Contest ideas

12 02 2008

Was wondering what type of format and prizes you guys would like to see out of the contests. I’ll most likely post a new one later tonight and wanted some ideas. I also am going to post some more pictures from Daytona.

What about a guess the number or something simple? OR How about a random drawing based on the comments we have made before since you had a random number pick type thing on your site before?

ckaftan

Small baseball trinkets. Like the game ball you used for your “The Office” contest. That was actually awesome to get a chance to try to win that first playoff game ball of yours. A ball you used to beat the Red Sox, or a ball you used to strike out 18 players, or even a game-worn hat. Just my two cents…

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

What about your big fan riverwolf2005 gets something because he posted 1st? LOL
Sorry man, I have been dying for a Phil Hughes something and when my TTM request was returned last year with no luck it was kinda depressing.

12 02 2008
mkennedy34

Another signed baseball would be cool or maybe some type of uniform thing (anything signed). maybe you ian and joba signed ball that would be cool.. good luck with number 34 now we can get our jerseys lol.

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

Actually Phil, when it comes to prizes ANYTHING is cool. I think you just offering is awesome. Not many are willing to do such things for fans. You KNOW people here would be stoked for anything you’d be willing to offer up.

giambinyy25fan

Phil… I’m sure you guys took some goofy/funny pictures over the weekend… perhaps you could have a contest for the best caption of a funny picture you’re in or took.

12 02 2008
peteglass

any cool game used stuff would be super duper sweet, but i mean thats asking alot, how bout anything with your fellow rookie joba’s name on it, or tickets woooo!!! or if i win you could write me a recommendation for me so i can get this internship at the hall of fame id kind of like that too…….

pete glass

p.s. hey who do you like in the election? my man obama just swept the Potomac region.

12 02 2008

or a shelly duncan power forearm

riverwolf2005

Maybe some kind of Phil Hughes art type contest for people to add in things they made of you. Not CPU Graphics tho since that is kinda easy, but something unique.

12 02 2008
philthy34

I don’t have any feedback on contests, but I do have a suggestion for the blog…any chance of getting some of the legends submitting some words of wisdom or funny stories along the way? I would love to hear any advice that Yogi or some of the other coaches share with you. Aside from that, just keep up the blog. You are providing a rare look inside the life of a New York Yankee. I can’t think of a prize that could be any better than that!

12 02 2008
jmac2336

I am a big fan of movie quotes. It might be tough b/c sometimes all you have to do is put the quote in Google and the movie comes up.

Another option is just trivia about the Yankees or your starts…for example What was the 2nd pitch you threw to the 3rd batter of the 6th inning of tonights game.

Phil I tried to post a picture of you from the Futures Game on here but it didn’t come up. I have access to lots of pictures of you. If you want me to send you some send me an email at jmckenna36@gmail.com.

ooo i know perfect prize idea, a michelle damon signed swimsuit issue…. huh huh i dont even think you could pull that one off phil

12 02 2008
ejg415

i like the ball signed by joba, ian and yourself idea. that would be an awesome prize.

12 02 2008
legendsfield

I would love a baseball signed by you ,Joba and Ian…(make everyone write in 30 words why they deserve the baseball)and why they think they are the biggest yankees fan…

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

No offense to Joba or Ian, but I would rather have Phil Phranchise by himself. If it was something of all 3 signed maybe 3 single signed things

(I know it is Franchise, but looked cooler my way)

12 02 2008
bronxbomba

personally i believe that anything you are willing to put as the prize is great. its nice enough that your interacting with the fans who post here, let alone giving out pieces of your memorabilia that you probably cherish. as for a contest idea, anything that requires no skill or knowledge whatsoever, because as we all know the internet has answers to everything. like with your quote contest, anyone could have won that, it wasnt a first to correctly answer trivia question wins.

12 02 2008
nyyfan5

Simple contests about some of your favorite things…show, food, movie, band/music, etc.

Signed or game used memorabilia are awesome prizes!

12 02 2008
bernbabybern

I think the fact that you have contests at all is a great thing – and that the prize in the first one was a ball used in a playoff game just blew a lot of people away.

As far as the prizes, I think most people would be thrilled with anything that you’ve scribbled your name on – photos, balls, whatever (and anything actually used in a game will probably make people drool uncontrollably).

I just want to say a sincere ‘thanks’ for doing stuff like this on the site. Seriously. It’s a very, very cool thing to do.

