Sorry for the lack of posting lately. The travel along with being in hotels makes it tough. I haven’t had a chance to watch the new episode of The Office yet which I’m bummed about. The internet connection hasn’t been solid enough for me to watch it on nbc.com. I’ll figure something out though. I’ll try to get a contest up sometime soon. Maybe when we get to Tampa. Hope everyone is doing well.
Hey Phil, good luck tomorrow 🙂 hopefully your first Fenway start will be one to remember!!
The Office was definitely worth the wait. It was as uncomfortable and hilarious as ever. You’re going to love the episode and there were lots of laugh out loud moments. Enjoy it and good luck tomorrow!
Good luck tomorrow!
Sounds good. Good luck tomorrow against Dice-K! Would be nice to take the first series against the Sox.

Kevin
Good luck tomorrow, Phil – you have a family of Maine-iacs rootin’ hard for you and the Yanks!
Hey Phil

Tatis
Good luck tomorrow Phil! Can’t wait to see you pitch! Should be an exciting game, always is against the sox. enjoy it! <33
Phil- good luck against the sox 2m nite. Get ur velocity back up to the mid 90s please. You’ll do great just stay relaxed those boston fans can be reals jerks sometimes.
I think he knows how to pitch….
Good luck tomorrow Phil.
Good Luck against the blosox tomorrow Phil.
Like everyone else has already said, The Office episode was awesome this past week. Do you normally watch scrubs right after it? Because that was a good one also.
One last question lol, what have the other guys said about the “suspected jinx” shirt in the new stadium?
Look forward to seeing you pitch against Boston tomorrow… The new office episode was alright. I’m sure there will be better though.
Hey Phil.
We totally understand that it’s hard to post on the road. It’s always great to hear from you whenever you get a chance.
Good luck tomorrow night! Go get ’em 😈
psh boston…just another team right?
good luck tomorrow dude…no hitter i can feel it lol
Gotta be surreal pitching to Boston for the first time. I’m sure you’ll do fine.
You should look into tethering a 3G phone with your laptop. It can pretty much guarantee you a fast connection in any major market.
good luck tomorrow!!
and the Office was def. worth the wait. So great to have those crazy kids back.
We forgive you. lol Good luck tomorrow! Beat those Sox!
You should totally be sleeping and not up posting blogs on the internetz. Don’t you have something important to do tomorrow night? I forget what…. It’ll come to me…
Oh, and I know how you feel about the Office. I’m still waiting for House to come back on.
Alright, take care. I’d wish you luck, but you don’t need it 🙂
-Alex
I kind of figured that you were too busy with all of the traveling to post. Don’t worry, I think we all understand.
Just out of curiosity, are you sleeping okay in the hotels? Most people I know, myself included, generally don’t sleep well, and we need you all rested up for your starts.
And speaking of sleep, I think that’s what I’m going to do… I’m tired after screaming through the last 3 innings of the 11 inning game my school played.
all is well phil, the office was amazing, no big shock, but try to watch it asap before someone spoils something.
anyway, goodluck tomorrow, kick the red sox ass!
No need to apologize. I’m sure the travel etc has been very difficult this yearly season. Good thing though you guys will get it out of the way early and have more games at home later in the season.
Good luck tomorrow night.
The game isn’t till 8pm tomorrow night, thanks espn!!
Go get ’em Phil!
Good Luck.
Go get ’em Phil!
Good Luck.
Good luck tomorrow.
You nodded to me during the rain delay today while you were in the dugout lol
Good luck tomorrow!
Enjoy the Office when you finally get to watch it…so good!
Just read an article that said you were a big sox fan. Man I hope your dad isn’t too sad you’re now a Yank. I hope you know we’re all happy you’re on our team. Good luck!!! and don’t forget to have fun.
I think we can all forgive you for being a little busy…
Can’t wait to watch you on the mound tomorrow!!
Thought about going to the game tomorrow night to see you pitch but its probably not gonna happen. I went to the first game of the series where Wang decided to be awesome. It was still fun though. Good luck tomorrow and remember, you will always be a Boston fan deep down.
Phil, Don’t worry about us!! Just focus on tomorrow!! We need you and we need this win!! Good luck!!

Good luck tomorrow Phil!!
Also, I loved the episode of the office. A lot of people thought it was dark, but I thought it was great. And the song in it is SO catchy.
hey phil! good luck tomorrow!!! i live in rhode island (unfortunately too close to the red sox for my liking) and i wish that i could be there tomorrow , but i know you will do great.
phil you got your work cut out for you tomorrow against dice-k, he’s been pitching as good as anyone in the AL. hope you do well.

Good luck tomorrow night Phil. Hope you have a great game!
Hey Phil,
Good luck tomorrow. No need to think aboot Canada, even though some people on this blog might always suggest it. Just focus on what you do best, and ignore canada day. You are better than that. Go Yanks!
Good Luck Hope the fans treat you right and you get the first win of 2008 in boston tonight
wish you do well tomorrow
Hey Phil,
Good luck at Fenway, I have a feeling your getting your first win of the 2008 season
That’s ok, Phil. Just take your frustration at missing The Office out on the Red Sox! How is it for you to be wearing the pinstripes and facing the Red Sox at Fenway being that you have rooted for them most of your life? Like I said, I won’t hold it against you because we all make mistakes. ; ) Just pitch how you know how to pitch and you will be fine. Go Yanks! And luckily on to some warm weather tomorrow.
Best of luck tonight in Boston. The Office episode from Thursday was outstanding.
Jan and Michael really could use some counseling…I thought it was a great episode.
Good to hear from you, Phil….good luck tonight in Beantown.
-Joe

We understand when you can’t make posts you are only playing for the Yankees lol. Best of like tonight!!!
I’d say you’re posting pretty well for someone who’s kind of a pro baseball player. Good luck with the game and The Office- both will be awesome. 🙂
The Office was tremendous this week. GOOD LUCK TONIGHT!!

K
HEY PHIL , GOOD LUCK TODAY AGAINST BOSTON , AND GOOD LUCK THIS YEAR
#34 ALL DAY
CODY SOBCZAK
Best of luck today Phil. Me and my friends will definitely be watching and cheering you on!!
Phil! We all understand that you couldn’t post. I’m so excited/nervous about tonight, so I can’t imagine how you feel. I hope the bats get going; I saw a ton of good signs last night, including Robbie’s last at-bat. By the time you see these comments we’ll all know the outcome, I’m sure, but good luck anyway!! We all know you can do it!
Good luck tonight Phil! We’ll be watching from Indiana!
good luck tonight phil!
Good Luck tonight Phil ❤
The world is focused in on Phil and he’s talking about “The Office.” Ha, ha. I guess you really do block out the pressure. Good luck tonight.
Good luck on your start tonight Phil. I really wish you nothing but the best. Hopefully we can take the series and crush those sox hard. =]
http://www.adiehardyankeesfan.blogspot.com
Good Luck tonight! Win the series for us!
Good luck tonight Phil! Play well!
http://310tojoba.blogspot.com/

Good Luck on the game tonight Phil! I love watching you pitch.
Good luck at today’s game Phil!
Good Luck tonight Phil.
good luck (have you pitched at Fenway) (it seems like the weirdest park in the world)
Good luck tonight! Santana didn’t look too good yesterday, it’s great we didn’t trade you.
And The Office was hilarious as always, it’s so good to have it back.
http://jeterchrist.blogspot.com
Good luck tonight against Boston, Phil. Kick some Red Sox ass!
Good luck Phil, you’ll be great! 🙂
Yeah Phil, good luck tonight! I’ll be watching and cheering you on. Go Yanks!
Good luck tonight Phil!! P.s now you’ve got me starting to become obsessed with The Office!
Good Luck tonight Phil. Lets put these Red Sox away tonight!
