Good movies?

14 03 2008

Planning a quiet evening at home trying to put today’s outing behind me. Think I might rent a movie. Seen anything good lately? What do you suggest?

While we’re on the topic of suggestions, what should I do for the upcoming contests? I know just a straight up drawing would be the most fair, but that is just boring. Let me know what you think.

Phil,

Gone Baby Gone was pretty good, even though it is filled with Bostonians. Watched it last night. Check it out.

phil the movie city of god is amazing i know its a little random but I have been waiting for it from netflix for a few weeks and it just came im pretty excited.

anyways man dont worry nobody can be perfect all the time just be thankful you play in front of the most potent lineup n all of baseball and on the off chance u have a bad day they can cover you.
its all good brother

Nothing really new, but a few of my favorites: Boondock Saints, V for Vendetta, A Scanner Darkly (reaaally trippy (its animated…sorta) and complicated but worth watching…)

14 03 2008
psychopoo

P2 or Good Luck Chuck were pretty good.

How about guessing your next pitching line for a contest. Closest or exact prediction wins?

14 03 2008

Monty Python!

14 03 2008

Run Lola Run was really cool.

As for the contests, how about random guessing of a certain number? Like, Guess how many songs are loaded on your ipod or how many dvds you own. You know, things that people cant look up on the internet or have any other advantage

Have you seen Pride of the Yankees? It’s from 1941 and Babe Ruth plays himself. Worth a look if you’re ever in the mood for a sports movie…

emily17

well it depends on what kind of movie you want
i just saw Superbad recently and it was one of the grossest and stupidest movies ever, but by far the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile
Star Wars movies are always a good way to kill a few hours too
someone said Good Luck Chuck before
omg absolutely hilarious
ummm

and for contests idk
i think you should have Shelley make one up
after all one of the prizes is his bat

Definitely watch a comedy. I like old-school stuff like Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks is always good. Or Monty Python.

I like to watch archived Yankee games when I relax, but that would probably be weird for you to do, so definitely go with a comedy. 🙂

I’m already looking forward to a good bounce-back start from you on Wednesday. 🙂 It’ll all be fine. You’ve got killer stuff.

As for the contests, I like the idea of Yankee trivia. Maybe a series of questions that would be hard to look up online. Although I still contend that you should just send me the cork! 😀

14 03 2008
trvlc

For contests…

I do think it’s better to have some sort of question rather than picking someone at random, BUT I like how you did the Ian Kennedy nickname contest (drawing from the correct answers) better than first to answer correctly wins. A lot of us don’t get a chance that way, you know?

Looking forward to the next one. Thanks.

Here are two old one that are really good. The Game with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn—will keep you thinking. The other is Unfaithful with Diana Lane and Richard Gere—very sexy movie.

I second ‘Superbad’. It’s hilarious and will make you laugh. McLovin (a character in Superbad) is an American cinematic icon. ‘Big’ is also a sentimental favorite, with a brief scene in Yankee Stadium (I was at the game when they filmed it!).
Keep that chin up Phil! You’re doing great.

Contest idea (i’m staying with the movie theme):
Find out a favorite movie of 5 of your teammates, then post names and titles. See who can match the player with his favorite movie.

14 03 2008
dimagg5

Phil- Michael Clayton is pretty good, if you like Lawyers (and who doesn’t? 🙂 )

As for the contests, what about some Yankees trivia? Most of us here are Yankee fans and that would be pretty fair.

iheartny22

Gone Baby Gone is definitely a good movie choice. It’s by far the best movie I’ve seen lately. As far as contest ideas, I’m not sure about the questions, but I do think that you should pick winners from your regulars (such as myself)!!! Ever notice how your comments jump to over a thousand on contest days, and any other day you get 80 or so comments? Not that I want to be rewarded for visiting you everyday (contest or not), but you know I gotta look out for the other regulars too:) Have a great night and enjoy whatever movie you choose!

Into the Wild is a brilliant movie, but it’s not exactly a happy story. For something to take your mind of today’s game, how about Naked Gun, Airplane or Fletch? LOL I’m laughing just thinking about that.

Sorry about today, but it happens to everyone and it’s just a flukey thing that your FB was out of whack. You’ll be just fine next out……..

Hey Phil
Not in to movie’s….I always went into the X-room’s….LOL
Don’t worry about today it has happened to best of them…just got to get better the next time out……learn by your mistakes……
as far as the Contest your right about putting a name in a hat is boring, keep it the way it’s going But maybe you should give the runners up somethink- like a signed beer can from A-Rod LOL
I won one of the contest & got nothink….so a runner thing would be an idea

Damn Phil, just chill. Everyone has bad outings just be lucky that you have a damn good offense to counteract it. I guess its times like these where you go to mlb.com and watch you own Cleveland in the playoffs last year in Game 3 haha.

