Well that was one of the more enjoyable Super Bowls I can remember. The Giants defense really shined, and that catch by Tyree in the 4th quarter had my house shaking. Everyone had a good time and the food was a hit. Thanks for all the great ideas.
Edit 3:12 PM: I forgot to mention that I talked with Sean Henn today about taking his number. He agreed, but nothing is official yet.
Just imagine what it would feel like to win the World Series at Yankee Stadium, huh?
Now that football is over, I’m ready for baseball to start so we can bring another championship back to New York. Phil, I’m going to be at spring training – how do I get an autograph? All the best for a great season.
Phil,
Get us some pics of you throwing a BP.
I’ll see if I can get someone to take a couple pictures during my next session.
Are you a Giants fan, Phil? Or were you just rooting for them for the SB?
EIGHTEEN AND ONE!
18-1!
18-1!
18-1!!
what a great game!
p.s. phil you should update your About Me page
Did you figure out what number you chose yet?
Also, have you had a chance to meet/get to chat with Joe Girardi yet?
any pics, please post atleast one pic
hey, Phil. I think if there was one suggestion I would have or think would be cool for the site would be some pics from throwing and workout sessions at the Stadium, but also some candid shots, in the clubhouse, or off the field (like some shots of you and some of the teammates out on the town, or even from the SB party).
who crashed over for the SB? teammates, family, or just friends from home?
i’d also just like to say pay close attention to the parade down the canyon of heroes tomorrow, and then multiply the experience you see by 10, and I’ll guess thats what i think #27 could be like for you guys… all that can be yours, and it’s within the team’s grasp, if you guys keep hungry… we’re rooting for you!
Thanks dude.
Hey Phil….any chance you could help make someone’s day at spring training? Could you spare a used glove, cleat, sock, shoelace, anything at all. I’ll be there the 14th-16th. Be a hero Phil….please!
Hey Phil …
The majestic website is selling your jersey with #34…is that the new number?
Go Yankees 2008 !!!!
Henn was wearing 34 I think. That’ll be a decent number. I still think you should go after 11. Super Bowl was great, was a good watch and surprised the crap outta me. As some one said up above me, pictures of you and just whats going on around there right now would be awesome.
Well …it might be official and you don’t know about it because majestic is selling all the Jerseys with #34. I like that ….3 & 4 = 7….my fav ….The Mick. Why #34 ??? Any special reason ??
Personally I still liked 19 ….I loved Righetti and thought you would have looked cool using that number.
Go Yankees 2008 !!!!
so if you are swapping numbers with Sean Henn, what did you have to give to him to get it?
These are some of my favorite stories… I heard that in order to get his number from Jeff Feagles at the time he was drafted, Eli agreed to pay for Feagles to go to Spring Break down in Florida for a week… some other swaps I’ve heard deal with nice watches, too.
Phil Hughes wearing #34. WOW!
Hey Phil, I dunno if you are familliar with that artist who was featured in beckett that does artwork and litho’s the size of cards, but I got his 1/1 art card he drew of you.
Is it something you’d like personally or would you be willing to sign it for me if I sent it to you if you do not want it for yourself?
I have a yahoo.com e-mail and it is this username with underscores between river wolf 2005 (Add the underscores where the spaces are.)
I offered to buy him dinner at Flemming’s
i posted earlier on the “number change” post that majestic was selling it with number 34.. i guess they found out something before.. id liek to know why 34 it actually is my fav number i used to wear???
Also, did you use any of the recipes we gave you for the party?
not bad, you got off pretty easy.
3+4=7, my Mom’s favorite number, and 34 was the number of my favorite pitcher growing up, Nolan Ryan
Thats cool. 34 is a very popular number in sports good number hope it works out that you get it so we can get our jerseys asap i already have tickets too the second game of the year april 2 hope your pitching but prob be wang or andy but hope too see you during warm ups!!!
Hi, Phil.
I concur with the folks who’d love to see photos from the bullpen sessions you guys are throwing. Also, if you have time, I’d love to see a rundown of the kind of stuff you do in a workout day. What do you start with? What stuff do you do leading up to throwing? What do they have you working on when you’re on the mound? Particular pitches? Particular pitch sequences? Is Jorge catching you guys yet, or is he just working out and taking BP?
Thanks for giving the fans this awesome opportunity to get an inside look at major league ball!
And didn’t you wear it at the Futures game?
Nolan Ryan sure gave it to Ventura. He was a gamer.
http://respectjetersgangster.blogspot.com
I’d love to see pictures from the SB bash :o) …Congrats on the new number …good choice but it will take a little time to get use to instead of 65. I don’t think we will mistake you for Sean Henn …pitching wise ..lol.