Phil – you grew up a Sox fan in CA? We need you to dominate tonight to make up for it! HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHES!
Good luck tonight Phil! I’m sure you’ll be awesome.
Oh and I bought your player shirt at Modell’s and when I wore it to Blockbuster, a guy that works there said he liked it. It was pretty cool. 🙂
Hey Phil just wanted to say that if you can not get “The Office” off of the NBC site you can try the site http://www.hulu.com
They have episodes from alot of different shows.
Phil HAMMER that strike zone tonight!!! We all have faith in you!
I don’t think there’s any need to apologize for not posting . . . we all understand how insanely busy you must be. Well, anyway, good luck in your start tonight (even though you probably won’t read this until after your start) and I hope you get a chance to watch The Office soon . . . apparently it was a good episode (I wouldn’t know; I don’t watch The Office).
Good Luck Tonight Phil!
Phil: I’m sure you’re not worried about your first start at Fenway — biggest rivalry in sports, whatever — but if you need a little extra pressure, here you go: I’m in a tight game in my head-to-head fantasy league and a win by you tonight puts me over the top, OK? Now go out there and kick some Red Sock ass, killer.
Good Luck Today!!!!
watching the game right now! we all know its tough to post new updates so its no problem!
watching the game right now! we all know its tough to post new updates so its no problem!
hey phil,
i dont know if you check your blog between innings but… you’re getting rocked.
Phil.. I want you to know that we still love and support you even through your struggles.. Hey you’re 21.. this is all a learning process.. and we’re willing to wait. Keep your head up sweety.
Tough first inning PH.Hang in their.
Yeah Phil, hang in there! All of us Yankees fans are rooting for you!! I’m 21 and can’t even IMAGINE that kind of pressure! Just keep your head held high and don’t let the damn bosox see you sweat!!!
GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!
as we say up north, don’t worry aBOOT it Phil, it’s just Manny being Manny out there, can’t control that, however you did make him look foolish with that sinker he watched get called for a strike!
You’ll get ’em next time Phil.
hey there, I am pretty positive you wont read this. oh well. I can’t even imagine the pressure you are under and having to deal with stupid people who praise you one minute and hate you the next. You’ll come around. Be patient with yourself, you know what you can bring to the mound. I hope people are patient with you, no offense to anyone, by NY has some harsh fans.
Still proud to call myself a supporter of Phil Hughes 🙂
Phil,
You seem very bat shy, I think you’ve been spending to much time with Mike Mussina. Avoid him like the plague.
Oh, and the ump was squeezing you in the first, you can’t nibble when the ump won’t give you the corners.
Greg C.
Keep your head up Phil!!
hey man what happened tonight? Seemed like you and molina didnt have the right signs. Win next week man. Youre gonna be the one who will make or break our season
No he won’t nyyankeefan185,
You can’t expect a 21 year old kid to make or break the Yankees season. If the bullpen does it’s job and Wang, Pettitte and Moose do their jobs, this team should be fine, regardless of what Kennedy and Hughes do.
gcohen your an idiot
Hughes Kennedy and Joba are going to be to be the core of this team for the next fifteen years. Stop being a hater and stop bitching!!
Glad to hear you’re a fan of The Office.
Perhaps you can get a tour of Dunder Mifflin when they send you back to Scranton.
I can’t remember seeing a guy more overmatched.
What is it now??? Something like 94 baserunners in 11 innings pitched???
You are putting the Yankees behind the 8-ball, and you are DESTROYING the bullpen in the process.
Tell Michael, Dwight, Jim and Pam I said, Hi!
I’m an idiot because I don’t think we have to rely on a 21 year old to make or break our season? OK.
And I know those three are this team’s future, where did I say anything different.
And how am I being a hater?
Phil, even though I am a life long Red Sox fan, you are one of my favorite young players.
Tough game tonight. I’m sure the temps and adjusting to a new catcher had something to do with it.
That curve was looking awesome though. It ate Pedroia up.
Anyways, hope to see you over on the beckett boards again.
Better Luck on your next start,
John Mo
your an idiot because you are complaining about Phil Hughes not throwing a perfect game every time he is on the mound.
HEY PHIL, I THOUGHT YOU WERE A POWER PITCHER? THAT 89MPH HEAT ISN’T GOING TO CUT IT IN THE BIGS. YOU LOOKED LIKE A SCARED LITTLE GIRL OUT ON THE MOUND TONIGHT. 7 RUNS IN 2 INNINGS? DISGUSTING. 3 INNINGS AGAINST THE ROYALS? A JOKE.
I HOPE THEY HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION FOR YOU AT SCRANTON, SO YOU CAN UPDATE YOUR LITTLE BLOG.
PHIL “89MPH” HUGHES…LOL!!!!!!
THE YANKEES PASSED UP ON JOHAN SANTANA FOR A SOFT TOSSING 21 YEAR OLD MUSSINA.
“your an idiot because you are complaining about Phil Hughes not throwing a perfect game every time he is on the mound.”
No I’m not. All I said was he looked a little bat shy. Because he did. Besides that I’m fully confident that he will be a very good pitcher for the Yankees for a long time.
HES BAT SHY BECAUSE HIS 89MPH FASTBALLS GOT SMACKED AROUND BY THE ROYALS. I’D BE BAT SHY TOO IF I HAD NO FASTBALL!!!
hey 89 he was hitting 93-94 all night, and he’s the number 3 starter for the New York Yankees, what the hell are you? Does it make you feel better to try and put down a proffesional athlete who will make more in a year than you will in your whole life?
Get a life d-bag
“your an idiot because you are complaining about Phil Hughes not throwing a perfect game every time he is on the mound.”
……………………………………….
I don’t think anybody is expecting a perfect game… Something better than 3 2/3 innings per start, a run every inning and 24 baserunners in 11 IP’s might be nice, though.
We’re not expecting perfect, just something a little north of PATHETIC!
The guy is completely overwhelmed.
Well his velocity has speeded up as the weather has, and i’ve noticed it seeems as if the Umps squeeze him everytime, thats why hitting the corners everytime can be a hit or miss. Such as how Jacoby Ellsbury was easily out in the first AB of the game today.
hang in there phil! and ignore all the negative comments..
Wow. It seems like all the loonies came out tonight. Whiners have no spot on the Yankee fandom. Stay away from the ledge…
Phil will be ok. He’s been great in the minors and he’s shown that he can pitch in the big leagues. It’s not like he’s gonna forget all of this all of a sudden. It’s called growing pains.
Phil, don’t listen to that m oronic fan.. you threw 93-94 tonight.. velocity was fine.
hey 89 he was hitting 93-94 all night, and he’s the number 3 starter for the New York Yankees, what the hell are you? Does it make you feel better to try and put down a proffesional athlete who will make more in a year than you will in your whole life?
=============
YEAH, 93-94 ACCORDING TO THE ESPN GUN. MY GRANDMOTHER CAN THROW 95MPH ACCORDING TO THE ESPN GUNS.
FACE IT, PHIL “89MPH” HUGHES IS GOING TO GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BUSTS IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME! TO THINK, YOU COULD HAVE HAD THE BEST LEFT-HANDED PITCHER OF OUR TIME, INSTEAD YOU HUNG ON TO THE NEXT PAUL BYRD. LMAO!!!!!!!!
Chin up phil, your EXTREMELY young.
AND EXTREMELY OVERWHELMED.
You got some good footage from tonight, Phil. Study hard! No Office until you do!
Hey Phil- we all know what you’ve got. You’re a great pitcher and you probably know well enough to ignore people who think they’re smart enough to talk about you like that after one not-so-perfect night.
And how do you determine that the ESPN gun is off? Cause you want it to? Cause you want to have more reasons to put down Phil Hughes? Your a retard.