Your a rock kind of guy, Tenacious D always makes me laugh.

We should have something that involves skill of somesort, drawing, photoshop skills for a new banner(No offense its kinda wierd lol)

Don’t know if you’ve seen this, Phil (or anyone else who wants a chuckle) but Fanhouse found this funny parody song/video based on “Umbrella” about Piniella and the 07 Cubbies. There’s nothing Yankees-related in it, but any baseball fan will appreciate it! Figured it’ll cheer you up 😉

Phil,

Can’t go wrong with “The Princess Bride,” especially as it fits in well with the theme of the week (the cameo by Billy Crystal).

Out of curiosity, what went wrong today? Surprising line score, to say the least.

tjyankee21

I work in a video store so I see a good amount of movies. Some recent good movies that I have seen are Michael Clayton, American Gangster, and Gone Baby Gone. One warning I have is American Gangster is very long. It is over 2 and half hours and that is the regular version. They have an extended version on the DVD which I have not seen but I think it is almost 3 hours (I would not recommend that one). The story is great but it kind of drags on.

For contests, I think if you had some like guess your favorite movie or something like that. Kind of like your favorite Office quote one. They can take a while but reading through the guesses are always fun. I also think what you did with the Ian Kennedy nickname contest where you randomly selected the winner was better than just the first one who gets it right cause that can end the contest quickly.

Phil, take it as another day, tomorrow is new one.

Just saw Across the Universe, that was good, a little long but good and you will be humming beatles tunes for a good week. Or you can just go with old faithfull and do Donnie Brasco, Boondock Saints or GF1

For the contest, how about putting a bunch of jelly beans in a jar and having people guess how many there are? Only bad thing is you have to count them.

good luck Phil

iheartny–I know, right? 🙂 At work, I’ll just start randomly singing “I mean, who starts Yadier Molina?” in my head. It’s really clever. I like Lou. I used to despise him when he was managing the Mariners, mostly because my die-hard Yankee fan Nana was mad at him for not staying with the Yankees back in the day (she loved him when he was playing for us) but I like him now. Besides, Alex loves him, so he’s alright with me.

Hey Phil, as for contests, you should have a contest where people submit an MS paint or photoshop drawing of something, like Melky with the sunflower box on his head or Joba as a male stripper. The best picture gets the prize, as well as the drawing printed out and put up in the Yankees locker room

So in addition to trivia contests and stuff, maybe creative contests

Hey Phil,

I agree that stupid comedies are always good, so probably Superbad or Hotrod!
Just wondering, I’m from Australia, but for some reason i’m addicted to American Idol this season and I Love Brooke- do you watch it, and if so, do you have a favourite?
I would love to hear other peoples answers too 🙂

14 03 2008

Hey Dynastynny
Your right about that…but young pitcher try to overthrow…thats not the answer
Bill

14 03 2008
dynastynyy

I know, in theory, that’s a nice bit of advice, but when a pitcher’s arm “feels too good,” there isn’t a whole lot he can do in the moment to fix it. Even veteran pitchers go through this. Just feel good about the fact that the entire pitching staff is in good hands with Eiland and Girardi.

14 03 2008

Phil – amazingly cool T-Shirt you wore into the park today, 3/14 prior to your start in Sarasota. What band was it and where did you get it?

14 03 2008
nyy4life

I think you should go for The Bee Movie….lol That should help you forget about today’s game.
By the way, I once heard that even GREAT pitchers have bad outings……don’t sweat it. WE know you are better than what you showed today.

By the way, since there are over 1000 people entering your contests, how about asking people to pick a number between 1 and 10000. Whoever is closest to your number, wins!

14 03 2008

Drama – Shawshank Redemption
Comedy – emily17 hit it right on with Monty Python & The Holy Grail, but Old School or Wedding Crashers aregod choices.
Action – National Treasure

Contests- MAKE US WORK FOR THE PRIZES.

14 03 2008
shenbaseball10

Hey Phil, do you ever talk to Pat Neshek??

14 03 2008
bethyj

Good movies I’ve gotten on Netflix lately:
Blade Runner: The Final Cut, V For Vendetta, Eastern Promises, The Prestige, Robin Williams: Live on Broadway (not a movie, but damn funny and good enough to take anyone’s mind off things), The Machinist, Children Of Men.

The list goes on but those are my current favorites of those I’ve seen recently. (If you’re into watching TV on DVD I highly recommend Battlestar Galactica.)