Go Yankees 2008 !!!
34 is a great choice! Though, I thought I’d read that you had a thing for fives?
Anyway, that was a GREAT Super Bowl. Probably the best one I remember watching, at least since the fourth quarter of that Rams/Titans one (before that I wasn’t allowed to stay up!)
Phil:
good choice. just happy to hear you are not going with #45, the jersey Pavano cursed for all time.
Agree it was a great game last night, do you have any friends of the young players on the Giants squad?
http://bronx-bomberz.blogspot.com/
im glad u had a good time for ur super bowl party. ..thats kewl about henn .more the merry.
34 is a good choice. Henn needs a lefty number. Lefties look better with higher numbers (Johnson, Pettitte , etc.)
Great game last night!
Being here in Manhattan, it was crazy. People were all out in the street celebrating after the game. Doing it against Bill Belicheck and the Patriots made it that much sweeter.
Hopefully we can do this all again in October!
Hey Phil,
I will be making the trip from NC to see a spring game on March 27th. I will have my 12 year old niece and nephew with me. It will actually be my nephew’s birthday. I would love for him to get some autographs while down there. What is the best way for fans to get autographs at Legends Field? I have been a few times myself so I’m familiar with the layout of the fields. We would all love to get your autograph. Any advise would be very appreciated.
Have a great year!!
Marc
Flemings, huh? http://www.flemingssteakhouse.com/valentines%5Fday/
Phil I can get you some really good pics of yourself…let me know
Phil,
It was a great game!!! I am exhausted today I live 15 minutes from Giants Stadium! There were horns blowing people screaming alot fun and craziness. The Giant franchise is like the Yankee franchise a very historic and long winning tradition! In regards to number change I love the logic “7” is my favorite number too. It’s my birthday……
It was a very amazing game, How Eli got away from those guys trying tog et him down and then having the presence to throw it to Tyree was amazing, the catch was spectacular, very well deserved, just wish Bellichick wasn’t such a sore loser.
Phil, did you completely get rid of your website and forum??? It’s cool if you did, hopefully the blog does even better. Can’t wait till March 31.
Mr. Hughes:
So what exactly did you serve at the Super Bowl bash? Just curious as to which of the food ideas made it to the table.
Best of luck with the new number. Of course now my dad’s SWB Yankee #65 jersey becomes an even bigger collector’s item!
🙂
I like the look of 34 for a pitcher, if i remember correctly, thats the number you wore in the futures game as well. Can’t wait til the season starts.
Good Luck Phil.
Steve.
I agree Phil, amazin win for the Giants. I was talking to some of my friends who are Yankees fans about it, and we were all saying hopefully the Yankees all watched it. I mean…man. Wow. It would be wonderful from a fans perspective to see this current stadium go out in a winning fashion, with another world series win. That banner would go up in the New Stadium and it would kind of be a good luck charm to me, you know…the first world series banner going up in the New Stadium is the series won in the old one.
Anway thanks for your interaction with fan, and I hope your new number sticks, works and becomes on of the ‘greats’ one day.
GO YANKEES.
btw, in case you haven’t noticed, that TINY pic beside my userID is a pic of you, an avatar I made…just a whole lot smaller.
phil,
I think you, Joba and Ian need to start should combine forces and have a super blog, TItled ” the big 3″ just an idea. think about it
I think that’s an excellent idea by niven311.
Also Phil, http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7704810 You’re on that list…I think you should be #1 though. I’m sure you’ve seen it already.
GO YANKEES!
ps- what guys have started showing up to camp? I know you, Jeter, and Posada are around…anyone else? Do the coaches ever show up early?
What a game that was. I couldn’t even breathe I was so excited when the Giants won.
Hey Phil,
Great site, I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am you will be in the Bronx this year and not the Twin Cities.
Yes, the Giant game was great, but now we need you and the rest of the Bronx Bombers to do to the sox’s what Eli did to the Pats…
Can’t wait to see you K Manny and Ortiz!!
All the best for 08
34 eh Phil? Work for me.
Nolan Ryan was a “G”
Phil, have you been working on any pitches this off-season? If so, what all is in your repertoire to date?
Upon arriving early, what has been your main focus? I would assume you are not throwing too often for the sake of endurance…
34? That’s like a coach’s number. 19 I tell you, 19!!!
Phil-
34 is a very good choice, although i still likes 19. But you can own the number 34 in modern baseball instead of sharing 19 with Josh Beckett. Get Joba to take 35 when Moose is done and then it will be great! the rotation in chronological order! 34 35 36.