(Hmmmm. Tix to the final Stadium game a prize possibility? Don’t want to sound too greedy …πŸ˜‰ )

12 02 2008
eugiethegreat

Pairs of Yankees home game tickets (even bleachers!) as a prize would be sweet. It’s going to be hard for alot of us to see games this year because of the cost and hype.

12 02 2008
yankeegirl65

the contests should vary like make some easy n make some difficult so everyone has somewhat of a shot question for you though…whats you most treasured item that was given to you? like an autographed ball or something but hope to see some more pics and contests best of luck!

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

You want to know my personal dream items?

Either a pair of GU Spikes or a glove. Those would be cornerstones with my GU Clippers hat of Jeter and my Jerry Rice 75th Anniversary GU/Auto football in my curio cabinet. Those would be SO sweet with all of my signed jerseys and baseballs I have displayed.

Maybe that is a good contest Phil. What is your dream item. That way you can see what people would like and what you have.

12 02 2008
bosoxsucyanksroc

i like the idea of giving out tickets to one of your starts, especially since the last yr in yankee stadium
and a contest idea? I am not sure you are an Anchorman fan, but favorite quote from that movie would be awesome, since that is my favorite movie
haha my favorite quote
“San Diego, founded by the germans in 1904, they named San Diego which of course in german means a whales vagina”

12 02 2008
yankeesben

Phil, thanks again for sharing those things with your fans. I think anything signed from you is good. and I would like some baseball related trivia from yourself or just anything of baseball. Can’t wait to see you pitch again this season i really love the way you take on your game. Best of luck.

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

Here’s a link to my favorite Phil Huges item I own, because nobody else can have one.

12 02 2008
jdacunha

The contest you ran on beckett a few weeks ago was pretty challenging. It was having to guess Phil’s 1st roommate in the Yankees organization.

Random things like that are pretty cool. I guess anything that we wouldn’t be able to find online by googling it would be great.

ANY prize you are willing to offer would be fine!

We all appreciate the time you spend doing this!

Thanks Phil!

12 02 2008
nyyfan366265

Anything would be great. That game used ball you had from the ALDS was a really good idea, and so was the competition to win it. It’s fair for everyone. Great picture of you and Ian at the race. Hope you had a great time. Enjoy Florida.

12 02 2008
jdacunha

I have a ? for you Phil….Are any other Yankees into collecting cards like you are?

12 02 2008
kimmyankees

Just make the contest easy so I have a chance to win Mr. Hughes

12 02 2008
jetersgangster

Good question. I have no idea.

How about you pick a number between 1 and 10 and we have to guess it. I’ll go with 3.

http://respectjetersgangster.blogspot.com

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

I will take #5 if it goes that route, LOL

12 02 2008
diamond23dust

hmm…how about some kind of trivia?
like, if you give some random facts about a teammate (not stuff you can easily find online) and we have to guess who it is.

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

All I ask is that it is not something where the fastest typer wins. But it is YOUR contest

12 02 2008
diamond23dust

or some trivia about you

12 02 2008
hsquad71

Phil, how about a lunch with Phil Hughes thing in the city somewhere? that would be pretty darn cool. i dont know what you could use as the criteria to win this prize, but maybe someone can come up with something. of course, you would have to be willing to do something like this, but i think most of the bloggers here would love to be able to meet you and talk baseball.

hope all is well and stay healthy!

12 02 2008
riverwolf2005

The only problem with the meet Phil tings for a contest is many of us do not live in NY so that is really kinda hard, even tho it would be a SWEET prize!!!

12 02 2008
betsypaige

I like a Yankee trivia game or any kind of trivia, actually. Whatever you think would be fun is very likely something we would think is fun – so go with your gut. Same with the prizes – it’s just terrific that you are taking the time to do this for your fans, Phil. No matter what happens, you now have an ever-loyal fan base who will thrill to every height you hit in your career.

One thing I ask: please let the contest stay open for at least a full day so that us poor people who can not log on at work can have an equal chance to win, LOL.

12 02 2008
yankeesfan239

The only thing i can thing of for a contest is some kind of movie, or baseball trivia, and i think a cool prize would be is a signed number 34 jersey,or game worn cleats. Also I hope you enjoyed the bud shootout,i sure did

12 02 2008
davej480

Prizes for contest: Winners gets to pick a red sox player you hit with a pitch. Of course signed things are always cool, but how about having two signed pictures or something. One made out to the winner, and one made out to a winner’s friend/brother/sister/father/etc. Especially if it had a more personal message on it, I think that would be a very cool gift for one to receive. Another would be an autograph from someone else on the team (if possible).

