I didn’t expect Joba, Ian and I to get so many questions about the three of us this spring. We’ve done two tri-interviews the last couple days. The most recent being this afternoon with the YES network. We’ve been asked everything from Joba’s role this season to which nickname we like for the three of us (I think we decided on the three amigos). Check it out if you get a chance. I think it was pretty funny.
What else would you guys like to see out of the blog as the season approaches? I’ll continue with the contests and everything else but if there is something specific let me know. I’ve heard a couple people mention post-game write ups but I think our beat writers do a fantastic job with that. Take care.

People who read baseball players’ blogs are looking for something that you can’t get from the beat writers, who (as you say) do a great job of covering the game itself and that is an insider’s perspective. We’ve all read about event XYZ in the papers, but how do you as a player feel about it? Something like that.

Anything you can tell us from off the field that we’d never know otherwise. What you do between starts. Who you ate dinner with and where after a day game. Who fears Shelley Duncan’s forearm the most. That kind of stuff. Keep it up Phil.

I can’t wait until you guys just go out there and show them how great you are and shut them up for once. I really think the blog is great! Maybe you could write about some of the things that happen behind the scenes in MLB that us typical fans would never even think about. Or you could get into what your favorite things are to do when you go on road trips in each particular city. Let us know what you’re up to when there’s an off day on the schedule. How about what you’re thinking before and after a game. Maybe let us know of any practical jokes that are played in the clubhouse? Who are they against, and what was it, and how did they take it? Just some ideas to help get you thinking. Thank you so much for doing this, though. You’re awesome, Phil! Go Yanks!!!!

Hey phil….. fans definetly like to hear about what goes on off the field. We like to know how the clubhouse atmosphere is. We like to know what you guys do on off days. Stuff like that, that the everyday fans don’t usually have access too.

don’t think write ups are a great idea, i mean there is plenty of other outlets to get that sort of info on your games, but just in general, whats the life of a major leaguer like during the season, what a major leaguer gets upto in a strange city when he’s got nothing to do, stuff like that

Perhaps you could have people submit questions for specific teammates of yours, then hold little interviews with them. Sure it’s a little more work for you, but hey! When you work once every fifth day, what else have you got to do. Just joking. I’m gonna be in KC on April 9th. I hope you’re throwing that day.
I agree that the beat writers doa great job with the post game write-ups. I think it’d be nice to hear how you felt before and after each start. And maybe share any interesting stories that come up throughout the season. And by all means I think what happens in the clubhouse should stay in the clubhouse, unless those involved are cool with you telling us. The Yanks don’t need another David Wells spilling all the secrets.
As for the Three Amigos? Not really a fan of that. I personally like “The Triumvirate.” The definition being “any association of three in office or authority.” Came up with that myself but I’m sure it’s been used. If you guys are as good as we all know you are, it’s pretty fitting. If you stick with the Three Amigos, which one of you is “Dusty Bottoms?”

Big fan of the blog! It’s very cool of you to do this…I think I speak for a lot of us here that we’ve been following your career and this just makes it that much sweeter.
That said, I think it would be incredible to hear about stuff that happens around the clubhouse that we can’t get from the beat guys. Fans love that stuff. And I’m a big fan of the pics posted from your travels.

Phil honestly, I think you should hire a top website designer that can do flash extremely well and have a domain name or philhughes.com or something. It will get even more attention than this and you can write your blog on your on website with more features and easier ways to enter a blog post.
I live in Rhode Island, so I’m always surrounded by huge Sox fans. When you go to Boston, What is it like for you guys, as players? And, what is your favorite city to be in, New York, or somewhere else?

I’d love to see you you do series like “10 Questions With XX” where you interview your teammates and give us fans additional insight into you and your teammates beyond what we might read in the traditional press. Questions could be about game preparation, pre game rituals/superstitions, favorite movies, favorite food to order from room service , post – game routine, best restaurants from the road, best prank you’ve played on a rookie, what kind of car do you drive, best gift you’ve every gotten/given, etc etc.
I think we all appreciate the insights you’ve provided into your life and would love to continue to learn more about you, your teammates and your relationship as a team.