Where do you rank that Super Bowl among the best games you’ve ever watched? And that play where Eli got out of the sack and threw down field to David Tyree making that catch against his helmet? I think that was the best play of all time.
I like number 34….When i come down to Spring TRaining im gonna try to get your autograph do sign for kids im only 15 but am a true yankee and phil hughes fan but your the main reason im coming down to Florida to see you play!!
Hey Phil
I thought you were superstitious about #5 – what made you change your mind?
Either way, as soon as it’s official, I will buy out all the Hughes jerseys in the store.
How’re you feeling in workouts? Do you feel 100%?
As a Chargers fan, I’m sure you weren’t too unhappy about the Pats losing!
Oops, I just saw your post about your reasoning……..that’s pretty cool. Nolan Ryan is a great pitcher to emulate and it’s always nice to pay tribute to Mom.
you gotta keep the 65-i think it’s real unique and its a pretty hot number. 34 is kinda boring IMO, but what do i know? I’m just trying to make sure the 65 i bought last june doesnt become outdated haha
when i think of 34 i think of nolan ryan and kerry wood, two power pitchers with vastly different careers.
it was a great game. were you rooting for the giants?
too bad you’re changing your number. 65 really suited you.
but everyones so excited for baseball! good luck
That’s cool- # 34 fits you well.
Once it’s official, I’m getting one!
I love my 65# Hughes jersey. And I’ll wear it for the next ten years. Thru a few titles and a few Phil Cy Youngs.
Good choice picking #34…Nolan Ryan was the man back in his day…dominant. The game vs Texas was just a flash of how good you can be…keep up the hard work.
Can’t wait for spring training…
Great choice Phil. I know we’ll be seeing #34 on the Yankee Stadium mound for years to come. All the best.
Settes–
I don’t think Phil will be taking Sean to Flemming’s on VALENTINE’S DAY…hahaha
Phil, if you switch to 34, do you plan to keep this number even if 45 becomes available in the future?
betsypaige–
Don’t buy all the Hughes shirts in the store…save one for me!! lol! 😉
7 is my favorite number…so is 9. Good choice on 34. I liked watching Ryan pitch, too.
I am glad that football is over……….I just can’t wait to watch you pitch this year!!
~Rebecca
awesome 34!!!, the number of Fernando “el toro” valenzuela from mexico. Damn he should be in hall of fame, anyway good luck on spring training phil!
The Giants played an awesome game and I was super happy they won, but now that it’s over, I’m ready for some baseball!
I think 34 is a good choice and you definitely got off easy just offering to buy dinner for Henn, but whatever works. Good luck in Spring Training! Can’t wait to see those pictures!
I KNEW IT! I CALLED THAT IT WAS GONNA BE 34!
PHIL, YOU WORE 34 IN THE 2006 PROSPECT ALLSTAR GAME-DID YOU PICK THAT NUMBER? OR WAS IT GIVEN TO YOU?
I want to see Phil take 21… Paul O’Neil, baby… Then Joba can take 22…
No way to 21….Yankees have kept that number off limits to retire some day or for Paul if he should decide to come back as a coach. I don’t expect to see 6 or 51 used by anyone either since they most likely will be retired too. I just hope they built a bigger wall in the new stadium for all the retired numbers …lol.
Maybe “34” will be retired some day ….hopefully not for a long, long time tho’ …
Go Yankees 2008 !!!!
i heard you liked number’s that end in 5 is that true? why don’t you take pavano’s number it’s available lol
Phil take whatever makes you comfortable, can’t wait for your first full season in the show. I’m hoping for big things from you and the team.
#34, Great Choice! Nolan Ryan is one of my fav all time players.
The Giants really deserved the win and what a defensive strategy played to perfection by the Giants’ coordinator.
The Giants got all the breaks needed to keep it close for the final and deciding quarter. That Manning-Tyree pass-catch will be one for the annals of football history.
Hats off to a great win!
34, Cool.
Enjoyed the game immensely. As a Jets fan it was wonderful to see to the Patriots lose, especially on the the biggest stage & on the brink of “immortality”.
Hey Phil you got some good company with 34, check it out….
Kirby Puckett
Rollie Fingers
Nolan Ryan
Bo Jackson
Clete Boyer
Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce (All wore 34 in HS, kind of weird)
Charles Barkley
Hakeem Olajuwon
Shaquille O’Neal (lakers)
Herschel Walker (college)
Walter Payton (The best one here)
Earl Campbell (college)
Dominik Hašek (Rookie season)
Could think/find any more…. You know any?
Hi Phil:
I’m glad to see you are staying. Johan who??? Good change to #34. “The Hughes Express”. Sounds good!! Is Joba changing his number too?
