballoutsider.com
what’s up phil? looking forward to seeing you at the homecoming banquet sunday if youre there…peace
Hey Phil-
Can’t wait for Monday and the regular season (skipping class to see it)! Good luck to you and the rest of the Yanks this season! Hopefully I’ll get to see one of your starts (I’ll be at almost all the series away at the O’s…sadly I live close to the Orioles)! Good luck again!
-Kara
are you already thinking of things to do for rookie hazing? lol they got you guys good last year
that’s a good idea!…skip class
i hate recording games….somebody always tells me what happens lol much better to see them live
well i’m starting to feel “sick” cough cough….maybe i’m coming down with something? cough
It’s especially fantastic because I’m skipping accounting…fun subject.
Phil
Loved the “3 Amigos” interview with Kim Jones on YES. And tell Justin I said you’re not a nerd for blogging. He’s just jealous he didn’t think of it first.
Well Phil, there is little chance for me to be able to see you at the Stadium this year. But I will definitely wave every time y’all pass over Virginia airspace (LOL) and will try to make every game in Baltimore. And thank TPTB for mlb.tv.
(Dude, if I can’t wait for regular season to start, I can’t even imagine how y’all are feeling…
Leafs are out of the playoffs, so all the talk is the Blue Jays here in Toronto.
It’s gonna be nice when they get swept in the opening series.
You’re really wonderful for taking time out to spend time with your fans, Phil. You’re going to be very busy during the season, so don’t worry about spending time here; whatever time you are able to give us will be terrific. ST is really getting boring now - I’m ready for the season to start, aren’t you?!
Your fans love you even when you struggle, Phil - remember that and you’ll be just fine. I think that you are going to have an outstanding season…….good luck!
Only a few more days to opening day! Can’t wait! Wanna hear something hilarious? Every year for opening day I take the day off and me, my brother and a couple of friends make hot dogs, eat peanuts and cracker jacks and drink out of the giant cups we got at the stadium from our numberous visits! How dorky are we? But it’s so much fun!
Good luck this year, Phil! You’re gonna do great! Keep us posted with what’s going on in your life when you can…but we’ll understand you’re busy if you can’t blog as often.
Only thing is that spring will not quite be spring when you get up to New York! If only you bring up the weather with you, but it’s a sign it’s at least almost here. I don’t envy you having to play in that cold weather to start off though. But here’s to the Yankees wonderful last season in the House that Ruth Built! And I’m glad you stayed to be part of it, Phil! And thanks for keeping us updated as you do and letting us be part of your experience somehow. Looking forward to more.
Good Luck Phil,
It’s so great to know we have players that want to connect with the fans like you do. Enjoy opening day it will surely be a highlight for your career. Not quite as great as that first World Series victory in New York but still a definite moment to always remember.
I hope you have a great season this year, as a die hard Yankee Fan and to see all your hard work and dedication to the game pay off. I wish the best to joba and ian 2. All you go out and prove the media wrong and show what you rookies can do. Lets bring a 27th world championship to new york.
Best Of Luck,
#1 Yankee Fan
Good Luck Phil,
Wish you the best this season! I will be at the Stadium the first 5 games of the season. Do you know what game you will be starting? I guess, that all depends on the status of Pettitte. LET’S GO PHIL FRANCHISE!
Safe travels up North Phil. Enjoy the rest of your time down South with the warm weather. It’s been pretty chilly up here lately. Anyways, I’ve been waiting 6 long months for this!!! I’m so excited about the season getting under way. We’ll all be rooting for you Phil. Take care and have a good one.
I, too, loved the interview by Kim Jones. It captured your respective personalities. You need to convince JUSTIN and Ian to do a blog site OR create a joint THREE AMIGOS blog and take turns with entries. I think it could really catch on and you guys could really have a good time thinking about what kind of non-baseball topics to add to the site. I bet Ian and Joba have some interesting outside interests they could add to the mix. Just a thought. Something to entertain the fans and you guys on road trips.
Hey Phil looking forward to seeing you pitch this year. Stay healthy and good luck. By the way you were a steal in my fantasy baseball draft in the 10th you’ll look nice as a keeper next year. Have no mercy and can’t wait to see you get your first start in the playoffs this year and of course a ALCS would be nice too. Most importantly don’t read the Daily News or the NY Post remember us fans have faith in you stay strong and pitch within yourself and you’ll be fine.
D-
good luck phil
throw inside to ortiz and manny!
thanks
Good luck in the season! Can anyone say 15-20 wins?