I am interested in what goes on in the clubhouse before and after the games. Do people play music? Is there like an Xbox or something set up that people like to play against each other? What do you guys eat? Fried crap or “healthy” food? do you whip each other with wet towels like in high school? Is there a lot of hanging out and shooting the sh*t? Are there delineations between the older guys and the younger guys? Do the old guys talk about investments and such while the young guys talk about girls and beer?
I hear all of these retired guys talking about the thing that they really miss is the hanging out in the clubhouse and the camraderie and all that. I wouldn’t mind hearing what that entails. It seems pretty cool.

I think a lot of the stuff surrounding stories in the clubhouse, and your thoughts on how you performed are going to remain private, which is probably how it should be. If I were in your shoes, this blog would be used exactly how you’re using it – a way to connect to your fans without mimicking our good buddy Curt Schilling over there with that gay blog he has created where he discusses game situations and so forth (so I’ve heard).
Anyways, I think “A Day in the Life of The Philster” would be cool, where you give a timeline of the types of activities and things you did in a given day on an hour-by-hour basis. Let us be a little more jealous while we sit at work from 10 AM to 11 AM while we read your blog posting that said this was when you were stretching and jogging (and getting paid for it).
I like when you just write about what is on your mind for that particular day….being spontaneous and fun is what you seem to be about…and I like learning more about you. ……(But, the baseball talk is ALWAYS good, too!!) I liked reading the last entries about the lineups…predictions..etc. BASEBALL, YANKEES>>>>>ALL # 1 !!!

I think a great feature would be some kind of meet and greet/10 questions with various players on the team. Things that are not normally asked of them.
What’s shakin’ poohs? Has that nickname caught on yet? If not, just give it time. The three of you could be generation K. Or how bout the baddest mofo’s under 25 in the mlb? Or Strike 3? The possibilities are endless.
On a personal note, my wife and I are training for American Gladiators. No Joke. I was wondering if i could get my hands on a copy of the world famous Andy Pettitte/Roger Clemens workout plan. Does anyone know where the YES interview with the 3 amigos can be watched?
I’m interested in what it’s like for you. I’m only a year or two younger than you, and the thought of playing for the Yankees absolutely baffles me. I’m wondering how you deal with the media, if you ever get frustrated by it, or if it’s something that you’re able to deal with naturally and you enjoy it. What’s it like having so many people suddenly know you?
Or since the hitters are the Bronx Bombers, how about the Bronx Bomb Squad. Yeah, i know, these are probably no good but i couldn’t help myself.
I’d like to hear about your experiences traveling and in other cities during away games. I can only imagine your “free time” is limited but it would be cool to hear about what you during that time. Pictures are always cool too!!!

Nice going by Wanger today ….looking good with all those ground balls. The starting staff is looking pretty impressive as well as the relievers. I know it’s only ST but it’s still terrific seeing everyone doing well and psyched for the season. Can’t wait for Opening Day (I’ll be there !!!!)

I think a lot of us would like to hear more about what it’s like to be a big league ball player. We know what you guys do on the field (some probably follow you more than you do) but I’d love to know what goes on off the field too. I’m the same age as you and I love to hear that I’m just like you except you throw 95 with a sick hook.
Like you said, the beat writers pretty much have the post game stuff covered. I always like funny stories or quotes, something that isn’t going to make it into the Post but still interesting.
You mentioned a few blogs ago you bought a new digital SLR. How about some photos? Some documentary style photos would be cool.. Day in the Life kinda stuff.
Just don’t go with the Curt Schilling blog style and I’m sure it’ll be cool.
I want to know what players talk about in the dugout, bullpen and especially at first base. Giambi always chats up a storm with people on first… What do they talk about? How he hit the ball? How he saw one of the outfielders picking his nose? How the guy selling beer behind home plate wouldn’t shut up?
Yeah, that was me that did the Three Amigos graphic – I actually posted a link to it here in the comments a few days ago and emailed it to Phil (probably in the middle of a gazillion emails in his inbox … LOL ) We were discussing the silly “Generation Trey” thing at Pete Abe’s during a game the other day and I suggested the Three Amigos and did the graphic. Much like Stever Serby does in the Sunday Post, what if you interviewed a random member of the Yankee family each week (until you run out of people!)and asked them random questions. Everyone from Jeter to Gene Monohan. This time you get to play interviewer for a change and ask the questions of your teammates! You can mix the standard serious questions (3 dinner guests) with some funny ones (if you were out at a bar trying to meet chicks, which teammate would make the best wing man)

I think what would be really cool is if you talked about stuff that goes on in the clubhouse and around the other guys so we could feel like we’re a part of it somehow, and we can get a sense of how cool you guys are around the clubhouse. Like, for instance, quote of the day from someone on the team. Also, I was thinking that once in a while you could have like a guest star on the blog or something of that sort. Basically, it doesn’t really matter what you do and anything would be awesome because this is the coolest blog ever and you’re the coolest person ever.