Contest ideas:
-Maybe one that’s literally a drawing. People submit drawings of something you tell them to draw and you choose your favorite.
-Photo contest. Maybe you could have a contest of ‘pitching shots’ or ‘batting shots’, whatever kind of photos you want (doesn’t have to be baseball related) and you choose your favorite.
-Trivia is always a safe bet, but seeing as though most people here will know the Yankee related trivia maybe it could be some other trivia. Like how you did The Office trivia.
-Caption contest. You put up a photo and we enter a possible caption. You choose which you think is best/funniest or whatever.

That’s all I can come up with for contests at the moment…

14 03 2008
slayercommathe

The two Grindhouse movies, Death Proof and Planet Terror are GREAT movies, and definitely worth watching. The Descent is also great as well…although I’m a hardcore horror movie fan so I’m a little biased, lol.

14 03 2008

I love the caption idea. Those can always be fun, as long as they are board appropiate (sp).

14 03 2008

Millennium Actress was the last really good movie I’ve seen, but it’s a real tearjerker–probably not the sort of thing you want to watch to keep your mind off anything, unless that is indeed what you do to get your mind off of that sort of thing. Something to keep in mind, perhaps?

14 03 2008
bobber21

I really don’t have an idea for the contest but maybe for prizes you can give out Chien-Ming Wang stuff like an autograph ball or something.
If you like violent movies you should try The Punisher.

14 03 2008
xsandman42x

Don’t know if you’re looking for an action movie. Although some people didn’t seem to like it, Hitman came out this week. I thought it was pretty good. Plus the video game is good too.

14 03 2008
pinstripecameraman

Have you seen 3:10 to Yuma? That was pretty good…

14 03 2008
robbie42003

I know it’s a little late, but I think I would stick to the Big East tourney tonight. There’s some really good bball going on right now. It’s a good break before the baseball season starts.

As for the contest, how about an information scavenger hunt on whatever topic you choose; yankees, baseball, sports, movies, etc… Then just pick from the ones who have the correct answers. That’s a little bit of both of the past couple of contests. Plus, you can make as interesting as you like.

14 03 2008

30 days of Night wasn’t bad, I think thats out now. Its about a group of vampires trying to take out a town in alaska.
Touristas – a little gory but I liked it.

or go old school with:
The Godfather, Braveheart, Pride of the Yankees, 61*, The original B&W version of Angels in the Outfield (that disney one sucks), For Love of the Game, Rocky 1 and 2, Star Wars, The Boondock Saints (fits good with St. Patty’s day)

14 03 2008
agkanter

Something with a creative project would be cool (like writing, photos, etc.) A caption contest sounds like a lot of fun too.

As for a movie, I’ve heard Superbad is really funny, but I haven’t seen it yet.

P.S. Anyone know where to get a Phil Hughes t-shirt? I’ve found 65 ones on Ebay but nothing with 34, and I’ve heard the custom ones are kinda crappy.

14 03 2008

Phil, definitely go with Superbad. It’s a great comedy if you haven’t already seen it and should help get your mind off that rough outing. Oh well, get those out of the way in spring so you can dominate during the season, haha.

Phil – Old School (Artie Lange Rules), Scarface or Wedding Crashers…little bit of violence and laughs!! 🙂

Every outing can’t be the best..as I tell my son..Lou did not reach first base a little over 6.5 times out of 10!

You are the real deal.

14 03 2008

Phil–I know you probably don’t see these comments by the time they get down this far, but I just finished watching your ALDS Game 3 performance, and I’m even more blown away now than I was at the time (if that’s even possible). I can’t get over the grace and poise you exhibited, not to mention the sheer skill. The Indians looked foolish that night and you gave the Yankees a shot in the arm. 🙂 All I could say after that game was “Phil HUGHES!” over and over. Until your next heroic postseason appearance, I won’t cease to be amazed and proud of what you did that night.

14 03 2008

Love the fan photo contest idea. The best fan photo of Phil wins the game used pull-over. The best fan photo of Shelley wins the bats (and a set of game used SPIKES.)….

ahkanter–There’s nothing wrong with the custom shirts. I have a Farnsworth custom shirt from MLB.com and it looks like all the other shirts I bought from stores (I have 15 or 16 player shirts). It’s just a lot more crowded because his name’s so long 😉

14 03 2008

I just recently saw the new Hairspray. It was like watching candy 🙂

Just silly and fun, with some really talented singers.

Also, Ong Bak: the Thai Warrior has a TERRIBLE plot, but Tony Jaa is just so incredibly bad-ass. He just beats the ever-loving crap out of EVERYTHING he sees, and the fight scenes are unequivocally awesome. I literally sat there with my jaw hanging open while I watched him do some of that crazy muay-thai kickboxing stuff.