HEY PINSTRIPED HOEBAG, DID YOU MISS HIS LAST START? 3 INNINGS AGAINST THE ROYALS!!
“Your a retard.”
I THINK YOU MEAN ‘YOU’RE’, EINSTEIN.
Man……i wish Yankees had Johan Santana. Well….somebody that ain’t scared to pitch against the Red Sux in Fenway! Can you ask Girardi to send you down to AAA? Bring Kennedy with you too. Both you guys need to work on growing a pair!
hang tough Phil…i know you don’t need to hear this but you are extremely talented…everybody that truly knows the game of baseball can see this. Anyone who has truly played know its a game of failures. The only success in baseball is determined by what you get from your failures. Relax, regroup and just go out there and have fun. we all know you will be great. good luck Phil.
Nothing like having your starting pitcher shove a mountain in front of the offense at the beginning of every game.
Enjoy the bus ride back to Scranton, Phil.
89mphfastball…..you still mad about your Mets last year? Get over it. Be happy that you got Santana. The A-Rod of pitching!
don’t let tonight get to you Phil there is a lot of baseball to get to and we all know there will be days like this and days where you have no hitter stuff.
Plus you’re the youngest pitcher in the bigs this is a great way to grow
guys don’t let these trolls get to you. they just come looking for fights.
and we all know the saying about arguing on the internet. even if you win you’re still retarded
hang in there phil…
Kevin
I’m sure you ignore all these bashers that come in here and right random crap, tough loss tonight but you will learn a bunch more as the season progresses im sure 🙂 Hang in there man, there will be plenty more oppurtunities against the sox!!
89 fastball,
don’t you have anything better to do than hang out on a Yankee blog? why are you so concerned with what we’re doing? homo…….
how many people on this blog are major league pitchers? last time i checked.. just one. So give the guy a break he’s the youngest pitcher in the league and some people expect 8 shutout innings every time out. Theres gunna be a learning curve and some growing pains. Cut him some slack.
89mphfastball go get a life and shut the hell up, phil should throw one of his fastballs in your face, anyway phil it’s just one game, a week from now no one will even remember this, if there were any positives it was the velocity and movement on your fastball, just keep at it man and make us proud!
Ha, ha. I can’t believe someone has so little to do in his or her life that they would make up an account just to dis Phil. Seriously, get a life. Even if Phil somehow DID bust, he would have accomplished more than you ever have. He’s a twenty-one-year-old starting for the New York Yankees. And you’re sitting on your computer getting off on insulting him. Notice the difference in position? Why do I get the feeling 89mphfastball is just Steve Lombardi masturbating all over himself because he’s so happy Phil struggled at Fenway?
Hey Phil
Hey give phil a back he is kid for california that is not use to cool weather.
and I am for and live in california
Three Words for you…
Scranton / Wilkes-Barre
The Kei to the season may be the return of Igawa unless they trade him since he is pitching pretty decently at SWB…
Get off his back, It’s not his fault the umpire was horrible tonight, he was calling Balls for Phil that he called Strike for Matsuzaka. Keep your head up, next outing will be better.
Ah, the Internet, where every stooge can suddenly become a Major League pitching coach. Ignore the haters, Phil. Two words: Strike one. You’re here for a reason.
89mph,
Yankee fan or not, why would you come on to Phil’s website to act like that? Phil is one of the few MLB players who take the time out to interact with his fans. It’s people like you who could change that if you keep acting the way you are. So again, whether or not you are a Yankee fan or not, whether or not you root against Yankee players like Phil Hughes or not, have some respect for him being that he is nice enough to communicate with his fans and don’t ruin it for everyone else!!!
Hang in there Phil. We’re still behind you.
Igawa is proven suckage and we don’t want him back.
You are awesome, Phil. Although there are only a few lame-as* bitter Red Sox/Mets fans on here please ignore them and focus on everyone else that knows you are smokin’. Fair weather bloggers that are just instigating for their own whacked out sense of fun. We’ll be rooting for you on your next outing. Stay positive and confident!
sorry about the tough game last night phil. hang in there.. just remember to have fun, believe in yourself, and go get ’em the next time. i’m praying for ya!
btw, Phillipians 4:13 is a great verse for some encouragement if you’re interested.. God bless! 🙂
Chalk it up to a cold night in Boston… Can’t be fun pitching in that weather in that environment… Keep your head up you will face them about 55 more times in your career….
Tough weekend in Boston….Hang in there! it will get better. I’ll be at the Stadium on Wednesday…Keep on pushing and never stop believing! LET’S GO PHIL FRANCHISE!
WTF!!!!!!!!!! You looked TERRIBLE! Darrell Rasner is playing pretty well in Scranton. Get your head together or you will be swithing spots with Rasner and hanging out with your buddies at Dunder Mifflin a little more than you would like!
can we all stop giving phil advice?
i think eiland and the staff are knowledgeable enough to help him along when he hits some troubles
also he’s a pro athlete and he’s mad it this far at his young age, so i think he can do the rest without our help too
i’m not saying dont encourage him, you jsut dont need to try to teach him how to pitch in the majors
i think he’ll figure that out
peace
go phil!
if you get a chance to talk to Joba, let him know that we are praying for his dad and hoping for a full recovery.
phil-
i recently watched the new ep of the office on http://www.surfthechannel.net…i was in a hotel w/ a bad connection too and just let it load for a few hours then it was good from there.
Phil,
I am very excited about this new season. You are the main reason. I hope you do not get discouraged about last night. There will be more opportunities to face Boston and show them what you got. You will do well this season. Good luck on your next start!
Has everybody forgotten Phil’s first start of the year? He DOMINATED the blue jays, who aren’t a shabby team! And don’t forget about him being the only pitcher aside from Andy Pettitte that could keep the ALDS against the Indians close last October. We all know he has the stuff to be a super effective pitcher and win games….everybody just needs to relax. He will be fine. He has had two bad starts, not to mention a pinched strike zone in both of those games. I can’t wait until the day that Phil gets that no-hitter and shuts all of his critics up!!!!!
First off, ignore the haters, not your best outing, but your velocity seemed good and the strike zone seemed tight, Dice K looked terrible and had a ton of walks. Shake it off, but you certainly don’t need any of us to tell you that.
Second, did you watch the Office yet, they have mastered the make you cringe situation. Hysterical. You must pick up on 30 rock though Phil, I never watched the first season, but picked it up when there were no shows on, watch them online, you will like them.
phil,
is there any way to filter out the idiots from commenting here?
anyway, rough start but i think now that you’ve gotten starting at fenway out of your system you’ll settle down. all you can do is learn from these kind of starts.
89,
don’t you have something better to do with your life?
PLEASE READ.
Phil,
I’m not sure if you actually read these or not, and usually I wouldn’t post; however last night/today is more important than a game of baseball. It appears as though most of the readers on this blog are devout enough to be aware of the goings-on in the Yankee world, and therefore I wish to speak on behalf of the majority. After watching the interview on YES, we learned that Joba makes fun of you for writing this blog, but I would like for you to share with a him a message from all of us. Word has just broken in New York about what has happened to his father, and that Joba has returned home. I just wish for you to express to him from all of us, both the readers and Yankee fans, our deepest sympathies and to let him know that his family is in our prayers. God bless and we hope that for him, and his family, that his father makes a speedy recovery. Thank you for your time.
Tony
89,
don’t you have something better to do with your life?
===============
NO. =)
Hey Phil~
I totally agree with ‘Kyledunne’ and his comments. Again, as I have stated in one of my previous comments…those of you who feel the need to TRY to tell Phil how to pitch..what to work on….or just to be negative…etc…. The “advice givers” do NOT play MLB, and never will. Phil is a YANKEE. “Advice givers” are bitter people who are not successful in their own lives.