I also like the idea of fun contests about your starts, like guessing your pitching line, etc. Basically, like most people have been saying, it would be cool for you to talk about off the field stuff including pics, clubhouse banter, and other fun stuff. argh, I wish I got YES network! college in NC and the rest of the time in FL don’t really give me much to work with, baseball wise. I love the nickname ‘the three amigos.’ That seems to work really well for you three.
And as for what I’d like to see on the blog – probably a lot of the same. Once the season gets going you probably won’t have as much time, but just little tid bits about your life. Things that you’re interested in at the time. Maybe a good movie you saw (if you’re into movies), or a really good restaurant you went to, so people who live nearby (which would not be me) could check it out. I just think that it’s great that you want to give back to the fans by blogging. We love hearing from you (at least I know I do, and I’m assuming that everyone else who keeps posting does too), and it’s great to know that you like hearing from us.

I recommend that you have a contest where a fan can possibly meet you in person prior to a game or on an off day you may have. I would suspect that fans would love this idea. On your end you can make it a one time deal so it would draw lots of interest from anyone who would like to meet with you and have a chat.
i agree that more random pictures are a good idea (just no naked pull-up shots).
maybe a poll from time to time.

well with the post game stuff maybe not too much but just an quick opinion maybe just even like a sentence cause your opinion is different from the beat writer’s. more pictures would be cool too.
Oh, there’s one little suggestion that I just remembered. I don’t know how the site works, but if there’s a way to show the time that your posts are put up, that’d be cool. I usually look at when the first comment was posted to see the approximate time your post went up. It’s just something I’m used to seeing over of Peter Abraham’s blog that I like.
I think it would be cool if you told stories about some of your teammates and funny things that go on in the clubhouse. I obviously understand that you can’t tell too much, because you have to respect the privacy of your teammates. But if there are any cool stories about your teammates that are not too personal and are appropriate to repeat in your blog, I would definitely like to hear them.
The interview with Ian Kennedy a few weeks back was great too, it gave us a good look at how you guys are as actual people, not just ballplayers. Keep up the good work with the blog, and good luck this season. (Not like you’ll need it, I predict 16 wins)

Since you love the Food Network, I presume you love to eat……..if not cook. What are your favorite foods? Least favorite? That kind of thing….What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever done? Phil – You should tell us stuff that beat writers dont cover or mention. The little quirky things that go on behind the scenes would be awesome to hear about. Game recaps and pitching stats can all be retrieved by 50 different sites, but you have the ability to give the fans an inside scoop on day to day events in the clubhouse. Not asking for crazy details, but moreso something funny that happened such as a prank from bruney/hawkins, etc.
you know what would be cool … there is this mini-camcorder called “Flip Ultra” – its about a buck fifty … really simple to use, no-brainer type stuff … uploads directly into You Tube … anyways, figure it would be fairly straight forward to post video clips on your blog … which would be way cool … dugout stuff, maybe clubhouse shots, road trips, whatever … just a thought. Keep up the great work Phil!

I think the fact that you blog for your fans in general is fantastic. I’m a fan from Indiana, and just last summer was able to get to my first game in Yankee Stadium, and you pitched. I’ve been following you and your pitching ever since.
The coolest part about following along on what you are doing is there are finally professional athletes are are in my age range, and I’m not just watching a bunch of way older people play. I’m a senior at an all girl’s college, so it’s really fun to watch what other people outside of my world, especially famous ones, are doing.
So as for what kind of posts for the future, just knowing about what life as a Yankee and in the big leagues is like is great. Giving those of us who dream of baseball and knowing you guys a glimpse into your life is pretty awesome.

