Record Setting Day

26 02 2008

Tyler Kepner of The Times wrote an article today about the blog. As a result the hits for today have shot up to 23,000+ and counting. I know a lot of these people won’t be returning visitors but it’s pretty cool that the word is getting out. Just wanted to thank everyone for the continued support.

Oh and I had to mention that Joba will be on Rome is Burning in a few minutes, so check that out. Be back later.

Pretty good article. I loved how he described you as “a Californian living in Tampa,” because that’s definitely how I felt when I moved from CA to FL… and I still haven’t adjusted to life in FL because when I’m not at my university up in NC, I’m stuck in a the UF oriented Gainesville (ick).

Glad to hear you are getting all this attention. You are the most down to earth guy out their and you really treat your fans well. I will be sure to watch Joba on Rome.

Hey Phil,

I am so glad The Times wrote the article. Now I know about this awesome blog. I will be a return visitor, no doubt! I always wanted to feel more a part of the team I have been in love with since ’78 when I was only 10. It has always been a dream of mine to be down in Tampa for spring training. Now I get to feel like I’m there for at least a few minutes a day.

I’m soooo glad the Yankees decided not to trade you. You are the man!

Phil, I think what you’re doing is fantastic. Its great to see you interacting with the fans. This doesn’t happen often enough from other players. Derek Jeter has a blog, which he updates 4 times a year, and A-Rod only once, so its awesome to see someone actually interested in the fans, not that other playes don’t appreciate us (I hope they do!), but I think what you’re doing is awesome, so keep it up.

If you have time and wanna be a little sneaky, check out the Yankees fan forum @ Yankees.com (I posted the link below). Check out and see what people are saying…and DON’T pay attention to the TROLLS hating on the Yankees, they’re mostly Red Sox fans (some are nice) and Mets fans (which some are pretty cook as well). ~~~~> http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=ml-yankees

You should have seen the boards lighting up when there were talks of trading you for Johan, it was crazy. I’m happy you’re a Yankee, I was a firm believer in keeping you and anyone else going in that trade. Also, I know you already know this, but since your blog as been getting media attention, realize that you’re PROBABLY gonna get some negative responses, so please DON’T pay attention to the trolls, they’re just jealous. I look forward to seeing you and the rest of the team this year! Go YANKEES!

Phil – in your opinion, if Joba becomes a starter in 2008 will he throw 98-100mph for about 7 innings each start? Or as a starter will he most likely throw all 4 of his great pitches – but a fastball more in the 93mph range?

Aside from the fact that you got injured during the summer- when you returned to the rotaion, did you feel like the “forgotten #1 prospect” b/c all of the attention in the media was focused on Joba? Most knowledgeable Yankee fans should realize that you are more of the key to a series of W.S. Championships.

Great job setting this thing up for people to know that there are regular guys with big talent and managable egos such as yourself.

Joba was great…even if Rome isn’t! Personally I can’t stand the guy…I think his talking style is extremely annoying (worse than Joe Buck) and his beliefs on most sports couldn’t be more wrong!

But of course Joba was great, just wish he was asked some real questions!

Have you ever gotten into the batter’s box against him? I would love to see how nasty that slider really is…

hey. im a die-hard redsox fan, but i still have to admit you’re a helluva pitcher. you’ve got some really amazing stuff. and at just twenty-one, you’re gonna be a force for the next 15-20 years. i’m not a stereotypical redsox fan, because i do admit the yankees are good, and the yankees have talent. in the majority of the baseball games that i play on my Playstation 2, or Xbox 360, i usually make a trade for you and joba and get you on my Redsox, which is usually crammed with rookies (i.e. Elijah Dukes, Delmon Young, Micah Owings, Ryan Braun, ect) I usually trade Buccholtz and some minor leaguer. you usually get around 14-23 wins per season (including one 24-1 with a 1.03 ERA, rookie season no less.) continue to be amazing, and continue to improve. hopefully in the future you come the Redsox. trade your Pinstripes to the red and blue. But if not, i’d understand. You seem like a really great guy. not the fact that you (are/will be) rich. Not the fact you’re a major league pitcher in the city that scrutinizes you for missing a button on your jersey, let alone being a 21 year old who undoubtadly has to be nervous, facing players that you’ve grown up idolizing, watching play on TV, ect, ect. The fact that you actually care enough to interact with your fans makes you worth the hazing for liking the ‘hated team.’
Keep it up, and You’ll go far.

To be honest, I didn’t know about the blog until I read the NYT article this morning, but I’ve already marked the site as a Favorite. I think you’ll see the site numbers only continue to go up!! You’re a great example for other ballplayers and young kids about not forgetting what it was like to be a fan and have access to your favorite players.

This blog is fantastic – love all the photos and contests!!🙂

26 02 2008
yankeechick77

PS – I think it’s nice that “fgsfsfbbbrd” is a non-Yankee-hating BoSox fan, but Phil, please don’t EVER, EVER go to the evil Red Sox!! They have a crappy small locker room and all the players are punks! And frankly, the Boston accent is so hideous, you should want to stay as far away from anyone that says “wicked” as you can. Believe me, I know – I used to live there, and as a Yankee fan nonetheless (though it was before they won anything).