AND, by the way……….. Phil pitched 93MPH on Thurs. April 3rd. I KNOW> I SAT RIGHT BEHIND HOME PLATE AND SAW IT ON THE RADAR GUN. (Second ROW….) HA!!!
Phil your amazing, taking your time to do this for us fans is extremely generous. WE LOVE YOU PHIL!
Hey don’t worry about last night the Yankees always get off to a slow start .
Let Joba know we are thinking of his Dad and hope he gets better soon.
Becky
Phil, if you can, please pass along the thoughts and prayers of everyone reading this blog to Joba and his father.
hey 89 your pretty bitter….
did phil **** your mom.. or your girlfriend.. ?? haha…
Phil,
Rough night, but then I think maybe the curse of Big Papi’s shirt buried in the new Stadium must have taken effect. Not only did you guys have 2 tough losses, but the injuries are spreading and now Joba’s father!!
I do hope you pass along to Joba that the Yankee fans are keeping him and his family in our thoughts and prayers. I know he’s got his mind on more important things, but we are all thinking about him and hoping for the best.
As for the wacko 89mph poster – I guess he didn’t see Santana’s game on Saturday, but he looked pretty weak. I’d take Phil over Johan 7 days of the week.
Keep the faith, Phil! we love you!
PS – I’ll be there on Wednesday so the Yanks are sure to win. (Their record is 7 and 1 when I’m at the Stadium!)
Hey Phil no one wins every start…we all believe in ya man. The big difference between you and Dice-K last night was that his walked batters didn’t cross the plate and yours did. KC and Boston have both run on you so far also. Hopefully those SB #s come down. Anyway I’m a big supporter and just want the best for ya. I’ll always cheer and support ya no matter what. You’ll get ’em next time.
Hey Phil,
Huge Yankee fan here, and don’t worry about Sunday. I have faith in you my man! You’re only 21 and you gots lots of years to shut up all the non-believers.
Keep on trucking.
Phil- Don’t listen to the impatient Yankee fans. I think many of them either a. never tried to pitch a baseball game at any level or b. don’t realize that there was a time when the Yanks just weren’t a very good team because our pitching staff consisted of washed up free agent acquisitions like Ed Whitson. There are Yankee fans out there who only know the Bernie Williams era forward, which breeds impatience. You’ve got at least 30 more starts. And Matsusaka struggled too- you guys just aren’t hitting right now.
I travel a lot for work and use a Verizon aircard in my laptop. It does the trick from hotel rooms and is not that expensive each month. But, seriously, can’t the Yanks afford the $10.99 per night Internet access fee? If Lonn Trost can sue some idiot who buried an Ortiz jersey in the foundation of the new stadium he can certainly afford $11 for you to get online and watch some Office Re-runs. That said, it wasn’t that great an episode. We need more Creed and Kevin, and way less Jan.
Give Joba and his family best wishes from us Yankee Fans.
When you talk to Joba, please give him and his family the best of wishes from us fans. Here’s to hoping Mr. Chamberlain gets well very soon.
youre killing my fantasy team phil!
Hi Phil:
I finally got to watch a full ballgame on television last night (I go to school in the city and we don’t have YES), and I was thrilled knowing that you were on the mound. You know better than anyone how it went; but no matter how much things went you kept your composure and I’m pretty inspired by little things like that.
I don’t care about ERA or velocity or anything like that — I know what a great pitcher you are, and from your blog and interviews and such I can tell you’re a great guy too. The numbers will show that soon enough.
So good luck on Friday — and enjoy the weather! Apparently it’s supposed to be sunny and has a high of 72 degrees in Baltimore, so you should be in for your first start in nice weather this season.
(And, like lots of others here, if you could pass along our best wishes and prayers to Joba and Mr. Chamberlain, that’d be great. And, in happier news, offer our congratulations to Alex once his baby girl is born!)
Thanks for everything, Phil — on and off the field.
Everyone has to calm the F down. Obviously last night was frustrating, but who do you think it was more frustrating for, Phil or any of us? The answer is Phil. There is no doubt in my mind that Phil is gonna be filthy. Last night he was sitting comfortably at 92-93 all night with late movement, touching 94 at times. His curve was 72-74 and breaking about 3 feet, freezing guys like pedroia and youkilis. The only problem was control, which has always been Hughes’ biggest strength. Once the command returns, everyone can come off the roof. Lets cut the 2nd youngest player in baseball a little slack. Peace!
your stuff actually looked pretty good last night. the curve was sharp as always and the 2-seamer had alot of life. there were some borderline calls that you weren’t getting but that’s part of the game. just be more aggressive, i know it’s easier said than done but as a great philosophical mind once said, “strikeouts are boring and facist, throw some ground balls, they’re more democratic”- crash davis. don’t worry about being too perfect and maintaining those astronomically high minor league strikeout numbers. keep the ball on the ground, low and over the plate early in the count. it’ll keep the pitch-count down and strikeouts will come. hang in there phil, we’re all behind you.
OK, the outcome of the game was not what we wanted but you will have many more days in the sun. As others have said, hang in there Phil.
Ellsbury was easily out the in the first inning.
gcohen9782,
i wasnt saying that Phil is carrying the team on his back. All that im saying is that if he does good and wins 10-15 games the Yankees will do good. I wasnt saying that Hughes is the only one that can pitch on the yankees. Without Hughes the yankees would win 80 something games but if Hughes does good which i have faith that he will then the Yankees will be in the play-offs
Don’t sweat the knuckle-headed Sox fans that are trolling the blog Phil. Any real Yankee fan knows not to expect miracles. It’s a long season and if we’ve learned anything the last few years its that one fact. Sox fans can make as much noise as they want, we’ll see you and the rest of the team in October.
“Have faith in the Yankees, my son…”
Hang in there.
Tell Joba we’re praying for his Dad.
Good luck in your next start.
Phil,
Next time you are in trouble with Boston, just imagine what Manny’s and Big Pappi’s kid would look like…
Phil, we think you’re wonderful! We know you’re going to have so many amazing starts this season! Forget about yesterday; it’s over. Best of luck! Best wishes to Joba and his dad, too… Our prayers are with them.
Dont listen to these d**che bags who come on here to dis you. These are just growing pains and the true baseball fan knows that. Besides the umps are squeezing the s**t out of you and the D hasnt been great………Also, could you please foward this to Girardi for me. PLEASE KEEP FARNSWORTH OFF THE MOUND. THE PROJECT HAS FAILED!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks. I cant imagine any Yankee fan feeling any different…………………I cry for Joba.
phil dont listen to these stupid bitches
youre a great pitcher and will be back to normal next game
good luck!
Phil, You are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to update us all!
Alright – all you Phil Hughes supporters – sign up for an etopps account:
https://www.etopps.com/Authenticate/login.asp. Then go on over to CardTarget (a place to buy & sell etopps cards other then using ebay), to the Phil Hughes 2007 rookie card: http://www.cardtarget.com/cgi-bin/card_details.cgi?card_id=3004. Then buy up as many as you can! (there were only 1,200 made; they make a certain run # & that’s it. You can either hold all of your cards in your etopps account (and watch the price like a stock), or you can have the actual card shipped to you by Topps (slabbed & seaded in a holder) if you choose (taking it out of your Portfolio & out of circulation so to speak)- Yes, I own 75 of these myself – but I’m a true die hard Yankee fan…
Phil,
Tough break out there against the Red Sox. That ump was pinching you big time. But I’m trying to figure out why you didn’t throw your bread and butter pitch — the meatball? You never have an issue getting that one over the plate when you need it most.
Look at the bright side… you’re certainly not the first young pitcher to wet his pants in a big game. The important thing you really can’t suck any worse next time the chimp hands you the ball.
Another thing to be happy about is the flock of ball-washers you’ve got drooling in anticipation of an acknowledgement from you. You may not have command of a fastball but you’ve got these drones under your spell.