Give the readers off the playing field type information and the bloggers will have to guess who the person is through a poll survey.
i.e. weird quirks, superstitions, favorite restaurant while on the road. stuff like that.

Phil, I love that you have this blog. I know what a pain in the ass they can be to keep up. However, if you do keep it going, I’m sure we’d all love to read things about what you think about the games, before and after. An idea about how you prepare to face certain hitters. What it’s like going into a start in Fenway or at Shea. I know there’s clubhouse stuff we’d love to know, but some things need to be kept there, like how much abuse A-Rod takes for all the women he stupidly gets caught with :), or how you can’t drive anywhere in New York without seeing Jeter’s face 20 feet high selling something.
I don’t think the Yankees managmement would appreciate a game analysis when you take the mound every fifth day. You might give away some of your secrets to..lets say the Red Sox! I am sure Cashman must have touched upon the subject at some point this spring training. Keep on doing what you are doing.
I’ve always liked the Trinity but I think it may have too many religious connotations for some people.
it’d be cool to hear some stories on road trips, or how (if) people in the clubhouse react to whatever stories the media will exaggerate

Dude. I know you have to be the busiest guy in the world during the season. Here’s the deal: You don’t have to give us much to keep us reading. It’s freaking awesome that the No. 3 pitcher, a 21-year-old, right-handed stud, is taking time to communicate with Yanks fans.
You need to think of stuff to post? Write about the last year of Yankee Stadium. Write about the people you meet all year. Write about what you do on planes. Tell us the craziest story you hear about yesteryear (leave names out if it’s too juicy). Write about midtown Manhattan. Write about your goals after baseball. Upload music people give you. Upload photos of your travels, your teammates, your life.
I don’t want to be a voyeur, but damn, dude, you are giving a sports insider the kind of stuff that nobody — beat writers, friends/family, etc. — can get anywhere else. And that’s actual access to a Yankee.
While I’m ranting, pay no attention to anybody who tells you what NOT to do. My Lord, that drives me nuts. This is your blog. You could walk away today. Some people don’t seem to get that.
Bottom line, I appreciate the contact. I appreciate the little things. You post it, I’ll read it. Pretty simple.
BTW, one more thing. I’m going to some Triple-A games in Durham when Scranton plays there. Please e-mail me something that friends and I can post on a sign that will stir up trouble. We’re sitting near CF. I figure Gardner will be there.

I’d like to hear what you and other players talk about during the game. I’d also like to know how you feel about some of the players you face like toughest hitter, person that drives you crazy on the base paths and tell us about the hot women you meet like reporters Michelle Beadle from the Yesnetwork. My favorite stuff thus far has been the Q&A you’ve done from time to time. I’d love for you to do a weekly/bi-weekly mailbag, maybe with guests to give you a break sometimes. Or, if fans are emailing you questions all the time and you’re answering them, bundle up a bunch of good/funny/insightful/whatever ones and make a post out of it.

First and foremost I would like to thank you for taking time out of your day to give a little insight into your life. As for ideas to write about when the season is going on treat this like your diary to the world. So far you have been great by letting your personality come through and not being so “cookie cutter”. This blog should go beyond baseball, I am sure when the season is going on baseball is going to be the last thing you want to talk about sometimes. Just comment on regular day to day things ie. movies you’ve seen recently and what you think, the first big purchase you want when you get that FAT contract in a few years etc etc. Just keep it simple and always be yourself you’ll be fine. All the luck to you (not that you need it, you’ve been lights out this spring)

I always like a mix of info…personal and sports related.
However, that doesn’t mean I want to know about girlfriends, etc. Nor do I expect you to go all Curtis Montague Schilling and complain about contract issues or announce injuries on your blog.
Keep it simple and fun—
Would like your take on, for example, what video games you play (and why), music (already do that), favorite movies, favorite places to eat (not the address, of course, but like “the Tour of Italy at the OG”!), fun stuff.
Re: sports topics, who you like to listen to on radio, read in newspaper and watch on TV (ie, Mike and Mike, Jim Rome, P-Abe, Lupica (please no!!!), and PTI, etc.??) what batters you don’t like to face and why…(if you’d want to release that info) what sports you play (or used to) other than baseball.
A little inside the locker room action would be cool… Does Damon still walk around naked and do crossword puzzles in the nude an hour before every game? Did Shelley and Giambi break a table wrestling, and who won? Who took a dump in Pavano;s locker, etc?
Its the tidbits that one can’t get anywhere else that will keep ’em coming back in droves. You have even better access to the info than ANY beat writer.