I was wanting to have a calm night last night so I watched We are Marshall, pretty good and uplifting…hope you don’t let today get to you. Like I saw you said on yankees.com, better to get it out during spring training. Whatever happens, I am pretty sure you’re one of our favorite Yankees win or lose! Oh and about the contests, I say make them fun, even if we don’t know what the heck it is about we can make up something interesting. Have a great weekend 🙂

Hey Phil …

Get those kinks out now ..it’s only Spring Training. No doubt you will be your old self next start.

I had a great day today ….my season package came and the tickets are so nice …pictures of Yankee Stadium and the Final Year Patch…plus the wording The Final Year on each ticket. Very cool !!! I’m looking forward to seeing you many times this year Phil … :o)

As far as a contest …I’m good with any Yankee trivia questions which will be partial to all Yankee fans …but…whatever you decide is great because it’s appreciated that you even do these contests at all …

Pat Neshek of the Twins says you will be giving out a car soon ….I hope those aren’t Office questions tho’ because I’ll have zero chance ….haha. No way he can compete with you in prizes on his blog …after all …your prizes are all Yankee related !!!!

Go Yankees 2008 !!!!

14 03 2008

Oh ..as far as movies ….anything baseball will do for me. I loved Pride of the Yankees, Field of Dreams, Major League, Bull Durham and a League of Their Own, Eight Men Out, The Natural … to name a few. I don’t know if after playing all day you would be into baseball movies …but …I LOVE ‘EM !!!!

Hey Phil i got netflix (well worth it for those of you who dont spend 8 months a year traveling around the country) and i saw Legend’s of the Fall, Boondock Saints, and The Prestige this week. All well worth your investment in time to check out.

I am going through the Six Feet Under series. Could be lame, but hey. I’m old so its ok.

I’m down with the cork. I’m all about the cork!

Other than that, just waiting for the season to start!

14 03 2008
phughesrocks

Hey Phil,
Everyone has bad games, so don’t worry. Especially because it’s spring training. As for the movies….obviously it’s a little too late, but I think School of Rock is probably the best movie of all time, I never get tired seeing that. Also, for a more serious but really good movie, Rescue Dawn with Christian Bale is also really good.

If you see this post Phil, do you mind telling us all which movie you went with or if you went with a movie at all?

Also, for the contests….
I really like the idea of the caption contest because that way everybody has an equal chance, but also everyone controls their own fate. So it’s not like other contests where you can get it right but you will be in a drawing with 500 other people and you’re chances aren’t very good. Also, we would have to actually work to win, and you’d probably enjoy looking through them.

(Also, the picking out of a hat from the regular posters would be nice. 🙂 even though it wouldn’t really be fair to other people)

14 03 2008

I did just see “Grizzly Man” which was very well done. I found that through out the movie, in the beginning I was sympathizing with him but at the end I thought he was a real moron!

Anything by Kevin Smith. I’d go with Mallrats.

As for the contests, I like the questions, but only when you draw from all correct answers. The Office trivia was good but it was over too soon.

phil, i think you should go with some comedy how about the sandlot the first.

14 03 2008

Wacky idea for a contest:

Take an article recapping your most recent starts, and have people re-write it. Backwards. It has to be a long article for it to work, so its more difficult and then the first person to do it successfully wins.

14 03 2008
yanksgal07

I just read through the comments and I agree ….I like the idea of posting a picture and having people add a caption…with you picking the best one. It could be very interesting and funny …maybe even find the next comedy writer for Letterman…lol.

Speaking of Letterman …I think sometime next week Biff Henderson will be doing his annual report from Spring Training. It’s always a hoot !!! Did he interview you ?? I’m sure there will Billy Crystal footage. I’ll be checking Letterman every night to make sure I don’t miss it….

Go Yankees 2008 !!!!

Hey Phil, tough game today better now than during the season! We Own the Night was pretty intense I just got that on netflix. How about some airplane trivia??

i definitely second ‘Old School’, but NOT ‘No Country…’ unless you wanna be depressed.

you cant go wrong with a classic comedy:
Animal House
Caddyshack
Vacation
Ghostbusters
Dumb and Dumber

or rent ‘Arrested Development’ or ‘Curb your Enthusiasm’.

14 03 2008
Travis G.

as for trivia, how about whoever guess the car you drive wins something (unless that’s already known).

14 03 2008
JobaRules

Contest Idea: (once the season starts)
Have people guess the total number of strike outs Yankee pitchers will record in a given week. Anything else utilizing stats would be cool too. Guessing the Yankee with the most stolen bases or home runs for a week. Maybe even predicting the runs, hits, and errors for a game. This would be especially cool for a game against a rival. Possibilities are endless.