Phil, I just learned about your site on the NY Times. As a kid growing up, I would have loved it if my favorite players (Murcer, Munson, Bobby Bonds, Willie Randolph, Catfish Hunter) had a blog.

I’ll bookmark your site and check it from time to time. I look forward to another great year of Yankee baseball. The pitching staff is going to be fun to watch. Best of luck on a great season.

Hey Phil, it’s great that the word is out about your blog. What you give us here is great and we all appreciate you spending part of your baseball life with us. Just remember to stay humble and focused on baseball. When you were 4 years old, there was a “future” star who we thought was going to be something special. Brien Taylor turned into a “never-was”. We want to see you around for a LONG time.

Hey Phil,

Found your blog via Buster O. on ESPN.com. Just wanted to say that I am very excited about the season this year because Cash kept all the young talent like you and Joba. Also, I am even more excited to learn you are such an “Office” fan. Good luck on the season and I look foward to revisiting your blog. Also if you ever make it to Idaho, I just wanted to say:

“You, me, bar, beers, buzzed. Wings, shots, ddrruunnkk. Waitresses, hhoott. Football, Cornell/Hofstra, slaughter. Then quick nap at my place, and we hit the tis-own.”

Hi Phil, I am a big Yankee fan and also a big Phil Hughes fan. I am very impressed with your pitching mechanics which are very solid. I was really bummed when you blew out your hamstring while going for the no hitter last season. I truely think that you will have many more chances for one. I read an article about you in the NJ Star Ledger and that is how I found this blog. I will definitely be back. I am also very happy that you were not traded like promising young pitchers who have pitched for the Yankees years passed. Good luck this season. Rick

So happy to see all the work you guys put in prior to catchers and pitchers, Phil. Glad to see you’ve got that pop back on the fastball, I knew it was a matter of just getting back your arm and leg strength, even being young and with great PT and trainers, it still takes time. Just want you to know this fan consistently defended you as you tried to come back from that awful injury. I had a feeling that the extra 4 mph was missing because you
weren’t quite there yet. Really looking forward to this season. I know you’ve put the work in, so please just keep doing those stretches and stay loose. I consistently told all the hot stove/fantasy friends that we didn’t need Santana at that salary and I’m glad some home grown talent is finally going to show what they can do. People forget that the farm system developed some of the core players on those WS teams, especially Andy and Mo on the pitching side, not to mention Jorge and DJ. Right there that’s a pretty good All Star team and some serious Hall of Fame contenders. Thanks for being cool about this, try to keep a lid on it so Cashman and the execs don’t get their panties all in a twist. God forbid any of their highly marketable heroes could appear human. I mean we ALL loved Billy, flaws and all, that guy just wanted to WIN! And all the controversy that Wells started with his book a few years ago in regards to ‘roids, go back and reread it now–it’s all TRUE!
I know, I know to quote Jack Nicholson, “You can’t handle the truth.” Well, I know you can, but the brass want you to be pc. So try and walk that fine line and keep them off your back because this is how it should be. Plus the blog should help you kill some time during all the boring traveling too. I’ll be hurling down the compliments and encouragement from Loge MVP Sec 468 Row E from right behind A Rod Phil!

Tell Shelley he should consider launching a blog, just because I bet he’d have some real goofy stuff to add to the blogosphere about your work-a-day lives. A ton of folks I know are huge Shelley fans.

I’m sure you’re getting this sense, but let me add another voice to it, especially in case folks in the Front Office are reading your blog, too: So many of my Yanks’ fan friends are really fired up about the team this year because of the energy and approach you, Ian, Joba, Shelley, Wang, Melky, Robby, and others bring to ballfield every night. I am one of those season ticket-holders considering not renewing in 2009 because I don’t want to support the new Stadium for a variety of baseball-nerd and political reasons. You guys make me re-consider that decision. Thanks for playing the game the right way and letting us feel like we’re a tiny part of it through this blog.

Great article on you Phil, thanks for caring about the fans, and being so fan friendly! Sad to say I am 30yrs old and the 1st Yankees game I ever went to was your debut, so it wasn’t sad! I still have ticket and hope to get it signed by you one day! Can’t wait for the season to begin and I want to wish you the best and also the NY Yankees.

Lucky you. I have comment on boing boing about a bomb that costs a toilet – I mean, a toilet that costs a bomb – “a serious loadda crapper” and suddenly my hits went from under 100 to 400 in 12 hours. Of course this is microscopic compared to yours, but I know how you feel. Today my visitors numbered 200+.😦
not that bad for a 4-mnt old blog, methinks. but well done to you!

I think it’s great how you are connecting with the fans in this blog, shows that you actually “get it”. I’m also glad u weren’t traded and will be a yankee for many years, also very happy you changed your number to 34, which is my favorite number. I recently started a website, <a href = http://www.latinosinmlb.com although the main focus is on latin ball players, ialso have news on all basbeall players, if it’s ok with you i would like to add a link on my site todirect my visitors to your blog.