The blog is really just a reflection of your experiences and I think you’re doing a great service to us fans. We’re not expecting 162 post game reports or even an analysis on all your starts this season. But maybe stuff like how you felt for example when A-Rod made that diving stop to prevent further runs from scoring or something that may have happened in game that really set the tone for you, good or bad.
One thing i’d really like to know is what exactly the convo is during a meeting on the mound or when Jeter comes over and gives his $.02.
Let us know what bars we can meet up with you guys at after games at the stadium!
I thought the “questions for Ian” was really cool. Anybody you can get to do that for us would be great.
How about life off the baseball field during the season? What you do on your days off, what the travel days are like, nightlife when you’re not pitching, etc.
Hey Phil, big fan of the off the field stuff – I’d like to know what life is like on the road for you in your first big league season. Like, which cities you like, which ones have the best fans, the best food, which cities you wouldn’t visit if you weren’t getting paid to pitch there, etc. Also, any clubhouse tidbits would be cool, like if you’re planning something for a guy’s birthday or pranks that get played (like the whole LaTroy Hawkins/Brian Brueny/Andrew Brackman battles).

Wow, 150 comments on this so far. I got bored after reading about 50 so I’ll chime in with my thoughts. I agree with most people in that the actual baseball portion is covered by the beat writers. I am not going to lump effusive praise on them because I think some of them are very good and some of them are…NOT!!
But I do agree that we get plenty of game info from the papers/tv/internet etc.
I would definitely like the “insiders” view to the team. What happens that we don’t see. What happens after a win/loss would be interesting. If there is a baseball related tidbit that wouldn’t be picked up by the beat writers then that might be interesting but not x’s and o’s of baseball. More of the personal day to day stuff would be more appropriate I think.
I think what is evident, is that since your blog got so much publicity in recent newspapers, a question like the one you posed is likely to evoke a lot of different answers that you can’t possibly respond to. So keep doing what your doing.
It’s your blog and you can put up anything you want.
BTW, the person who requested a mix of politics and baseball should not be allowed back!! I think we’ve all had enough congressional hearings for a season and dno’t need to spawn political debate on what is supposed to be a happy blog!!

As a few people have noted, “Generation Trey” is really dumb. I understand its supposed to be a witty pun on the Mets’ Generation K from like 14 years ago, but Generation Trey just sounds so lame. It seems like George King is doing everything he can to coin the term by including it in every single story he writes, and it doesn’t help with Michael Kay using it on-air. I’d like to avoid a nickname for the three of you…history shows nicknames with Groups of 3 pitchers don’t do well…Izzy, Pulsipher, and Wilson stunk for the Mets. The A’s had the Big Three, who had a nice run for a few years but were broken up and now are pretty huge non-factors in baseball. Good luck to the three of you, and I’m sorry that you have to constantly hear all these dorky nicknames.

I think the coolest part of your blog is that you show us that guys like you, Ian, Joba and Shelley are regular guys. I like seeing pictures of you hanging out, on the road, visiting different places, doing normal stuff. When you had the pictures of you with Breaking Ben or at the Bud Shootout, that was cool. It shows us that you do the same things that regular people do and you are fans of other celebrities the way we are fans of yours.
You’re right that we don’t need your commentary on games, unless there’s something funny or interesting that we would never get to hear about anywhere else.

I agree with a few others on here that you should keep this blog dedicated to more of the personal side of things. How about summaries of clubhouse shenanigans?
Phil…how about a big blog of all your favorites? It could be as random as favorite fast food restaurant, favorite movie, favorite pitch to throw with 2 strikes, favorite Gatorade flavor, favorite autograph you’ve collected, etc. You can even open up suggestions for what the fans what to know about your favorites. Stuff like that is what I am looking for because like you said, I can get pitching breakdowns from the Post or ESPN.com. Have a great day.
I got one more idea…how about a list of all your guilty pleasures songs that are on your iPOD? You know, the songs that you like but would be a little embarrassed if people knew what was on there. These are the songs you don’t brag about or ask Yankee Stadium to play while you are walking to the mound. That would be hilarious.