Phil: Do you work with any charities at all? Do you plan on it? Ever think of getting involved with the strike out for troops charity? Also, do you play any video games at all? If so, which ones?

12 02 2008
manimal529

Autographed stuff and I WANT YOUR GAMERTAG =[ Those are good prizes.

As for the actual contests its up to you to be creative.

Can you tell I wanna win.πŸ˜‰

davej480 said: “Winners gets to pick a red sox player you hit with a pitch.”

– I think you’re onto something there … (although if Youkilis is reading this, you just pissed him off. Of course, pissing off Red Sox is a good thing).

yea, i wonder if it’ll be up tonight or tomorrow?

12 02 2008
jetersgangster

I would think the problem with the dinner with Phil Hughes idea is that he would actually have to sit through a dinner with one of us. I feel like I wouldn’t have anything to say accept How’s the arm? You pitch well. How ’bout them Yanks? Do you respect Jeter’s gangster? You know the usual dinner conversation topics.

Phil, anything is great. I am simply loving the blog.

12 02 2008
yankeechic26

any fan that has ever watched you pitch would take anything from a smelly old sock, a dish towel, carpet fibers from your new floor, a toe nail clipping… oh, wait, that might be a little gross!!! I don’t think any one of us would be too picky when it comes to the prize, as long as you keep blogging! The chance to play catch at spring training? maybe I’m just being selfish?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

12 02 2008
pinstripedplayer

how ’bout this idea for a winner (pick your contest)

The Winner’s name is mentioned and acknowledge on a YES interview or some other weekly YES show, as the ‘Core of your Fan Base…etc..’… Gotta tell ya – I’D feel like a MAJOR winner if Phil ‘The Franchise’ just mentioned MY NAME on television to all the Yankees Fans out there as his ‘Core Fan…. ‘ (or some other facsimile.)

Not a bad idea, really. You can start with me.

*** added bonus – your hits on the site go sky high, and your actual CASH payout to the winner – NOTHING!

* * * * * * * *

Runner Up Idea…
… would LOVE to be able to meet Hilary
… DUFF, That Is!

Anyway, Thanks for the site Phil – Good Luck this year – I’m looking forward to it.

Phil Hartman was AMAZING in that show.

how about best picture contest. basically who ever can come up with the best picture of why the deserve a prize from your contest. in the picture they gotta hold a sign, strike a pose, do something that is associated with why they are your fan and why they deserve the prize.

13 02 2008
usgrant

Anything you offer up would be fine. I think it’s great you not only blog and let us know what’s going on with you, but are giving us a chance to win something from you. You’re a great one, Phil!

13 02 2008
theansky

I gotta say, the last contest was far and away the best ive seen on the interweb. Its not every day that kind of memorabilia goes up like that. Plus its not some third party thing, its offered by the player AND author.

I think you’ve got a good thing going as is.

13 02 2008
Kaitlin

Format: favorite movie lines (in a given movie, obviously), favorite book, favorite lyric in a given song (this is getting awfully repetitive), having to guess who your first Yankee-org roommate was, or which MiLB city was your least favorite to visit, or which Bond movie you like best (you’ve got to like Bond movies, everyone likes Bond movies), or what recipe from Good Eats you tried first or which recipe you failed/succeeded at worst/best. I’m a very creative person. Asking these types of questions is asking for trouble. Oooh, you could do something really hard, like which minor leaguer did you least want to face, or who was your toughest minor league out. That would take three or four days to figure out after we cause the MiLB/Baseball-Reference site to crash from trying to access the gamelogs all at once.

Prizes: Anything signed. Okay, not anything. Because a signed Phil Hughes dish-towel is not my idea of a prize. But nothing that compromises you or puts you afoul of the FO. Ha! You know what would be truly awesome, but you’d spend the whole time getting over the fawning? You could give someone a chance to IM with you for like 15-20 minutes. I hope, that like me, you have 4 or 5 usernames (so you could always switch/avoid the screen name). That would be an awesome, awesome prize. Maybe a signed pic or Phil Hughes baseball card? I’m bad at the prize thing. Ask me more about formats.πŸ˜›

Hi Phil,

I’m all for having a contest but the more in depth the trivia, the more it eliminates people. If you have a HUGE fan, they will probably win every trivia contest. The idea is to have as many people as possible entering it.
You can’t effectively just have people make a post to a specific thread because people will be making new identities to enhance their chance at winning. People will stoop to new levels sometimes. Let’s keep it simple and fair.
So I propose you this: take a random thread from the past and select a person from it. This allows everyone to have a fair chance and makes everyone continue coming back to your blog and posting.
If you want to have a monthly contest, when a month is over, announce the contest, select the thread and people will know if they have a chance at winning. The more they post, the better their chance.
Now, as far as prizes, it’s totally up to you but I think personalized autographed baseballs are awesome. They allow us fans to have something personal and eliminate people from trying to sell things they might win.
Another thought is this. Take all the people who won something along the way, throws their names into a special contest at the end of the year for something SPECIAL. It’s the last year for the stadium so I’m sure you could find something incredible.