Phil- dont worry about all these anti yankee people on here. 2 bad starts dont equal a bad career, but im sure you know that. good luck in baltimore thursday.
Also, best wishes to the Chamberlain family our prayers are with them.
Phil,
Phil, I know you are taking the last couple of games hard and it is difficult to live with not being your best when you are giving it everything you have. I am a decent golfer, a low handicap golfer, and I learn from my mistakes, and improve on them everytime. You should be doing the same with your mistakes. Learn from them and correct them. I know you are trying to hit the corners and are just missing, maybe you are not trusting your stuff enough. You have everything it takes to make a great pitcher, now go out there and be positive and trust your stuff.
Thanks for the great site. It is too bad that we have to put up with a couple of knuckleheads, but that its the way it is when you open a forum such as this. Ignore them, and maybe they will go away.
Sorry about the loss last night. 😦
Phil,
You are a BEAST, do you remeber when Jorge in 2006 said ” [Phil] has the best arm in camp, no doubt.” That same year pitchers, Randy Johnson and Mariano Rivera were there, two sure hall of famers. Use this confidence and go fricken own the Orioles. Everyone goes through growing pains, obviously Hughes89 is going through his period.
Sincerely, FH
P.S, send Joba and his family best wishes
So sorry about the loss last night. But it really was NOT your fault. Your team just wasn’t helping you both defensively and offensively! Well better luck next time Phil. YOU ROCK!!!
Hope ya guys win tonight against the RAYS!!! Pray for Joba for me. I feel so sorry for him and his family.
Phil is the best!! So are melky and robbie !!
Phil, please pass my prayers and wishes to Joba and his family. Let him know his fans are thinking of him at this difficult time.
Phil,
As a Sox fan, I’d just like to let you know that you did look good out there on the mound yesterday. Last year, Dustin Pedroia had the second-fewest strikeouts in the AL, and you got him pretty quickly yesterday. I also just want to say that you’re one of the Yankees I do like–high praise from a Sox fan!
Good luck in your next starts, so long as they aren’t against Boston,
-Liza
PS – Give my best wishes to Joba if you get a chance to speak to him. Let him and his family know we’re hoping everything turns out well. And for an idea, I’ve seen that lots of other people have left comments about Joba; maybe you could print out the relevant comments and give them to him (this is an idea taken from Curt Schilling’s blog, where he told people to leave comments for Mike Lowell after being re-signed this offseason)…
Hey again, Phil- just wanted to say basically what everyone else is saying at the moment. Give Joba my best and tell him we all appreciate him and hope everything’s going well. Same goes for his dad and sister and anyone else close. They’re all really great people.
-Maddie
Good luck in all of your starts not against the Mets! I also send my thoughts and prayers to Joba and his family. I hope there are only good things to come
hey phil,
Don’t you love how people who know absolutely nothing about baseball try to teach you how to pitch? lol unbelievable…My roommate(bilamos30) and I have complete confidence in you and know its only a matter of time until these trolls eat their words! We were at the game last night right behind homeplate and your pitches looked nasty. Good luck at Baltimore and send Joba our best!
yo homes,
don’t worry about it, you’ll be fine. its early and was very cold last night. i was at the game last night about 40 rows up behind home plate and your stuff looked filthy. don’t listen to these losers criticizing you; they’re just no talent @$$clowns with nothing better to do with their pathetic lives. these are the same type of d-bags who booed johan santana the other night. your VELOCITY WAS PERFECTLY FINE ACCORDING TO THE FENWAY GUN, AND WAS ON PAR WITH MATSUZAKA’S THE ENTIRE NIGHT.
in conclusion,
-people who criticize those who are better than them are phuck-tards
-people who try to teach those who are better than them are phuck-tards
keep your head up buddy, you’ll be fine… every pitcher will have starts like that. keep working hard and the goods will follow. good luck phil!
to all you haters — eat $hit, bums
Too all the A**hole Redsux fans. Your here busting on Phil? Give me a F’ing break . The Sux paid 100 million for Douche K and he gives up 5 runs a game to the Yanks. That was a steal huh. To show more of your stupidity. You guys argue that Ortiz who sits on his fat a** 98% of all baseball games should be an MVP. Does he even know which hand his glove goes on?
Philllyyy,
I actually watched The Office! It was really funny, and I saw a few facebook bumper stickers about it already. I’ve seen all the British episodes but only a couple of the American ones.
And I’m thinking bout Joba :[
Also I was bummed to find out that you were away last weekend
Also I was bummed to find out that you were away last weekend and this weekend and my entire spring break cause I really wanna go to a game soon. I might see you guys in Chicago though April 22 cause I was caller ten on ESPN Radio to win a chance to win the trip, so I donno if I actually won it yet.***
WOW, IAN KENNEDY LOOKED PRETTY GOOD OUT THERE TODAY. PHIL COULD LEARN A THING OR TWO FROM KENNEDY. WENT OUT THERE, ATTACKED THE HITTERS, GOT AHEAD, AND DID HIS THING.
HE DIDN’T SHIT HIMSELF ON THE MOUND LIKE HUGHES HAS BEEN DOING HIS LAST 2 STARTS!
WAY TO KILL THE BULLPEN HUGHES! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, REMEMBER IT’S A LEARNING PROCESS AND WE LOVE YOU… HAHAHAHA, DWEEBS.
Phil –
I love your presence on the mound and that you connect with the fans this way…there is a reason you’re still here and they didn’t trade for Johan. I look forward to your start in Baltimore!!!
My prayers and good wishes are also with Joba’s family.
GoodLuck
dear phil please tell joba that my family will keep his father in our prayers and to please hang in there everything will turn out ok best of luck on your next start thanks Ed
As neither a fan of the Red Sox or Yankees (I live in the midwest) but interested in your career Phil….I cannot believe the knuckleheads that have gotten on here and torched you. Keep working hard and thank you for letting us all into your life on this forum. It has been a pleasure to follow your career.
Please also let Joba know we are all thinking of him. I went through the same thing 3 years ago so I totally understand.
Thank you again, Phil…..it will get better
Hey Phil, shake off the rough outings. It happens. It ain’t how you pitch in April, it’s how you pitch in July, August, and so on. Remember, Mantle got sent back to the minors. Look at Pedroia last year, he didn’t hit for months and ended up winning rookie of the year. Nobody with your stuff, work ethic, and attitude can fail.
Please, add my best wishes for Joba and mr. Chamberlain.
Good luck in your next start.
hey 89,
when’s your next start?
Yankee fans who freak out in April when the team is playing under lousy conditions, traveling at odd hours after a night game and getting umps who have the strike zone all over the place are NOT true fans.
We knew, when we campaigned against the Johan trade, that the kids were going to struggle some this season. Ian looked AWESOME last night, as we knew he would. Phil has some nasty nasty pitches and will be fine. Joba is at home with dad and we send him much love and many thoughts.
Joba’s situation puts the spotlight on how little a game really means. If anyone is putting all their emotions and energy into baseball to the point of wringing their hands in APRIL, well that is just wrong.
The weather will warm up, the kids will be fine, hopefully Harlan is on the mend, and the bats will heat up. From 1-25 this Yankee team should be dominant. And they will be.
True fans live and die with the team.
Sending good thoughts your way Phil. Please tell Ian to take care of his bruise and send Joba my thoughts and concerns. We’re all pulling for Harlan.
Hey Phil–
Those of us who pay attention have every confidence in the world in the Yankee rotation. I’m not going to say your last outing was pretty, but every ML pitcher has those games.
Please send our love and prayers to Joba and Harlan Chamberlin, they are both in the hearts and prayers of Yankee fans and anyone with a parent.
Better luck in the next outing!