I think I agree with the majority here. I like hearing about the off field shenanigans (I swear to God I’m going to pistol whip the next guy who says, ” Shenanigans.” ) and the type of music you’re currently listening to. I just bought a new disc by the band Saving Abel. You can see there video for Addicted on You Tube, the chick in the video is pretty hot. The song rocks too.

I think you should make a list of words that begin with the letter Q, and that could be all you ever blog about. Like “hey guys, I thought of some more words…. “
I think it would be great to hear about your preparation for your next start. For example what your pre game routine is, your routine during the week (throw days, etc). An “insider’s” view into the goings on in the clubhouse would be cool too, although I understand there are things that shoudl be kept private.
I think the beat writers do a great job, but their editors want “stories” to sell newspapers. I personally like to hear the true goings on, boring or not, as it is something that many of us will never have access to.

As far as what to post I love club house stories and my brother and some of his friends, who read this, are in little league so some pointers for them would be great.

How about a season long series of day-in-the-life postings over the course of the season. You could do a ‘workout’ day, a ‘travel’ day, and a ‘home game’ day during the rest of spring training. Then you could do ‘off day on the road’, ‘off day at home’, ‘game day on the road’, ‘game day at home’, ‘get-away day’, etc…during the season. Post-season postings & rivalry games (Sox, Mets, etc…) could also allow you to expose differences (if any) that exist and explore some of the mystique (or debunk it) of playing a rivalry or post season game.
I think lots of folks would be interesting in how the three amigos prepare for games, and how this prep is similar/different to how other pitchers prepare. You could describe you/IPK/Jaba/Andy/etc…game-day prep. This would be great reading for the casual fan, and might teach a few younger players a few new tricks.
Whatever you do, I’ll be reading it! Keep up the good blogging.
I’d be willing to read just about anything you blog about. I only hope you’re willing to continue to update during the season. Derek and Alex have ‘journals’ but they only update once or twice a year and it’s never really much of an update. I feel like I’m reading a press release or something whenever they update.
I like that I know this is your personal blog, it’s real and it’s candid and it’s just all you. For that reason I think you should just update with whatever you’d like. Whatever is on your mind, a great restaurant you found in Toronto… Heck, you could even go the Kanye West road and just post random stuff you think is cool, lol.

I think after the games that you start I think you should tell us the things that you thing you did well and some of things you think you need to improve you and like your thoughts on the game and/or your outing
besides that I think you should tell us what goes on in the clubhouse maybe some of the funny things or the practical jokes you guys play on each other
As for the nickname, 3 Amigos is good…but what about ‘The Triplets’…as given to the Dallas Cowboy players at the top of their game in the 90s: Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith?
Forget the game stuff, I think all of us true Yankee fans know enough about how the game went. How about letting us know of stupid bullpen conversations, competitions, pranks, ect…. . We all know its not strictly baseball talk going on out there. Just an Idea……Later Phil!

I would enjoy hearing about anything that is going on with your day, whether it is game-related or not.
personally, the part of baseball i miss the most is the clubhouse chatter, and getting to know the personalities of the players on the team. Since the Yankees pride themselves on professionalism it’s sometimes hard to get an idea of what they’re like. I think it would be fun to hear about some tidbits of the converstaions you guys have (baseball related or not) to shed the corporate image many people attribute to the Yanks.

What you do when you travel how life is in other clubhouses compared to being in Yankee Stadium. These are the things no reporter can tell us because they are not you. Kind of a Behind the Music of sorts.

We submit questions that you could ask your teammates (non-Baseball of course) and you pick some out and report some of the answers to us. Since no one else is blogging it would be interesting to me at least to see what other Yankees are doing outside the game. I know this puts you to work a bit so it might be an awful idea but it was just a thought.

I just heard a report on the radio about the brawl with the Rays!
I think I just found a topic I’d love to know more about! Like what do you do when you see the entire team charging out to second base? What role do you take as a pitcher? What’s the feeling going through you as the benches empty?
I haven’t seen the slide on TV yet but just to throw my immediate thoughts in:
1. I don’t mind the “pluck” of Shelley Duncan in going in hard into second base (I heard it was spikes up but haven’t seen it)
2. I think for a long time other teams took advantage of the Yankees “softness” in that they never, or rarely retaliated for anything and I felt that the slide into home, while clean, was uncalled for.
With that said, I’m not sure Spring Training is the time to take care of business. Thankfully Jeter and Arod were not playing today, but Cano, Melky, Abreu etc were. If one of them got hurt it would be tragic.
So I like the play and the attitude, but it might have been a bit misplaced.