I have lots of ideas and suggestions so shoot me an email if you need some help.

I LOVED The Office contest because it was hard to figure out and there was a red herring in that Dwight is your favorite character but the line came from Michael. Do you like other quirky shows like Arrested Development or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? (Two of my favorites) or HBO shows or anything like that.

There was NO WAY to look up your favorite line on the internet (there is now) so maybe something no one knows either books, movies, songs, tv shows, or sports teams. Any Yankee trivia would be easy to figure out for diehard fans. I loved The Office contest because not only did I get to guess but I got to read these great and funny lines!

As for prizes, I would love a ball signed by all the rookies, you, Ian, Joba, Shelley. Or a ticket to a game would be nice. πŸ™‚ Even though I’m a season ticket holder I bet you could upgrade my seat. πŸ™‚

Love your blog Phil!!!!!

Actually I thought of something more fun/dangerous. The next winner should get one Bash Brother thing that Shelley does w/ Jason…From Shelley though.
Whoever wins may be typing on this blog with one arm after that…

How about being a guest at the 2008 Home Run Derby or All Star Game?

Some people are asking for outrageous things,,

How about just a night out talking baseball in NYC. Also, check out my blog at knapp002.wordpress.com

it should be something baseball related, but not something u can look up i think.

13 02 2008

like legendsfield said it should be a simple prize for entering a contest for free on a website a baseball with Phil’s signature would be an awesome prize not many players do this so any prize is great!

13 02 2008
nyyjack

Hi Phil – Love your blog and fan involvement! The prize I’d love is an autographed baseball card, preferably from your rookie year but I’d be thrilled to get whatever you’d be willing to give. The contest might be something like first person to come closest to guessing the number of batters you strike out your first start during spring training. Another idea might be first to guess the number of strikes/balls/pitches you throw your first start.

I’m really happy you’re staying with the Yankees! I’ sure this will work our well for us!

What about guess your favorite athlete in NHL/NBA/NFL/. It might be fun, and it would really be based on luck, unlike some graphics competition or whatever(where people with the best image software will have the best chance at winning).

For a prize, two tickets to a Yankee game, or something signed by you(like a baseball, or a glove or something). Or maybe just having the chance to be affliated on this blog for a month(I have a site that I would love to be placed on this blog somewhere, even if it is for a week or something)

For a contest, it should be something that everyone has a fair shot in doing(i.e. not a graphics contest, where people with great image software will have a HUGE advantage). Being fair is all I am concerned with

As for prizes, don’t go out of your way here Phil. I am sure anyone here would be happy with a signature ball/glove from you. However, my ideal prize would be having my website be posted on your blog for a month(or however long you would allow it to be posted here, and if you would join it, that would be even better!). With that said, if you want to let the winner meet you after a Yankee game one day, I wouldn’t be against itπŸ˜€

13 02 2008

How about just you posting our site(if the winner has a site) on your blog for a designated period of time. Or if they have a site where members can sign up, how about you sign up on one’s siteπŸ˜€

That would be my ideal prize

I think an awesome prize would be a free “send-in signing” where the winner got to send in 2-3 or so items of their choice to get signed. That would be really fun. In terms of contests, I have no idea. How about winner of the NBA All-Star game and MVP of the game? or something, that would be cool.

well phil let me start off by saying number 65 or 34 u will still pitch amazing,
i live in Scranton PA it was an honor to watch u pitch and you make the game more exiting! i am only 15 but i love the Yankees i looked on the internet everyday to see what was happening with you and the twins. You would have been a huge huge loss to the Yankees. My little Brother And me like to collect auto’s of baseball players and i wasn’t able to get your’s when you were here.
i always wanted arod and jeter and your auto.

Now for the contest i have so many idea’s for you
one my little brother and i like to play a game called initial baseball. it is you give the initials of players in any sport baseball, basketball, football, and nascar.

another one is Yankees trivia from past and future.