Hi phil
I am come from Taiwan, your fan. Regardless of your back
number does have the change, I all can continuously refuel for you.
This year prays for heavenly blessing your to have very good showing, refuels! !
Momma’s boy LOL, If your mom was an amazing pitching prospect I’d let her pick the number, its all about you phil!
Give it up for the G-men!! One of the greatest Super Bowls and let Boston cry. They got lucky in not having to face you guys last year and weren’t so lucky in avoiding NY this time! And 34 is great and you will certainly make it your own and not only Nolan Ryan having given it recognition but how can you beat the two numbers of Ruth and Gehrig?!! And you can be an equally great Yankee legend! Thanks for this blog, Phil. It’s great.
I just have to say this: Down kitty down! LOL
Interesting number..I like it because it means something personal to you. The Superbowl was great. The Giants Defense, Eli breaking that tackle..and the Tyree catch made it an amazing show. I am really happy to see Eli shine in the spotlight..and now he’s the Golden Boy. haha
Kevin.
Doesnt matter what # you have on your back as long as you keep pitching well.
Thanks for the info Phil… our house was pretty nuts after that play too. Always happy to see Boston fans given their due. Can’t wait for the season to start, since this is the ONLY time I’m going to get to the Yankees close to my hometown with the June visit to Pittsburgh. I live 2.5 hours from there but I’m taking vacation to make it to all 3 games, figuring I’ll get better seats then I ever could from Yankee stadium.
G-MAN!!!1 at some point its all about heart baby!!!!1
some pics will be coool!
Stay healthy Franchise!!!!!!!!!
Giants were incredible!
NY over BOSTON this year!
Hey Phil,
Just caught up on all your recent posts. And I *think* I have my voice back from Sunday night. All that aside though, I’m really excited about the upcoming season and REALLY happy you’re still with us. Best of luck in spring training and here’s to an amazing 2008 season for you and the team.
Cheers,
yo
phil-
are there ever any heated arguments between players in the clubhouse over different teams or rivalries in other sports?
Hey Phil ..
I hope you are watching the parade ..it’s awesome. I’m loving how some of the players are walking into the crowd and celebrating with the fans…like you Phil with this blog…making themselves accessible to the people who support them throughout the season. Just think….this could be you in OCTOBER !!!!! I went to the ’96 Yanks parade and it was totally wild ….soooooooooo many people. I was fortunate to get to the front to see the guys all go by. I’ll never forget it ….
Go Yankees 2008 !!!!
What a game indeed. I was so proud of the Gee Men when they proved all of them naysayers wrong. Now its time for spring training and baseball to start.
2008 Yankees make me proud as well I know you guys will have a great year and I hope you do get Sean Henn’s number. I have a feeling you will be around the Bronx for sometime to come.
Phil, Love the blog, I read every day. I have a blog of my own with some friends, you should check it out if you ever get a chance. It’s http://www.bigapplesports.net. We’re big fans of yours over there, and if you read our stuff you’ll see that we’re happy the Yanks passed on Santana to keep you, it was definitely the right call. We also linked your blog onto our page, so hopefully we’ll send some traffic your way. Good luck this year.
34 is a good number. Pretty cool that Henn would agree… did he ask you for cash? 🙂
Ya gotta wear a Giants jersey to Fenway this year!
That was a great game, i am so glad the giants won!
So I’m not even a Giants fan but being from New York you know I had to route for them over anyone from the Boston area….What is going to make it even better is when our Yankees beat the suxs and then we go win the WS this year…not sure why you changed your number I was a fan of the 65 but I doesnt really matter about the number on your back as much as how you pitch so whether its 65 or 34 people better just watch out cause its Hughes time….
Phil-
How come you wanted to change your number? I thought you were a fan of numbers ending in ‘5’?
That was an awsome game!!! After the Patriots got that second touchdown i thought the Gianta were going to lose but then we didn’t! Great game but i like baseball more and i am looking foward to our season. Hopefully it will be awsome too!!
P, how much did Henn charge you? A vacation to Disney?
Dinner at Flemmings? Man, you got off easy!
RE: superbowl. It was so exciting I couldn’t even breathe. I was shocked when we won in the last two minutes and Shady couldn’t hit Moss for the win. (hahahahaha)
New York rang Boston’s clock. Now we need our baseball team to do the same.
Did you see the parade? I was there and it was so much fun. 18 wins and one GIANT loss!
Go Yankees. Let’s keep bringing pride back to the Apple where it belongs.
Red Sox listen up: It’s GO time!
THE best Super Bowl ever, no doubt.