I know that each of us are now “daily” visitors waiting for the newest contest or the latest post. (This may be long, but gets to the point at the end, I promise). Some of us are watching “The Office” now, just because it might be the next trvia question topic, or we are now collecting memorabilia of Hughes just because he interacts with the fans.
I wanted to share an experience of mine that hopefully some if not all of you will encounter. My dream as a kid was to play pro ball just like all of us dreampt…after playing in college and seemingly losing hope as I did not speak with a scout after high school, I did the next best thing, get as close to the game as I could. Being a huge collector and bleeding pinstripes, I wanted to be in NY and be as close to the Stadium look, feel, and touch each day. I work for one of, if not the biggest sports memorabilia company in the world. I took the job 3 days before I graduated from college and one day before I heard from the Long Island Ducks baseball team asking me to come to an open tryout…..I figured, one gottem beats two gettums and I didnt take off of work, fearing work wouldnt be there when I needed to return. I dont necessarily regret it because of the experiences I have had while in my office. He wasnt the first athlete I met, wasnt the most famous, and most certainly will not be the last person I meet, although, he was one of the nicest. Phil knows who I am, and we have talked only but a few times. I just wanted to tell everyone that Phil is a good guy, and very down to Earth. I think he took a picture with about every person in the office and smiled doing so the whole time. He is a stand up guy, and a standout baseball player. I am proud to have Hughes don the Pinstripes (hopefully having MUCH

hey Phil, I’m just curious as to what happened today with Shelly and the Rays and what your thoughts are. There was no TV coverage today and the only info I got on it was what I read on the yanks website.
Phil thanks for communicating with us…my idea would be a Q&A from time to time. A guest appearance from someone from the team once in a while would be cool too…Keep up the good work!
I think its great what your doing with the blog. It would be pretty cool though if you gave us your own perspective of the season. It’d be a nice change of pace to see things from the players eyes rather than that of a sportswriter.

I didn’t go through all 190+ postings so this may have already been said, but how about telling us your favorite places to go to (clubs, resturants, bars) while visiting other cities. Also, what do you do with all the down time when on the road, especially being a pitcher and not playing everyday.
On a side note, because of todays festivities, what’s it like to be in a big league brawl? I don’t think you were there today but just asking in general. What about the feeling that you have to “retaliate” with one of your pitches?

Or, maybe you can do interviews with the press and flip the coin on them…. ask them questions and post them here.

I think a semi-recurring segment called “Overheard in the Clubhouse” would be cool. You don’t even have to reveal who the speaker was, just share some of the funnier, weirder, or more poignant things you’ve heard in there.

Love tommytsp’s comment. Would also love some sort of “reverse reporting.” So, the media report on you and fans like me read a lot of it. What if you report on the fans at the games- interesting stuff you observe at home and on the road. Interesting folks you meet when you’re signing baseballs at road games, your reaction to when the fans at The Stadium do the wave (booooooooo) while you’re pitching, or yell at the squirrell in RF while you guys are hitting. Would be great to get to read the ballpark from your eyes in the dugout or on the mound.
Oh yeah, and what about random pics of the post-game spread, and descriptions of who eats what (and how much!) as long as you don’t step on any toes.

I just saw that interview tonight! It was cool. You guys look like really normal everyday guys. Which is very refreshing. You all also looked like good friends which is really cool.
I was watching Pride, Power, Pinstripes tonight & I caught the Three Amigos interview. That is a good nickname by the way. When Kim mentioned your blog I wanted to check it out & I think it’s great. I think it’s a great way to stay connected with the fans, and it’s easy to see that the entries are done by you cause it’s not like a summation of weeks or months of events which I like. I know the season will keep you busy, but please keep us as updated as you can. You should definitely include some of the hot places you get to visit while on the road. Have a great season Phil..I know you and the rest of the team will do really well 🙂