MLB Jeopardy

Prizes: spend the day with you, autographs of you the team or hall of fame players, video games or systems-PS2,Ps3, Wii, Xbox, tickets, jerseys, bats, baseballs, hats, posters, Fan Apparel, baseball cards

I have some more ideas if u would like to know them just give me a email

Autographed stuff is cool – pictures, baseballs, baseball cards, etc…

Free tickets to a game isn’t a bad idea either, especially since you can probably get better seats than most of us (without selling our cars/houses/first born).

How about a Phil Hughes CD – you can burn your favorite songs to a CD and send it to the winner?

13 02 2008
hughesforpres

HEY PHIL,
I THINK IN GOING WITH THE THEME OF YOUR NEW NUMBER AND THE NEW SEASON STARTING (now that I got ur attention I’ll take caps off) I think it is only right to go with either A. A pair of autographed jerseys your old and new numbers (THAT WOULD BE SICK!!!! Can I have them? bucsyanks@comcast.net!!??) or B. Just an autographed jersey of your new number. Maybe the Spring Training style????……..Waddya think???

13 02 2008

contest? 2 words…

GAME TICKETS!

It’s the last year of Yankee stadium…if you could leave maybe 4 tickets for someone, that would be amazing.

14 02 2008

A cool prize would be if we got to pick your entrance song to one of your starts!

14 02 2008

If can, I hope to attend a game with everyone together, so, Bill’s topic, as far as possible is concerning the game.
A card or picture, have your signature, such a prize is very worth collecting.
Or is the player’s card that is really very cool.

All of any prizes are very fine, because of being the intention of Phil to the fans.

I think nyy4life had a great idea for the contest.

Phil,

Any thoughts/feelings re: reporting for spring training this year and how it feels different from past years?

14 02 2008

I think that it would be great if you posting some of your trash for a contest. Perhaps some old credit card bills, old receipts, anything that would give someone the chance to sell your identity.

Allow fans to INTERACT with your blog. Have a contest where fans will have the opportunity to have a column on your blog during the season where they will be able to reflect on your play on the field and reflect upon your past starts. This will not only give fans the opportunity to share our emotions about our favorite Yankees pitcher, but allow us to give you feedback (as if we were pitching coaches) from the Yankees.

Also- I just wanted to know as well as one or two other people that had posted before me about your charity work. I had seen something weekend that stated that Joba was going to be working with the Police Academy in New York. Have you put any thought into what charity you are going to work with. (You can always donate your money to me).

HONESTLY, I just appreciate the fact that you are willing to interact with Yankee fans on the level that you are doing. As far as prizes go, I know that I am not helping the cause by saying “anything would be cool”, but its the truth. For specific ideas, anything game used, memorabilia, autographs are the things that I personally would cherish the most. For contests, random drawings are cool, or contests where the fans need to be creative. I like the one guy who said that a contest to come up with NASCAR photo captions. We could extend that to any pics that you take around practice, the field or the club house. Give the fans a chance to be creative with things as they relate to the other players on the team. What about a contest for the best 10 song playlist on an iPod?

Do you know if any of the other guys on the team have, or are considering a web-blog like you?

I think maybe guess something hasn’t happened yet. Which movies will rank no.1,2,3 at the box office for this coming weekend? How much they get? The outcome of first spring training game? Scoreline?

Just joined the site and I have a couple suggestions but they would be for when games start being played. They would also take a bit of time to come to an end as well, not sure how much of a commitment you want to make to it.

– First Yankee to get a hit, first with a double, triple, HR.
– First Pitcher with a W, first shutout, first complete game.

_ Hit streak contest; pick a player to get a hit in the first game, then pick a different player to get a hit in the second game and so on until you picked 4 different players, then you could use one that you have picked before. So whoever gets the most right in a row has the longest hit streak.

A prize I’d like for any contest going on in the spring would be A couple Spring Training tickets to a weekend game.

Phil, I think you should give the winner of an upcoming contest Shelley Duncan’s cell phone number. Go Yanks.

Phil,
I’m not sure if you are able to do this, but perhaps a prize could have something to do with the All-Star game/Homerun Derby at Yankee Stadium.

I don’t really have any good contest ideas it probably should be something like what is your favorite something of trivia of some sort but I have a prize idea. I have a picture of you, joba, ian , and shelley when you guys were dressed up as characters from the wizard of oz and the prize should be that picture signed by all four of you. Just throwing it out there. Or, it is a lot to ask, but tickets to a gameπŸ™‚