14 03 2008
boodah35

Phil,
Its 11:15 pm, so im sure by now you saw your flick.
I would not be much help, b/c I have a 3 year old daughter, so I would only be making suggestions like:
Jungle Book (great movie BTW)
101 Dalmations, etc etc.

As far as a contest, I like what that bethyj proposed…actual drawings.
I think it would be hysterical.

Or like I posted a few days ago…your next pitching line.

BTW..just got MLB The Show 08…it is sick.

go out and see “In Bruges” – it’s a comic action flick, funny as hell. in the same line as snatch, boondock saints, etc – though with a deeper ending. really great movie.

riverwolf2005

Phil,
It happens man. Nobody is perfect.
I understand the drive and reasoning for the feelings and THAT is what makes you such a great competitor. ALWAYS keep that hunger and you KNOW you will be fine.
I wish EVERY player had the drive and desire for perfection you have. It makes you stronger mentally because you are striving for it on EVERY play and EVERY game you are in.
Players like you are what make being a Yankees fan so great. It shows that the team will be in great hands as long as you are in pinstripes for a long time.
It makes it even greater knowing that the Santana deal never happened. Not that we wanted it to happen anyhow with all of us rooting for the Powers that Be to keep the Young Guns, Baby Bombers, 3 Amigos or whatever you guys want to be called together.
Keep that drive and desire and I see another WS Championship in 2008!!!

14 03 2008
rpillai

Hey you werent that bad today, I liked that you didn’t walk anyone and you threw 65 percent strikes. Tip your cap to the other team I guess lol. Anyway I’m watching one of my all time favs, The Goonies! If that doesn’t cheer you up, nothing can.

14 03 2008
riverwolf2005

BTW- I cannot believe all of the fellow Yanks fans mentioning movies about baseball and NOBODY has said 61!!!
Especially with Billy Crystal this week. You guys are slipping! That is a GREAT movie about the M&M boys and what the team and they had to go thru.

14 03 2008
bigbronxballs77

I love the idea of posting a pic and having people write funny captions and you pick the ten best, and then randomly draw one.

Movies, eh? I say go rent season 1 of The Sopranos and watch the entire series. Slap on a Sopranos after an outting and you will forget all, good and bad. Delve into the life of Tony Soprano…..

Or Entourage…

14 03 2008
bigbronxballs77

Oooh– yeah, I do like 61*. What great movie, thought Barry Peppar played a great Roger Maris. Like the actor who plays Scooter in the booth–

Phil big Office fan, not sure if you watch 30 rock, i hadn’t but during the strike gave it a shot. That is an addictive show as well. Definitely worth a rent of the first season. As for today, I am sure you aren’t sweating it and if you are don’t. Good to get roughed up a bit every once in a while especially in spring training. You only learn to get better by failing first or some saying like that?!?! Anyway, hopefully you get what I mean. By the way did you ever end up having that Halo tourney with the Cards against the other Duncan and Reyes???

I guess you didn’t read my post up above …I mentioned “61” …along with a bunch of other baseball movies …I loved that movie especially the actors who played Mickey & Roger …Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper.

I just watched it again a few weeks ago on a bus trip to Cooperstown. We watched baseball movies going to the HOF and coming home. Great trip !!!

Go Yankees 2008 !!!

14 03 2008

61* would be great. Especially with you guys having just spent time with Billy Crystal. If you’re not looking a sports movie, you can’t go wrong with Tombstone, or the Shawshank Redemption.

Don’t sweat your outing yesterday, we all know what you can do. Greatest non-trade ever in Yankee history, holding on to you. Keep your head up Phil, we’re all behind you.

Can’t go wrong with a good comedy like OFFICE SPACE! I’m sure you’ve seen it already, but Superbad is one of the funniest new comedies I’ve seen in a while.

A classic gangster film worth re-watching: Goodfellas. I caught this on cable not too long ago. GREAT movie.

Out of the norm: Looking for a good indie? Try The Squid and The Whale. Set in Brooklyn and stars Jeff Daniels. Very good indie comedy.

Phil, Would you consider doing an NCAA Tourney Bracket Pool with prizes going to the top finishers? It would be pretty easy to set a group up on Yahoo and it would add a little March Madness to things around here….Would anyone else be into this?

15 03 2008

Phil,

A movie I just re-watched recently was A Bronx Tale, written by Chaz Palmenterri very big Yankee fan! I saw his one man show on Broadway he is brilliant. If you want to get your mind off of a bad day and like stupid funny movies here are my suggestions. They make me laugh when I have a bad day at work 1. Anchorman 2. Wedding Crashers 3. Old School and you can’t go worng with any Mel Brooks movie i.e Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Space Balls!!