Phil….you are going to get better every time you toe the rubber, friend. You do have the stuff to be on the Yankee staff for many years to come. They would NEVER have wanted to trade Santana for you, up there in MinnyLand ( where my sister lives ) if they didnt’ see the talent and potential in you that New York and I am sure every other MLB teams sees as well. We are behind you, pal. Now go out there and knock ’em dead. P.S. If you can find a way to plug manny in the ribs with a fast ball for all those times that he “posed” after hitting a dinger against the Yankees over the year, just be sure to do it when you are up be about 5 runs ! 😉
Hey all fans:
I am using Phil’s site for this message because I know he is close to Joba. Joba and Phil have brought so much excitement to NY Yankee fans, that we need to pay back a bit.
If you are all like me, I believe in the power of prayer. I know Joba does, because I see him pray before every outing.
I am asking every Yankee Fan at noon time today EST. and every day until Mr. Chamberlain is better to stop for a few seconds and say a quick prayer for Harlin and the Chamberlain Family.
If we all do it together the man upstairs will have to listen!!
Cliff
Phil tough start in Fenway, but you’ll learn something from it and get stronger from it. The weather didn’t help either. Make the Orioles pay the price this weekend.
If and when you speak to Joba please pass along that his family is in our prayers and our wishes for Mr. Chamberlain’s speedy and complete recovery.
Phil, Shake off the sox, there will be a bigger and better opportunities to ruin their season!!
Phil,
Rough outing Sunday, but hey, don’t worry about it. Look at it this way, how many 21 year olds get to say they got roughed up by the Boston Red Sox? Honest to God, I wish I could say that. It’s better than doing statics homework.
Do me and everybody else a favor though, and give the Chamberlain family mine and everybody else’s regards. They’ve gone through so much, and Yankees Universe is pulling for Mr. Chamberlain.
89mph, back under the bridge, troll. It also helped that Kennedy was pitching last night in a 72 degree dome. I’m guessing you’ve never tried pitching, or else you’d know how difficult it is to locate your pitches in 30 degree weather. Kennedy knows, he tried pitching in that kind of weather in KC and got rocked, walking the ballpark in the process.
Hey Phil, give Joba and the Chamberlain family our regards and let him know our prayer’s are with his family and Mr. Chamberlain.
maybe you should try watching The Office at all costs before your starts that way you won’t be thinking about Michael Scott on the mound, and you can throw more strikes…
Phil – Invest in an aircard from Verizon… http://search.vzw.com/?market=05065&q=aircard
Phail, don’t listen to the minority of these idiots, you pitched great you had 5 K’s in the first inning, the ump was squeezing the hell out of you and we all saw it, theres still 17 or so games against the Red Sox left, you’ll get them back for this one keep your head up.
I’m a Red Sox fan and I can’t believe some of the comments I’m reading. Its disgrace. Some people have suggestions for Phil like he doesn’t know how to pitch. Give the guy a break. He is 21 years old. Phil is gracious enough to have this blog so people can learn about him and different things and some of you feel the need to come and trash him? Somebody had a nerve to say that they should have traded Hughes for Santana. Have you seen how Santana pitched lately? Did you know that he gave up 3 homeruns in one game? Give Phil a chance and he is going to prove you wrong.
Phil, don’t listen to the haters on here. So you had a couple rough ones, funny how some people forget so quickly how great you did last season, almost pitching the no hitter, and in the post season. The people who judge are not your fans, it takes a lot of balls to go out there and do what you do and Yankee Stadium is a very intimidating place. I know you will be fine and end up being a great pitcher for us for a very long time. These asshats being rude to you probably don’t even know how many innings are in a game let alone what it takes to be a pitcher (for the Yankees, at that). Keep up the good work, don’t get down on yourself, there are a ton of us out here in Yankee land who have TONS of faith in you. Good Luck!
Oh yeah and I have to agree with Becca up there, LOL @ traded for Santana. Phil has the ability to be BETTER than Santana and the Yankee brass did the right thing holding onto him. The days of selling off the farm for an older pitcher with a couple yrs left in his prime are gone, THANK GOD. WE LOVE YOU PHIL!
hey phil, the office ep was sooo good, especially if you love the awkwardness the office has sometimes.
and don’t worry about the rough starts. we’re all still keepin the faith. go get em next start and work from there.
ps, i’m trying to trade for you in my fantasy baseball league, so you know I believe in ya, haha. go win some for me once i get you, hahahaha
torrents phil use torrents to download office episodes
Phil,
Your stuff looked as sharp as it has ever been the other night in Fenway.
That curve Manny hit was nasty and in a perfect location…Manny is just really damn good. I garuntee you throw that in the same situation 99% of the time it will be an out.
Fastball velocity looked good and seemed to have some “late life”. Gameday’s pitchfx showed that ball moving well for the velocity which you were throwing it with (93ish).
Curve had some great late break…looked awesome.
I thought your control wasn’t bad either. I found myself yelling at the tv all night “WHERE DID THAT MISS?!?!?”. I know you’ll never admit it but you were getting SQUEEZED.
With warmer weather and more innings I’m sure the rest of your secondary pitches will come along nicely.
In conclusion, though the result wasn’t what I’m sure you were hoping for, you definitely showed some positive signs. I HIGHLY look forward to your next start…
PS. Do you have anyone who moderates the crap some people post here? You shouldn’t have to deal with censoring the morons…
Hey Phil,:)
Your friend Ian Kennedy did really well last night. your probably happy about the win. Well have a nice day!!!!!!! By the way, someone should do something about some of the mean things peopel say on here..
Hey Phil,:)
Your friend Ian Kennedy did really well last night. your probably happy about the win. Well have a nice day!!!!!!! By the way, someone should do something about some of the mean things people say on here..
Whats up? 😛
PHIL YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!
Hey Phil hows the warm weather in Tampa treating you!?
Hi Phil, I know I already commented here today but wanted to send you good vibes again. You have nasty stuff and will be GREAT. Ian looked GREAT and I’m sorry he did not get the WIN. He deserved it. And my thoughts and prayers are with Joba.
This will be known as a challenging time in Yankee history but the most storied franchise in the history of sports will get through.
Red Sox fan: you are too cool (I can’t believe I’m saying that but it’s TRUE!!). Thanks for your support of Phil!
Phil: sending good thoughts your way.
GO YANKEES!
~ Beth
I was filling in some holes in the ground today and like that guy from the Bronx did, I threw an Ortiz jersey in one of the holes, but before i buried it, i pissed in the hole……The funny part was it smelled like Fenway.
I wish Phil would get someone to scream the blog and delete the idiotic comments. This blog shouldn’t be ruined by some stupid 12 year old kids getting off on making stupid statements.
Oops screen!
Yeah, Me too
good to see yall are playing so well…we all knew it was going to happen. I think you pitch Friday, maybe, so good luck with that….we’re rooting all the way for you Phil 🙂
If you could, let Joba know we are continually praying for his dad’s health.
Phil!
Suggested random picture of the day – the hat stretcher. 😆
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/04/15/the-tale-of-the-hat-stretcher/#comments
Hey Phil, word on the street is you have a giant head.
hiiiiiiiiiiiii phillllllllllllllll
this big head story is really getting around
post something about that magic hat stretcher?
mb a picture?
hmm?
have a good one.
Hey Phil, let me be the first to welcome you to the big head club. The only real benefit of being in the club is that you can stretch out your friends flex-fit hats (it never gets old though, always funny).
There sure are a lot of freaks out there!
You win some and you lose some. Everyone has a bad day now and again. Cut the guy some slack.
The day you all try to pitch in a major league baseball game is the day you have room to insult Phil Hughes.
Hey phil, shake off your last start. It’s ok you win some you lose some just bounce back and in your next start do amazing!!! =]
And our thoughts and prayers are with Joba and his father. I hope you get better Harlan!
I have no patience when the team buys talent that doesn’t perfom, and it seems that is their luck lately.
