Fun Weekend

6 02 2008

This Saturday I’m heading up to Daytona Beach with Shelley Duncan and Ian Kennedy for the Budweiser Shootout. I’ve never been to a Nascar event but I hear it’s a blast. Michael Waltrip offered to sponsor us for the day, so we get to go down to the garage, pit row, all that good stuff. Should be awesome! Any Nascar fans here?

Glad to hear Shelley’s alright. I have a feeling he’s gonna be chest bumping everyone in a nine mile radius while you guys from California just sit there and wonder what the hell is going on.

Nascar is a great sport to watch live. It’s a lot different live than it is on TV. Thanks so much Phil for creating this blog. It’s a great way for the fans to know what’s going on with you. How have the throwing sessions been going so far and how does your arm feel?

Hey Phil, Daytona is great and NASCAR really goes all out! You guys will have a blast and Michael Waltrip is one funny guy. Can’t wait for opening day. Take Care, Timmy Oz

I don’t think I’ve ever watched a Nascar race, but it sounds pretty fun, especially since you get to do all the behind the scenes stuff.

Hope you guys have a good time! 🙂

what the heck is nascar?

Seriously Nascar events are awesome! I had to work the Darlington 500 as a fund raiser for my college baseball team a couple years back. I will tell you if you are not going to be in the luxury box wear ear plugs it can get real loud…

Umm Phil be prepared to fall in love time and time again…nothing but hot girls everywhere…

Be careful there definitely will be some strange people there….

Hey Phil…have a great time. Shelly is another favorite Yankee in the lucky2bayankeefan household. Take Joba too, he seems like a fun guy to have around!

Don’t really do racing, but I went to a racetrack for the first time last weekend and had fun watching the crashes. Hope you have a great time!

Have fun phil. It is pretty cool to see the rookies go out together. Makes me pumped for the season.

sorry, but absolutely not! I hope you guys have a great time and I hear its actually fun live…but I can’t get myself into it! Hope Shelly is doing better and make sure he knows that he better kick some ass in Spring Training and be there opening day!

I am sure you will have a blast…I’m not a Nascar fan but I’ve dated guys who are. It seems like Jeff Gordon lovers versus Jeff Gordon haters is a Yankees/Red Sox type rivalry.

Tell Shelley we love him on the subway!!! I was in the same car as him last year and we were thrilled he was there with us. Ride the subway!!!

That’s awesome, Phil. I’m a huge fan of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. I’m jealous, I’ll be watching on TV. Hey Phil, any news on the number change?

I have to agree with nyyfan366265 – NASCAR is much better in person. I’ve only been to one event, but I did get to go for work – as a guest of Penske (yeah, I worked on the Penske file). Was cool to check out pit row, especially being down around the garages during happy hour.

Funny story – Some guy fell asleep (aka passed out) in the trailer area the night before the race and rolled onto his campfire…. third degree burns all over his legs. Have another Bud, bud.

Not so funny story – Man died of a heart attack the same night, also in the trailer area. Person who called 911 said he was near the trailer with the Jeff Gordon flag?!?!? Say what????

Hey Phil,

I always check out that map on the home page of your blog. Isn’t it crazy you get a bunch of hits from places like greece and india, UAE and china, i thinks its great that baseball is reaching so far across the globe and one little website can bring so many people together. Keep up the good work.

NASCAR in person is WAY better. When you feel it in your chest and see everything up close it is awesome. I think you’ll have a blast and I’ll be watching ti see if I see you guys.

I used to watch, then I stopped. I started casually watching again because I’m a big fan of Juan Pablo Montoya from his Formula One days.

Enjoy your weekend, now that Shelley’s arm is better I’m sure he’ll be happy to spread the arm bash love around!

I went to Dover last year. It’s actually alot of fun. I used to watch it weekly but its really gone down hill. Nascar has made alot of dumb moves.

Going to Nascar is great. I’ve only been to two races in Phoenix, but it made me a fan of the sport for life. There is nothing better then getting to the parking lot around 6:30 in the morning for a mid afternoon race and started to drink. People that I have met there are really nice. Don’t know about the “hot” chick factor. Maybe at some of the bigger races, but I haven’t seen many at Phoenix. Of course that is not to say that there are none, just not how many people seem to say there are.

I’ve never been down to the pits though, so I’m sure that will be a blast. No need in wearing ear plugs either. It really isn’t “that” loud.

Who all on here has a favorite nascar driver? Since I just recently got into it, as in only a few years ago, my favorite is Jeff Gordon, as a friend of mine liked him. Other favorites include Jimmy Johnson (he’s just too good), and out side of Hendricks, I’m a fan of Denny Hamlin. I absolutely hate the Busch brothers.

Go Duke.. Hahah. UNC sucks! Who cares if Lawson wasn’t playing, Duke still would have won anyways. Glad Dickey V is back.

Phil, have you had a chance to get us some photos of one of your pens? I can’t wait to see some of the Spring Training photos. Too bad I can’t see it in person this year.

7 02 2008
armand113

i’m more of a Formula 1 fan cuz they don’t drive in circles, but the last few laps of NASCAR does get quite exciting. And the crashes, despite them being scary until you see the guy get out of the car, are usually quite spectacular.

7 02 2008
ihateumps17

Ill be in Daytona that Saturday as well all though ill be driving through prolly stuck in a huge traffic jam as usual. Nascar Races are alot of fun I went to Watkins Glenn a few times and saw some exciting races. Have fun.

