2 Yankee Greats

6 03 2008

I don’t like asking guys for autographs. But today I sucked it up and asked Goose Gossage and Reggie Jackson if they would personalize a ball for me. It’s pretty cool to have so many great players just wandering around the clubhouse. Makes you feel so fortunate to have the ability you’ve been given.

Thanks for sharing, that’s awesome! Good luck this season, I am counting on you for 10-15 wins on my fantasy team, no pressure. Lol

I’ll you this – That’s pretty sweet they personalized them for you. I have often wondered how pros go about asking other pros for autographs. I have heard that at the NFL Pro Bowl its customary for players to bring memorabilia for other guys to autograph… I guess its really no different in baseball either. Put those balls (lol) in a nice case and a safe place!!

What did the top of Reggie’s message say – Its not in the pic.

Good luck!

It must be great and beneficial for you to be around these Yankee greats all the time in the clubhouse, especially Goose. I’ve met him twice at the HOF weekend in Cooperstown and he was probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. He sits there and talks with anyone who wants to talk. It’s great to see he’s finally being honored with an induction into the HOF this summer.

6 03 2008
littlekittynyc

that is sweet, Phil! I have David Cone’s rookie year auto., Ozzie Smith, Vince Coleman, and Strawberry’s auto. as well. I am jealous of your collection, though!! I agree with Alex4Yanks…I always wanted Yogi’s……

Hey Phil, you should defintely get the autos of those players NOW. You might feel bad about it but someday you will be happy you did. I certainly would want to get Yogi and Whitey while you can.

That said, how about getting a team signed baseball and having a contest for it?? lol

6 03 2008
larrydavid1

wow so awesome! no other club can boast having yogi berra, reggie jackson, goose, nettles, tino, and guidry helping out and lending out advice. so valuable and only with the yankees!

Yeah, those are pretty nice Poohs. That’s my new nickname for you. P+Hughes=Poohs. Like Pooh Richardson, only you’re really good. I miss those old time nicknames for baseball players, so we’re bringing it back, starting with you, Poohs. When should we expect you to give away those baseballs in a contest?

Very cool Phil. Anyone you haven’t had the guts to ask yet or haven’t had the chance to ask.

Thos are wonderful, Phil – I love Goose’s message. I went down to ST a few years ago and got a bunch of Yankee autographs. However, what I really treasure is the opportunity I had to chat a bit with some guys like Lee Mazilli and Mel Stottlemeyer. My father got me an autographed baseball with the 1977-78 Yankees’ autographs on it and I have it floating around, but I’m not a huge autograph person. I’d rather have fond memories of chatting with a favorite Yankee – it’s much more personal and it’s a memory I’d always have. I don’t trust myself to not lose autographs, lol

Phil
Don’t feel funny about that…..They were in your shoes years ago, you are at ah to be near them…but now they are looking up to you & wishing they were in your shoe’s…..Because if you weren’t Very good you wouldn’t be a YANKEE
I know how you feel…..been there done that….But your a YANKEE now
you must be special……………………………………..

even the biggest kids get to be fans still.
that’s awesome that you got them to do that, and I wouldn’t be shocked if they are going to be asking for your autograph before long. keep up the good work and get those pitchers straightened out, tough performances today.

Man to be part of the Yankees would be a dream come true. To see a Yankee game live would be even better, preferably in New York haha. Out here in Alberta, Canada we don’t make it to a lot of em. That is awesome you got both Goose and Reggie to sign. I wouldn’t pass that up either haha. I met a guy named Jarome Iginla (Captain for the Calgary Flames in the NHL) back when he got traded to Calgary in his rookie year. He gave me his autograph and had lunch with me and my family. Pretty much the coolest thing ever. Though I’d have to say having lunch with the Yankees would top it…

6 03 2008
djjunks

Absolutely amazing balls! Don’t be surprised when the young guns start coming to you for autographs in a few years.

6 03 2008

Congrats Phil. I can’t make out the second part of Goose’s sig. Is he saying “Play Hard and Have Feed.”? It’s gotta be something else. Anyone?

6 03 2008
briancromer

Hey Phil…here’s a question for you: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF MEMORABILIA/AUTOGRAPH THAT YOU HAVE COLLECTED?

6 03 2008
Canada Day

Have you ever get a ball signed by Joe Carter, a true Canadian hero? Brought the World Series to CANADA, where it belongs!!! Oh dear, this is really bringing me back, reminiscing about the glory days of the early ’90s. Canada Day back in ’92 and ’93 were out of control, so much hype around the ballclub, the day was just as much about celebrating our contry’s all-star ball club as it was about celebrating the country itself! Then you know the rest Phil: “A swing, and a belt! Left field! Way back! Blue Jays win it! The Blue Jays are World Series champions as Joe Carter hits a three-run home run in the ninth inning and the Blue Jays have repeated as World Series Champions! Touch ’em all, Joe, you’ll never hit a bigger home run in your life!” – Tom Cheeks

6 03 2008
bart3215

Man, I wish I could get autographs as easily as you. Maybe one day I’ll be able to get autographs from people like you easily. At least your thankful for it. Maybe you’ll get another one signed and have another contest? ^^

7 03 2008
arigold13

What’s it like when a guy like Reggie Jackson or Goose walks into the clubhouse Hughes?