OOPS I forgot-Clerks and Mall Rats are good movie to check out! I guess the Jersey Girl side is coming out. Enjoy

15 03 2008
usgrant

Remember it is how you bounce back and fight for it that is most important. Everyone has their bad outings. As for movies, I love the classics. That is where it’s at. Take anything with Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Jimmy Cagney and you are OK! And a fun little baseball movie is Safe at Home if you ever get a chance to see it. Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris are in it. I love that movie as well as Pride of the Yankees. I can’t get enough of The Sandlot as well! Or you can always go for the tearjerker with The Way We Were, LOL.

15 03 2008

Another one a little too late, you should watch Gone With The Wind. It’s really long and it’ll make you forget about your rough game and as Scarlett O’Hara says, tomorrow is another day!

Yankee trivia would be good for a contest.

15 03 2008
yanks232000

“300” is on cable currently and a great action, etc.
“Waiting…” is a very funny (and crude) movie well worth renting.
Can never go wrong with “The Godfather.”

For contest, how about baseball movie trivia or “Two and a Half Men” trivia?

15 03 2008
allenri2

What about some sort of contest where Phil posts some sort of topic or question and everyone posts an answer. This question wouldn’t work any more, but at the start of the year he could of had everyone put in a suggestion for a nickname for him joba and ian. Then he could of picked his favorite and that would be the winner. Everyone gets to participate and it could be enteratining.

Phil, I know you probably don’t read these comments when they get all the way down here, but as some other people said 300. That movie is pretty epic. If you’re a comedy guy, try Talladega Nights. Or Borat works well too. The Ocean movies are pretty funny too. Oh, I really like the idea of picking from your regulars in a contest. Just because I know I’m one of them. 😛

15 03 2008

IDK about the movie but as for the contests, you’re right the drawings are boring, so i think it should be a sort of thing deciding who wins the personal awards at the end of the season and then whoever gets the most right wins.

Phil did you ever try Redbox Phil $1 for the latest movies that just came out! I checked to see if they had any locations in Tampa, but they don’t. You can still do it on line though and get it in the mail! And then you can try it at a Redbox location when you get back to NY, I know they have them in NY cause Im in Albany NY. Heres the link . Apocalypto is the best movie I’ve seen in a loooong time. So good, in fact, that as soon as I finished watching it I sat the wife down & watched it w/her (she, too, was blown away). If you can handle another sub-titled movie, Pan’s Labyrinth is pretty amazing.
If you’re feeling a comedy, Superbad is right on!

15 03 2008
h8boston

American Gangster and Gone Baby Gone are the most recent ones I saw and I loved them both.
As far as a contest idea, how about a Phil Hughes nickname contest? You could narrow it down and have your readers vote on them.

15 03 2008
yankeepankee

Too late for last night, but Dodgeball is such a good underdog movie! I love Ben Stiller movies! Zoolander is another good one! Nothing like a good walk-off! And the classic There’s Something About Mary!

Don’t worry about the game. It’s spring training. Now’s the time to get out all the kinks. Everyone has bad days. I recall Rocket being taken out in the 2nd inning of a game last year! Remember 162 games!

Alright Phil, two movies you should see if you haven’t already. Memento and No Country for Old Men. If you watch No Country turn it off about 3 quarters of the way through. You’ll be glad you did.

watched 3:10 to yuma and american gangster over the last few weeks, both were good.

for the contest, some sort of trivia, then have a drawing from the correct answers. everyone has a chance that way.

yankeefaninidaho

Look here Poohs, the best movie to watch to make you feel great about life is Roadhouse. Patrick Swayze is taking names and kicking a$$. It’s a classic. Predator is also an alltime winner. The scene where they’re just mowing down the jungle is priceless. Also, The Usual Suspects, best movie of all time.

Rock Star: Watch “Old School”, laugh, have a short memory, then pound the strike zone. When you’re 0-2 on every batter next game and you guys win, the only thing you’ll be worried about is what movie you’ll be watching after the game.

15 03 2008
drewnasty98

I always liked The Break Up….Vince Vaugh is classic and Jennifer Anniston is preety hot so you cant really go wrong

I think the contests are preety fair but i think if you have it that the first person to answer wins then i dont think thats really fair to everyone i think everyone who gets the answers right should get put into a drawing, something along those lines

Dont worry about your outing, your still the man

My idea for a give-a-way wouldn’t reward the person until the end of the season, but it would be cool to have a projection based give-a-way. And then maybe you can put something game-used up for the prize. It would be awesome getting a game used item from your first cy young award winning year.

My idea, How many games will the Yankees win in ’08?

And the tiebreaker for users who guess the number right, How many games will Phil win in ’08?