I would rather watch new, young guys with talent (who might struggle a bit)
than all-stars who are less than stellar.
The Office rules and so does 30 Rock!
phil your next blog must be about the hat stretcher
You know what they say about guys with big heads…. big brain!
Phil,
Screw these mean fans. You guys are being like Met fans. I went to Shea last night and Milledge and LoDuca were booed. What did they do wrong. Listen Phil, you and Generation Trey are unbelivable. One bad start does nothing. Obviously every pitcher will be intimidated in their first start. DW about it we love you anyway. And tell Joba its Passover, any one gets cured.
Lets Go Yankees,
David
ha, i like the mets fan analogy
we (by which i mean some) were doing the same think to hawkins
poor guys
at least their millionaires
eh?
bears, beets, and battlestar galactica. the office is such a great stress reliever, have a great season phil!
Phil –
Best of luck Friday vs the O’s!
A weird question – I know that your dad was a Sox fan, and that Clay Bucholtz grew up a Yankee fan. Have you guys ever discussed this? It’s pretty darn funny.
There’s excellent news that Harlan Chamberlain has improved:
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080416&content_id=2534241&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy
Just want to join everyone else in wishing the Chamberlain family all the best during this very difficult time. This kind of thing makes baseball seem pretty insignificant.
Good game last night even though CMW didn’t seem to have it but he was picked up by the bullpen and the bats. These Yankee / Red Sox games go on for days!!!
GREAT news on Harlan!!!! We’re all pulling for him.
Hope all is well Phil!!!! Watch The Office!
~ Beth
Phil… Got my Baseball America issue yesterday and Peter Gammons selected you as a sleeper for the Cy Young Award…
Phil, I am gonna be at your game tomorrow night, so it will be the perfect time for you to turn things around
hang in there buddy everyone has a few rough starts in a row, look at CC his season era is 13+

Hey Phil-
Good luck tomorrow night in Baltimore! I’ll be at The Yard cheering you on! Nice to know that the bats finally woke up, so you’ll have some decent run support. Anyway, good luck again!!!
-Kara
did hawkins change his number to 22? i missed part of the game and i saw the highlight and it looked like him in number 22.
yeah he did because of all the boos
abraham describes it well
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/04/16/shameful-end-to-the-21-saga/
How does Phil get such a clean shave?
We know you’re busy, Phil. Just happy that you’re trying to keep us updated with what’s going on. Hope things are going well on the road….
Phil,
I think everyone’s comments here about you, Ian, and Joba demonstrate that we like you guys not just for your talent but for your maturity and your positive attitudes toward the game and life in general. I am excited for every single start you, Ian and CMW make because I always believe you guys have the stuff to be amazing out there (of course, this is also the case when Joba comes out of the pen.) I also love that you guys are smiling and laughing and not taking yourselves to seriously (at least, that we know about!).
Please don’t let uneducated idiots make you jaded. Just think of them as the losers sitting in their mom’s basement that they really are.
BEAT THE RED SOX TONIGHT,GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Jeana .M.
I’M READY FOR THE 89MPH HEAT TOMORROW NIGHT!!
Well, I didn’t wish you luck last time.. and again, you still don’t need it…. but it makes me feel better to wish it to you anyway.
So good luck tomorrow Phil. You= awesome no matter what anybody else says
Much Love
Alex
89 MPH,
I’m gonna track you down, chop your head off, and eat your parents.
I love all these people who come on here to make the most inflammatory statements possible, looking for some kind of reaction.
First of all, ERA doesn’t mean anything this early in the season. It’s affected dramatically by each inning. But if you want to look at ERA, do you know what Santana’s was when he was 21?
6.49!!!!!!
SIX .49!!!!
FOR THE SEASON!!!
Anyway, Phil looked much better tonight. His command, while not as good as it can be (and will be), continues to improve, and he kept the team in the game.
After the game, Girardi agreed that Phil was better and did a good job keeping his composure and making his pitches…and his opinion is the only one that matters.
Nothing like having “the next Roger Clemens” crap all over your season once every five days!
Phil, perhaps you should give up these side jobs (there is NO QUESTION you are only doing this for a check) and focus on your REAL job for a change!
And a piece of advice: Invest in some earplugs before your next start at the Stadium!
I cannot believe the Yankees opted to keep THIS guy when they had a chance to deal him for Santana.
Phil,
Saw a lot of improvement tonight, fastball and slider looked very good, curve seemed to be a little off. I’m confused because in the Boston game you seemed to have a good 12-6 working, but tonight it seemed to be moving down and in to lefties, almost like 2-7. And where’s that changeup? Anyway I’m not a coach or anything, this is just one fan’s opinion.
Greg
http://slidingintohome.net
& how is this loss phil’s fault?
If its anyones fault its the offense
Maybe if the offense could put up some digits past 2 on the board more often, our pitchers wouldnt be in the position that they’re in.
& besides you guys act like Phil did horrible, he pitched 5 good innings.
Best of luck this season Phil dont listen the ignorance.
hahahaha i just read melkyway28s comment, 4 comments up… way to be.
HAHAHA…. GOOD GOING LAST NIGHT HUGHES!! THIS GUY IS TURNING OUT TO BE ONE OF THE MONUMENTAL BUSTS OF ALL TIME!
Phil… Got my Baseball America issue yesterday and Peter Gammons selected you as a sleeper for the Cy Young Award…
=====================
AAAAAAHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!
BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
OMG, THAT IS CLASSIC! THE CY YOUNG AWARD FOR THIS GUY? LMAO!!!!!
You pitched a lot better than your line will show. You were one misplayed ball away from a 6IP 2ER start.
You created this blog to get away from baseball talk but all that’s all that the comments here refer to (I’m guilty of it…in this very post heh)…

How’s Shelley handling the demotion to AAA (beside him absolutely tearing it up with a ~1.400 OPS)? Have you talked to him recently? This team needs more arm bashes…
Phil, you’re killing my fantasy baseball team.
Please, please, start doing better.
Sorry about the loss last night. But you rock though Phil!! 🙂 In fact, you did pretty well!! Well good luck to your teammates tonight against the Orioles.:)
-Jeana :]
Phil you are the best along with the other 2 amigos Joba and Ian. I love watching you!
With love,
-jeana
Keep your chin up, Phil. Anyone who has seen you pitch over the years knows how good you will be.
It takes some time to settle in. You have a ton of pressure right now. Good luck Phil.
Also, for a laugh check out matsuifan.com
That was a bit hostile!
Hey Everyone Check out this Yankee blog it’s great!

Is this Ben McDonald’s blog?
Hey Phil,
I’ll be at the game on Thursday in Chicago… Looking forward to seeing you pitch.
You’re gonna break out real soon, I can feel it! You were close in Baltimore.
Hey Phil,
Don’t get down too much. Obviously nobody expected you to dominate the league this year. The last start wasn’t that bad, it just looked worse in the box score. You and Ian are going through the same problems, too many pitches. I can’t imagine what it is like to have to face a line-up like Boston or some other teams but I might want to avoid throwing pitches over the plate too. I still believe you have great stuff and you should go out there and show those other teams why the Yankees gave you a spot in the rotation. You are THAT good. But if you are throwing 60 pitches in the first 3 frames, you really aren’t helping yourself or the team.
Hey Phil, I’m sorry I haven’t checked the blog in a while…you probably know that up here in Canada NHL playoffs=LIFE (I hope you aren’t a blue-shirt fan, as that would utterly disappoint me). But I see you had a rough outing last time out. When I used to have rough outings on the ice or on the mound, I’d usually sit in the woods behind my house and talk to this moose that always roamed around my house, I named him Jean-Francois. When we talked, he would bring peace to my mind and drain my mind of all the frustrations from my previous outings. I would talk to him for hours while we enjoyed some maple syrup from the greatest maple trees in all of Ontario. Jean-Francois would always clear my mind for the next time I would have to take the ice or the mound. Obviously, you don’t have a moose that travels with the team, so think of something to do to clear your head Phil, and go out next time and kick some butt! Stick in there Phil and Good Luck!!!