7 03 2008
ld1173

wow Phil, very cool! I feel the same way, I think i’d almost prefer not to ask for autographs.. to me it would be awesome just to get to meet the person and interact with a conversation, but having a collectable here and there is pretty cool. the only big name in baseball i have is a signed bat and picture of joe torre that my dad was able to get for me. he works as a vet in northeast NJ and one of his clients was a friend of joe torres and brought those for me as a surprise.. my dad is very thoughtful and caring like that.. he’s the best =)
btw, when are you pitching again? i make a request that it be on the other date that the game is on ESPN so i can see you pitch..๐Ÿ˜‰ lol

7 03 2008
usako34

How nice!!!

Someday you will become as great as they are!

7 03 2008
pinstripedgirl

hey phil,

great autographs, last year i had seats on the field in oakland and reggie signed a ball for me, to date that was the best autograph i’ve collected myself. My dad passed down to me a mickey mantle rookie card signed, he used to be a security guard at yankee stadium when he was in college. I am a teacher now and i have one of Joe Morgan’s kids as well as one of Joe Montana’s kids in my class, but i am too chicken to ask for his autograph. Maybe i’ll suck it up and ask one day.

good luck tomorrow

Phil that is so awesome , very jealous! How cool is it to have tons of people around to get things signed at your convience. I’m sure they don’t mind signing for another great player.

2 Yankee greats that you just can’t pass up! I’m sure there will be plenty more you’ll receive Phil, because when you’re around the Yankees clubhouse there are legends everywhere. That’s great and I’m envious. My Dad has a great collection, but you are really going to have opportunities! To know them and be right there making your own name is something special. And it’s great you share those experiences with us. I haven’t heard Whitey’s name mentioned being at spring training this year, but is he?

Great stuff Phil. Those will definately be a nice addition to your collection. Looking foward to see what else youget throughout the season. Looks like your progressing nicely so far this spring..althought your first outing was only one inning..you pitched well. Keep it up.

hey phil,
its really nice to see a young up and coming player appriciate the great past of not only the yankees but baseball itself. And also to recognize how lucky you are to be give such a talent that lends itself to meeting such superstars, i get the feeling that you are in the minority when it comes to that. Seems there are just too many young superstars who take things for granted.
Good Luck in 2008!
bring the championship trophy back to NY it looks out of place up there in that other town!

Very nice, I like Goose’s autograph.

As an autograph collector I can certainly appreciate those 2 autographs, well done.
Someone mentioned earlier that they were counting on you for their fantasy team….I have been trying to trade for you all off-season but the guy that has you wont budge….i offered him so ridiculously good offers but he loves you too much and it aint hard to see why….

good luck this year man!!!!

that’s some really awesome memorabilia to have phil…..i’m sure it must be an unbelievable feeling to grow up a yankee fan, then finally get drafted by your favorite team and now be in the position you are, getting to hang out with some of the greats of yankees lore…you’re really living the dream man, and i love that you want to share it with all of us. I’ve been rooting for you from the very beginning – you’ve really become my favorite player, especially since you try to stay close to your roots and include the fans in your life. Keep up the good work, looking forward to watching you succeed this year.

Nice! It must be weird to ask the people who are basically your coworkers – but who also are living legends – for their autographs, but it has to be done!

Wow Phil, I envy you. I grew up watching Goose and Reggie play as a kid growing up in Northern Jersey. Two of my favorite all-time players.

Congrats on scoring the autographs. Like others have said, you’re never too old to appreciate a memento from players that you admire. Some day the tables will be turned and you’ll have the chance to do the same for young players that look up to you as well.

BTW, I emailed you a picture that I did of you, Ian, and Joba that folks over at Pete Abe’s blog thought was great. Knowing that you probably have a million emails to wade through, I thought I’d post a link to it here as well for you and other posters on this blog to enjoy. Here it is: http://www.clubbronx.com/weblog.php?w=1

I know what you mean. Last year Joba and Ian were down here (Hawaii) for the Winter League and I had to get their autographs! So I did, they each signed the sweet spot side by side. And now some of the guys that know I got it are asking me to sell it to them. I’m like NO WAY! All that is missing on that ball is your autograph =) I wish I could go to more MLB games but for now I’m happy with Winter League, just not satisfied! Aloha!

That you be you one day Phil. HOF! Haha maybe its a little early to say that but whatever happens just know that we support you. I’m not one of those Yankees fans that BOOO players on their own team! I love all the Yankees through the great times and the rough times. GO YANKEES!

You lucky dog, I was down for a couple of days to spring training and came away with Frank Howard, Alan Horne and Jeff Marquez autographs, and I got a ball that you were warming up with in the bullpen in the South Florida game from Mike Harkey (very cool)! If you could thank those guys all seemed real cool. I missed getting Gooses thanks to a couple of punk autograph seekers ( red sox fan’s) that sell them, they got away with around 10 auto’s. Those guys make us real fans look bad.

8 03 2008
jmac2336

WOW! From one fellow baseball collector to another those are pretty cool! Phil you should get a ball signed against every starter you face in your career in the MLB.

I have a ball signed from Big Papi personalized that says Yankee killer on it. Since he has signed it he really hasn’t done too much against the Yanks. Hopefully it jinxed him…

8 03 2008
drewnasty98

thats really sick! It must be awsome to have all of these Hall Of Famers just walking around the clubhouse on any given day…did you ever get a ball signed by Mattingly or anybody else?