Can’t say I’ve ever been a fan of Nascar but I would appreciate having the ability of putting the petal to the metal and not having a police car on your arse! Damn speed limits, LOL. Sounds like you guys are going to have a great time and be right in the action.

Shel at a Nascar event? How fitting…

7 02 2008
hughesphranchise65

hey phil nascar is great live but unbearable on t.v. haha.

Quick question about spring training…How does your arm feel early, are you where you want to me at this point…ahead or behind. Do you think you will be able to work your velocity back up to 94-96. I distinctly remember you shaking off jorge in your almost no-no and then blowing away kenny lofton on a high 95 mph fastball that he had no chance on. Second question I pitched a no hitter in high school and i remember starting to think about with about 2 innings left…were you thinking about pitching a no hitter when you were through 6 1/3
just any thoughts on that day would be great.

Thanks for all the information Phil

Ahh NASCAR my favorite way to have a Sunday afternoon nap. We watch the begining of the race, fall aspleep wake up for the end. It makes the laps go faster. One of our cousins keeps telling us to go to Watkins Glenn, but we had a couple a busy summers. Someday I’ll get to see it live, never as a guest or anything. HS baseball in PA is getting closer so my year is going well.

7 02 2008
myspacecom15keys

Only men would create an event where you do well for driving around in a circles for 3 hrs. If it were designed by a woman after 3 laps she would pull over and ask for directions…………………BAM!

Not really a Nascar fan here, but I am sure if you are going for the first time and being sponsored and all you will get nice behind the scenes look, and it should be fun. Please share with us what you get to see..it should be interesting.

Hey Phil,
I never was a fan of Nascar until last year when me and a bunch of college buddies each picked a driver for the whole year to represent us. I picked Carl Edwards and suprisingly found it really fun and interesting to follow. Each Sat. or Sun. we’d get together and create a drinking game for each race…fun stuff lol

Never really got into NASCAR although we get two events in the Poconos every year. I just never saw the excitement in a bunch of guys making left turns for 3 1/2 hours to see who can get back to where they started the fastest. I’d rather watch Cannonball Run type races or some guy in a Trans Am and his buddy in an 18-wheeler trying to get a truckload of Coors from Texarkana, TX to Atlanta, GA in a ridiculous amount of time to get $80K from a big guy and little guy wearing matching suits, but that’s just me.

🙂

Phil,
I hope you have a great time with the guys at nascar. And I hope you get henns number because my friends bought me a henn jersey and if you get that number it would be tremendous. I must ask you a question which may be a tricky one for you to answer.
I want you to be honest. Do you think the Yankees organization would have benefited and been better off if you or Ian were involved in a Santana trade? I know I’m putting you in a tough spot here but think about it.

Phil,
If you guys want to come to the Daytona 500 the following weekend, let me know. I handle our NASCAR sponsorship for the No. 99 Office Depot team. You can meet our driver Carl Edwards (he does the back flip off the race car when he wins! and watch the race from the top of the pit box, hang out with the crew, etc. You can reach me at: mindy.kramer@officedepot.com

Johnny Damon, The Rocket, Josh Beckett…have all been to the Daytona 500 in the past few years. You, Shelly and Ian are baseball’s version of the Young Guns.

You’ll have a blast! Been to Charlotte twice and seeing is believing when it comes to that sport. It gave me a profound sense of respect for what they do after seeing it live, TV just doesn’t do it justice.

I have to follow up on what at least one other person asked here, and that is in regard to how you’re feeling at this point. How’s the arm? Have you gassed it out yet? Velocity where it was “pre-hammy” last year?

Take care of yourself, you are The Future!!!

I’ve never been able to be in one of the races… I;m from Panama and they have “pro” races there.. one my first day of college I asked my dad if he would support of me racing cars… Guess what he’s answer was… I;m the youngest in the family and I’m a girl so yeah…. But, I love feeling the motor when I drive over the speed limit (I do that back home, here in the US.. I’m scared to do so.. lol)… Anyway, enjoy your weekend!! I’m be showing my cousin DC…

Awesome deal! My mom lives a mile from the track in Daytona. When the races are on you can hear the roar of the engine. It’s very cool. Stop by for some cookies and milk for you, Ian and Shelley. Just tell Shelley not to kill her when he gives the high forearms! LOL!

Have a great time!

I’m a big Nascar fan and Michael is my favorite driver. He’s a great guy and very funny! There’s nothing like seeing a race in person and it’s even cooler when you get to see the teams working on the cars in the garage area and the at work during pit stops on pit road. Have fun!

I’ve been to Pocono and Dover but never been to Daytona. You should have a great time! We always get pit passes for the race because it’s half the fun. Being able to watch the inspections and the crews set up is really cool! Have a great time and if you can post some pictures when you get back that would be awesome!

Thanks again for the great blog! See you in Tampa next month!

People are totally insane over it. I was driving back from Baltimore and stopped at a bar along the way back. One tv had the Yankee game (which we were of course watching), the other had Nascar, most people in the bar were watching Nascar, I stuck up a converation with someone watching it. He said people camp out days in advance for it. It is a big event. They plan vacations around it.

I hope you have more important things to do, but if you ever decide to go to the Martinsville race, let me know. I live about 2 miles from the track and could give you some tips on where to stay, eat, etc. We’re in the middle of nowhere, so it’d be easy to get lost.