15 03 2008

15 03 2008
bkny27

just watched “3:10 to yuma”, it was pretty good. also, “me, you, and everyone we know” was good, it won sundance film award in 2005. could always watch a classic, like “goodfellas”, or a quotable comedy like “anchorman” (you ate the whole wheel of cheddar? I’m not even mad, that’s amazing!).

contest ideas: you could have everyone guess which movie you ended up getting, but maybe give a hint, like genre

you could also do something regarding ncaa tourny, like who will be the #12 seed in the west, or something like that.

if you or other teamates do fantasy baseball, could have us guess who was the last pick of the draft, or something with the nfl draft maybe.

15 03 2008
billyb09

No Coutry For Old Men, crazy movie that you might need to watch more then once.

As for the contest, I agree with some of the others. I like the idea of picking something random like the # of songs on your ipod. Things people can’t look up.

Found your blog when Pat Neshek (pitcher for the Twins) talked about it in his blog (patneshek.com), pretty cool blog, keep it up.

As far as recent movies are concerned, Jumper was one of the best action movies I’ve seen in a long while. Juno was far better than I had ever expected.

I’m sure you’ve seen it, but Wedding Crashers is quite possibly the funniest movie ever.

15 03 2008
bethnyyfan

When you’re having a bad day you have to go to the classics: The Big Lebowski, Animal House, Office Space, Fargo, Clerks

Alll those silly ass things that you can watch over and over again.

As for contests…hmmm….lessee: Why don’t you have a “name that…” whatever and the answer you like best wins. Like Dwight and Angela are called Dwangela….but you can think of all kinds of things…

tell us what your favorite sandwich is and we’ll come up with a name for it.

give us the name of a movie and we’ll come up with a funny caption or something like that.

Or if Stanley and Phyllis have an affair: write the ending (Stanley and Bob Vance have a boxing match in the warehouse referee’d by Darryl).

The sky is really the limit and you just choose the one you like best.

There’s no way to cheat. 🙂

15 03 2008

How about you watch some game film of the Red Sox, Indians and Angels hitters!

Just kidding. Try “Awake” it was a pretty cool movie. “We Own The Night” was very good as well. Avoid Mr. Woodcock, it’s awful.

15 03 2008
garyg123

How about game predictions. For each upcoming game, you ask for predictions in five categories. most points win. For example categories could include
1. player of the game
2. how many innings does the starter go
3. total runs scored by yankees
4. total earned runs
5. total yankee pitchers
6. home runs
etc.
then, since there will be aa number of ties, have a hard tie breaker, closest wins, e.g. total attendance.

Regarding the contests:

I believe that they shouldn’t be random drawings or trivia. It shouldn’t be drawing at random because like you said before, they are too boring. But they shouldn’t be trivia, because like you saw in the last one, it ends too quickly, and all of the answers can be looked up online. Also, if someone is lucky enough to be on when you post the question, they get an advantage.

The contests probably should be something like, “Guess the Score of Tomorrow’s Yankee Game,” “Guess How Many Hits The Yankees Get,” “Guess Who Is The First Minor Leaguer To Get Called Up This Season,” etc., so that no one has an advantage if they get there early. However, questions that have answers that no one outside of the Yankees would know the answer to are good too, like the question about Ian Kennedy’s nickname.

You should also stick with drawing one person from the people who have the right answer, like you did with the Ian Kennedy contest.

P.S. Thanks for doing the contests! It’s awesome that you do this!

Thanks for the Autograph today Phil…

15 03 2008
phughesrocks

I agree with garyg123 and hallofamer200. The contests should be Yankee related and ones that are fair to everyone, but will eliminate enough people that if you get it right, you’ll have a good chance of being selected from a hat. For example, pitching line, or number of hits, or anything else, or even a combination of stats. This way, nobody has an unfair advantage, its fun for everyone, and you don’t have to do any work. 🙂 Also, this might be too complicated, but people could guess your stats for the year, and at the end of the year, a pool of people who are within 5(units of whatever, k’s, era) of all the stats will get an opportunity to win.
Keep up the good work. This blog is awesome no matter what you do. Good luck this season. Go Yankees 2008!

P.S. By the way, since you’ve already signed 2000 autographs at once, how cool, and unrealistic, would it be for you to sign an autograph for everyone who visits this blog regularly! Just a stupid idea.

15 03 2008
nyy4life

Phil has already signed THOUSANDS of autographs for card companys. He just signed 2000 for Topps but he had already signed maybe 5000 of cards along the way. Go over to eBay and you will be amazed how many different cards he has autographed. I have quite a few myself, including one that he only signed 47 of.
Anyway, I am up for any kind of contest, as long as its fair for everyone.