Hey Phil,
Just wanted to chime in with everyone else in wishing you luck for this year. Like all young pitchers you will hit some bumps in the road but keep your chin up when those bumps occur. I think we all know that when all is said and done, you’re going to be a star.
And to echo what yanksphan wrote and expand a little, it’s not just Manny and Ortiz who you should throw inside to. You’re a power pitcher. Own the inside of the plate. Too often these days we see guys hanging over the plate where they are nearly in the strike zone. Anyone doing that should be given the “hint” that they are at risk if that’s how they are going to approach the game. Ortiz is a prime example. His front elbow is virtually over the plate. If nobody moves him back, he takes away the outside part of the plate. So don’t be afraid to move some people off the plate. They’ll get the hint pretty quickly when 95 mph comes through their kitchen!
There, I am sure you will now take the advice of a 34 year old ex high school pitcher! LOL. At least it makes me feel important!!
Good Luck this year Phil.
Phil this has been nice to read this spring. Thanks!
I wish you the best. Play the game, relax, enjoy yourself. Everything is going to be great. Yankee fans can be the best or the worst, don’t worry about them.
Let’s go Yanks!
Be yourself and rely on what got you there. Remember the things are have a positive impact on your life and hang loose with your buddies. Stay cool and keep the faith, it gets you through the tough times.
Best of luck to you, and the rest of our 2008 Yankee team!
Be tough, sometimes in the past, I don’t think our pitchers protected our batters enough.
Wish you luck for the season Phil.
Hey Phil~
All the BEST this year!! It is going to be so special WHEN WE WIN the WS in the House that Ruth built!! (Strong reasons make strong actions). What a way to end an era!
Thanks for sharing a part of yourself with the baseball fans! Be great in act, as you have been in thought. (somehow, I have a feeling that you will!!)
— Oh, and trexsky, (in reference to your previous comment) I LOVE the fact that you take work off, get together with your brothers and do all that fun stuff on Opening Day!! Baseball is THE BEST!! It always makes me happy…….
~Rebecca
Keep your head up Phil and remember, pitchers are the only players on the field that succeed. Everyone else fails 70% of the time.
Wishing you, and the rest of the Yankees, the best of luck on the 2008 season!Remember to have fun…enjoy the experience. The fans are behind you.
Go Yankees!!
I just read at the NY Times website that Matsui got married yesterday and that he, Abreu and Jeter had a bet over who would get married first
Hi Phil, cant wait for the new season.
Want to wish youa very good year for both you personally and teh team. I am very excited with our youth movement this season and the prospects down in the minors.
Look forward to all your posts.
Hi Phil,
Based on the latest news re: Pettitte’s back — It looks like your first game will be on April 3rd against the Rays…. As my luck would have it, it will also be MY first game of the season. I’ll be cheering for you and all the guys from just behind the Yankee dugout. I can’t wait! It’s been a long winter!!
Last year, Yankees played about .750 ball when I was in attendance, so you know it will be a great game. : )
See ya soon!!
ATTENTION LUCKY FANS THAT MAY HAVE SEASON TICKETS OR FOR THIS MATTER– ANY TICKETS( 2 ) THAT THEY WOULD WANT TO SELL TO A DIEHARD YANKEE FAN IN VA, THAT DEARLY DOES NOT WANT TO PAY FOR TICKETS IN THE NOSEBLEED SECTION THAT RUTH BUILT. JUST THOUGHT I WOULD CHECK TO SEE!!!! PHIL AGAIN GOOD LUCK—LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHING U ON EXTRA INNINGS IN HD…U THE MAN PHIL.
GO YANKS….. 08′ GOIN OUT WITH A BANG….
NYYFAN4LIFE
Would love to hear your reaction to Matsui’s bomb of a wedding announcement today! Did anyone see it coming?
Looking forward to the start of another season - good luck to you all! I’ll be watching every game via MLB.com, since I’m stuck in the baseball wasteland that is southwest Missouri. Thank God for the internet.
Hi Phil hope you have fun in Miami, don’t party too hard! See ya opening day, I have tickets. When do you pitch? Isn’t against the D-Rays or will you pitch the third game against the Blue Jays. I’ll miss your first start of the season then, because I only have tickets to the Friday game and opening day next week. Oh well I guess I’ll see Andy or IPK! Can’t go wrong with that.
I like your delivery this year, a lot cleaner. Good mechanics = good results! Keep working at it and hope you have a wonderful season.
Bleachers are better than nosebleed and the fans in the bleachers are so fun!!