Best Wishes,
Canada Day & Jean-Francois
hang in there phil, you are gonna make it fine in the next start
Hey albanyyankeefan, do you go to SUNY Albany by any chance? I’m from Albany also.
what can i say about mr. 89mphfastball… we can say that besides of being a huge ignorant!! which doesn’t realize this is a blog for positive comments not for absurds and stupid comments…
You’re all so angry at 89mphfastball… you do realize by responding to him, you’re feeding right into it, don’t you?
Anyway, there seems to be a lack of balance here between Yankee fans who worship the ground Hughes walks on and general baseball fans who look at each player as just that: a player. Phil has dynamite stuff, but you can’t expect him to win 18 games his first year. Would it be cool (for Yankee fans)? Hell yes. Is it realistic to expect that from a rookie? No. I’m a Red Sox fan, and I still wish Phil luck this season. I mean, come on… you Yankee fans need ONE dominant pitcher this year, you know?
Go Sox.
Phil,
As I have said in previous posts, our pitching is amazing. And yes that includes you. But, our hitting needs a lot of work. And yes a lot has to do with one another. Comunication between pitching and hitting is key. So go ahead (no fear) and talk to them see if theres something wrong if they dont hit this series in Chi. And btw POST were not mad at you. Oh and I told you, Its passover everyone gets better (go visit Harlan C.).
Lets Go Yankees
David
I’m gonna bet that your going to start making posts again once you start pitching better. Go Yanks!! I have faith that you will find your locations and be able to use that sick deuce to be successful this year for the yanks…
Hey Phil~
Best of luck on Thurs. You will be fine…..Stay focused and don’t listen or read the stupid bulls*&t the losers write on here.
~Rebecca
Phil where did you go man? Keep you head up. You will turn it around before you know it…GO YANKS!!!
Hey Phil~
Best of luck on Thursday!
~Rebecca
We all love you Phil. DW
Phil,
Keep the faith, we are counting on you for the long haul. You were drafted and kept as a prize chip by the best team in baseball for a reason.
Give your best, throw strikes, you have a darn good defense behind you.
God Bless,
Has Philly stopped posting because of all the travel… or his pitching woes…?
u r one of the greatest young pitchers i ever saw u came out last year ur 1st or second outing and went 7 innings with a no hitter until u got hurt thats just amazing one day i would love to c u have a full game no hitter
Okay, so thanks to you, I now am an official blogger, so thank you.
Secondly – your personality seems awesome – it’s great that you have a blog that’s dedicated to you, and not you in baseball. I’ve always wondered what kind of guys you boys are, and you bring personality to just the jersey with a number.
No matter how your successes are on the field – you’re a yankee – you’ve made it thus far – i’m 22… I can totally understand entirely the pressures of failure – and how miraculious it is, that you are the youngest pitcher in the MLB and how awesome it is to know about the real down to earth stuff that happens in your day-to-day life, reguardless being famous or not.
I wish you all the luck in the world, and I hope to see you pitch this season in the Bronx in person – i’ll be making it to alot more games this season so, it’s probable. But-I love your energy, and I wish you all the best.
You seem awesome, if you can reply, if you have a spare minute, that would be awesome. New York City is great, if you can experience it during the season, it’s a great city, so I hope you have the opportunity to go out and explore the city as much as you can while you’re in NY. Enjoy playing – and you know we’re rooting for you. We haven’t given up. We wont.

Hey Phil,
I was just curious about something I heard on the Chicago sports radio today. As you know Girardi is a Chicago guy but they were talking about him and the rule he has about no candy or gum in the clubhouse. Seriously is that true? Candy I can almost understand but GUM? come on. Gum at a baseball game being chewed by players is a part of the game. I was just curious if this was true or it was being made up by a few guys who dont like Joe.
Good luck tomorrow!
Kevin
Good night for Mooooose!
I hope that the bats are alive again for Phil’s start tomorrow.
Keep Your head up… We all still got your Back and know your gona turn it around.
I’m making a 4 hour trip to see you tomorrow in Chicago Phil…best of luck in finishing off the sweep
Good Luck tonight Phil you and Ian are going to be great !
Phil,
Sweep, and were living the dream. One thing we can’t do is let Boston get away. I will see you at the Stadium this Detroit series, I’ll be there. Lovin how were starting to hit. Oh and if I have to eat one more damn piece of Matzah I’ll probably kill myself. It has no taste. Everyday, Matzah cream cheese in the morning, matzah pizza for lunch, then plain Shmura with Meneshewitz wine. Oh and I actually did used to call Doug Mancavitz, Doug Meneshiwitz – not so funny.
Lets Go Yankees
David
Good luck tonight Phil!
Good luck tonight, Phil. Remember: STRIKE ONE!
Have a good time pitching tonight!

We believe in you Phil. Good luck tonight. Trust your stuff. We know you’ll do great.
Good Luck Tonight Phil
Phil: hope you are okay buddy!!! You’re making adjustments and I trust you will be smoking them. If you ever want a “guest blogger” when you’re on the road, let us die-hard Yankee fans know. I’m sure there are a few of us who could come up with great guest columns.
Take care!
Phil, do I watch you pitch tonight, or watch The Office??
Good luck tonight…I cant watch I have to work but i will be tracking it on the computer
Rita
Phil, if you don’t have it again.. Please pitch like someone else. It worked great for Moose last night. haha. Good luck.
Good luck on the Southside tonight P.
Take care tonight sweet cheeks!
…always wanted to call someone sweet cheeks haha
Lata,
Alex
Good luck tonight against the White-Sox. I have this feeling you will be great!!!!!!!!! Well have a nice day!!!! 🙂
-Jeana:)
Good luck tonight Phil!
Tough break with the rain. Two solid innings. It was probably safer to not risk going back out there, though. Just keep the momentum for next start.
Phil, sucks you could only pitch 2 innings tonight with the rain. It’s good Girardi didn’t put you back out there though, when he was managing the Marlins he did that with Josh Johnson on a 82 min rain delay and had to get TJ surgery and many believe it was because of that. Anyways, atleast you’ll be better rested for your next start.
http://blogginthebombers.wordpress.com/
You got to pitch only two innings, but you did good. It’s a shame you weren’t able to continue. Looking foward to your next start. Kepp it going..
Kevin
Great job last night Phil, you looked great in your last outing even though you got the loss, and you came back again with first pitch strikes this outing, no matter what anyone says im still glad you’re a yankee 🙂
Just found out your pitching the 29th against the Tigers, which I have tickets too! Can’t wait, good luck.
dear phil saw the game on tuesday just hang in there everything will work just stay calm best of luck Ed
Just keep on attacking hitters and trust your stuff. You’re on the right track just keep your head up and it will happen.
Hope you heal well Phil.
Maybe you want to switch Back to 65.. thats a great number 🙂
hey phil, hope you can get back from the injury man, it’s so sad :S. Good luck man
Hey Phil
Thanks for the water bottle and ball you gave me in Cleveland. Hope to see you back on the mound soon.
Hey Mr. Hughes just wondering if you are going to travel with the team because I’m going to Toronto next week to see your team and I really would like to receive an autograph. Thank you for your time. Good Luck the rest of the season
Hi Mr Hughes I’m a 14 year old guy entering high school at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange,NJ. I am a pitcher and I play for the NJ X-Factors which is a travel baseball team out of Dumont. I throw long toss and run on a treadmill three times a week. Just wondering since you are a major league pitcher if this is the correct workout to be able to compete at the higher level. Thank you for your time.