15 03 2008
rfarren

For you contest you should ask questions that most people could get right. Then instead of just picking the first one who gets it right chose a random number like 27. Then the 27th person to get the question right gets the prize. In order for this to work you wouldn’t be able to tell us the “magic” number, but after whoever won you could tell us. To make it fun you could pick numbers that have a meaning to you. That way you can give a post that explains why you chose that number.

I haven’t read any of the comments, but I say forget a movie. Rent the Wire season 1 and start plugging through the amazing drama of Baltimore’s west side drug trade. Great show.

Don’t know if you’re a sci-fi person, but even if you’re not, GALAXY QUEST is one the most hilarious movies ever made, best satire I’ve ever seen!

Or anything with Christian Bale – Batman Begins, The Prestige, etc. – and also “Enchanted” is coming out this week and it was fantastic.

Good luck choosing from the gazillion choices up here!

Hey guys
This is a baseball blog………Phil is doing an unblieveble job…..no Yankee has ever done this…….as a player or a person……I want to know whats going in side the team….. not who’s the Star in the next Movie

15 03 2008

condobil2. I’ve said in the past that I want to keep this blog about mainly off the wall stuff. I like to relax my mind and get away from baseball as much as possible away from the field.

I actually love the fact that this blog goes beyond baseball. It would be pretty boring if everything on here was just a repitition of stuff you could read in the media or see on ESPN. It’s also nice to be able to relate to Phil just as a person, and not always as a baseball player.

And I can totally understand where Phil’s coming from…after a long day of school or work, it’s the last thing I want to talk about too. Everyone needs a diversion 🙂

Into the Wild is pretty new and a great man movie. If you love the outdoors, it is a must see.

15 03 2008
entersandman42

I’m sure you’ve already made your decision, but I will echo the sentiment for SuperBad. If you’ve never seen it, you must see it…RIGHT NOW!! In fact, if you haven’t seen it, you need to skip the game tomorrow (I assume there’s a game tomorrow) and see this movie. It’s that funny.

As for the contest, I think it should be off the wall stuff. You commented earlier that you want to keep this blog light and “off the wall” so make it something off the wall. I’m not exactly sure what that is though! Something that is completely unique. Like how many shrimp cocktails did Edwar Ramirez eat last year on the flight to Detroit?

Obviously I am making that up, but I’m sure there are completely mundane things that happen on flights, layovers, off days etc. that could easily become a contest.

That would satisfy the “off the wall” plus it would provide us with that “behind the scenes” look that we all crave.

Just my two cents Phil.

Thanks.

Phil, I wanted to mention some thing to you about signing things. The more things you sign, the less valuable it becomes because there are so many things you sign. Joe Namath signs every thing and when I sell his stuff on ebay, it doesn’t do as well as the great players that don’t sign as much. Some times less is more.

YankeesDaily

i think it’s cool that phil signs everything, that way it increases my chances of getting his autograph. the last thing you want is a stingy player who wants his signature selling for thousands of dollars on the internet!

16 03 2008

Hey Phil, hope all is well.

One IDEA for a potential contest is a “guess the number” type. You can pick a number from 1 to lets say 1000 and the person who guesses the number that you wrote down wins that prize.

Hey Phil,
You don’t have time for a movie after an outing like that! Get out there and practice some more! jeesh! LOL Just kidding buddy…Life Aquatic with Bill Murray is a great flick, check that out sometime. It has a great sound track too.

Hey Phil I’m extremely late with this but don’t watch a serious movie! I definitely suggest going for Hot Fuzz. Shaun of the Dead is another great Simon Pegg movie but go for Hot Fuzz man.

Juno is a very well done movie. That’ll be my 1st choice. for recent movies. Has the best dialogue I’ve heard in years. it’s only 90 mins if you’re pressed for time.

If you’re going to watch Gone With The Wind, that’ll require you to have dinner ready beofre you sit down to it.

As for a contest, I don’t know if you’ve revealed your favorite movies anywhere, but that could be a decent contest. Say your favorite top 5 movies. Person(s) gets the most correct wins a brand new car with Yankee pinstriping ! !You could give us a break by telling us what your favorite genre is.

DAY ZERO starring Elijah Wood, Chris Klein, and Jon Bernthal as 3 friends who get drafted in NYC in the near future and have 30 days to report for duty.

I gotta tell you, I rented this from Blockbuster on a whim and was totally blown away. Phil as a young guy I think you and all the other younger Yankees should watch this film.

Let’s all count our blessings.

Phil if you like The Office, you’ll love Arrested Development. Get Season 1 on DVD. I Netflxed the whole lot and howled with laughter.

For contest: what about random trivia about you guys. Just dumb funfacts. “Guess which two current yankee coaches or players I had dinner with tonight?” Or “which member of the Seattle Mariners went to high school with Ian” or something like that.

OR make something related to march madness?

18 03 2008