If Pettite is pitching on the 3rd, that would mean he is pitching against the BlueJays. Awesome I get to see Phil pitch!
why would you rather see phil pitch over HGH?
surprise surprise, the infestation of dirty Boston fans spread far and wide.
Phil:
We’re from CT, but our 1st games this year are in St. Pete. See you in April. If you go 4th, that puts you on the hill the 14th. Hope to see a great game…
that is some bs that you’re not on the si baseball preciew cover
Seriously, it’s pretty fun seeing how Red Sox fans come up with new ways to trash the Yanks. Living in Rhode Island, I hear enough of that everyday, but I’m glad I could see some input from bosox. Thx, and keep it up. It’s always good to hear from you guys…
A couple more days! Cant wait to hear John Sterlings voice announcing Phil stepping onto the mound. Haven’t heard that voice in a while…
No Yankees games on T.V. here, so its the best I got.
I wish you the best of luck this season Phil!
Thank you again for taking the time to interact with the fans through your blog.
Phil- Thanks for the blog. Your (almost) daily updates will certainly be missed.
When the season starts, stay away from ESPN, NY sports talk radio, NY tabloids and bloggers (especially fan comments) except those from your own blog. They tend to overreact and make idiotic, unfounded assertions.
Just be yourself and enjoy the journey. Most of us already know you’ll be great; it will just be a matter of time.
Lastly, thanks in advance for being part of number 27! God bless.
-Adrienne from the Bronx
Phil….counting the days…dvr good to go. Do me a favor..
Tell Derek Jeter he was punked by Matsui..lol.
Don’t feel too much pressure, but you are on my fantasy team
Hey Phil, it’s going to be a great year this year! I want to wish you health and much success as you begin your first full season in pinstripes. There are people who doubt the dependability of the three amigos. But we have faith and are rooting for all of you to kick some serious butt!
hey phil were any of you guys invited to matsui’s wedding? lol
Phil,
I’ve got a great feeling about this season! Good luck and continue to make us all proud! I can’t wait for the April 19th game in Baltimore. I’m coming up from SC and meeting a good buddy there whose coming down from CT. Time to bring #27 home to the Bronx!
Hope u have a great season!! :-*)
Can’t wait to watch you pitch this year!!!
Go Yankees!!!
Good luck this season Phil.
Best wishes for a great season, Phil.
Good luck Phil. Go show’em why Santana is on the Mets and your the real Ace of New York. We’re all behind you. See you at the game Monday.Im sitting in the Left Feild Bleachers sec.55. I’ll wave.
And to the Redsox fans that invade here. You’ll never catch a real Yankee fan on a Redsox blog. Its nice to see you like to keep in touch with fans of the 26 time World Champs.
Hey Phil
Hope you read this………All the writers aren’t picking the Yankee’s Because of the youth………..Do your best
Bill
what do you think when you see yourself on TV?
Hey Phil,
I wish you luck this year. Its cool that you have a blog, and hope to see it updated throughout the season. I’ll see you on Monday!

HOW ABOUT A CONTEST TO WIN TICKETS TO SEE PHIL PITCH?
I hope Phil H. doesn’t mind that I’m going to do this here, but I’m guessing that all of you who read Phil’s blog would like a chance to win free tickets to see him pitch in his first start at the stadium this year. Since Phil has been running contests and giving free stuff away I’m going to assume he won’t have a problem with this.
I have season tickets to the Yankees and will not be using my tickets for the April 3 game at the stadium, which I believe will be Phil’s first start. I usually resell the tickets that I don’t use, but for some reason no one has been interested in them (maybe people don’t realize Phil is supposed to pitch this game). I could probably sell the tickets for really cheap, but I thought this would be a much better way to get rid of them. What do you think? (I’m going to assume that you all agree
I’ll be posting the contest later tonight and the winners will get 2 free tickets to see Phil pitch on April 3 (the tickets will only be for April 3 regardless of whether Phil actually ends up pitching that night). Since I have a number of tickets to get rid of, there will be multiple winners.
So, check back on the blog later tonight for the details on the contest. To narrow down (a little) when I’ll be doing this, I’ll be posting it after 8:00 pm EST on Sat, 3/29. The contest will be posted in the latest thread on the blog. If Phil doesn’t post a new entry then it will be in this thread. Otherwise it will be posted in the new thread (unless his new thread is for a contest that he’s running, then it will be in this thread - I don’t want to compete with Phil
OK, off to think about what the contest will be…
Phil V
Wow whats all the hate about? you’d never see a real yankee fan on a red sox blog? Its ok to hate the team, its not ok to hate the players. I like phil and i like what he does with hi
