Number Change

31 01 2008

I know I mentioned in the Q&A that I wasn’t planning on changing my number. Well that has changed. A number change is in the works. Not sure exactly what it is going to be yet, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Also, I saw a few comments about me being an Alton Brown fan, so I thought I’d come right out and say it. I can’t get enough Food Network! I’m not a great cook but that channel is just so entertaining.

Hey Phil: how did the number change come about?

Do you watch Top Chef? It’s really good.

Can’t wait to see you on the mound this summer! I am a season ticket holder and will be looking forward to your first game!

Also a big food network fan
Just please let us know asap what the number change will be so we can all get jerseys!

Who doesn’t want to learn how Twinkies are made? Food network rocks.

alton brown is the man…. phil, that’s definitely a good look

Me too Phil. Giada is so hot and she makes such great food. Alton is alright, but Bobby Flay is the man. No offense but good thing I bought Joba’s authentic before yours since your changing your number. I think I read somewhere he is keeping his because his friends number, who died, was 8 and he cant obviously have 8 so he needed to settle 62 (6+2=8). I think that was the case but I’m not 100% sure.

31 01 2008
bosoxsucyanksroc

phil you are killing me here
i’ve had your #65 jersey since july
i’d wait a year when some really cool numbers come available like 25, 35, and 45
i think 35 would suit you just fine

31 01 2008
jenrein88

I’m personally a fan of Throwdown with Bobby Flay.

31 01 2008
yanks4ever13

As long as you can follow a recipe, and not burn the food you’re making, you can be a great cook… that’s all I do! Just don’t tell people you followed a recipe.

robfromny

A number is a personal thing so im sure youre not really taking any
suggestions but 99 is a pretty sweet number. (65 was kind of ugly anyway.)

lol so my sister’s #65 Phil Hughes jersey is going to be a throwback? thats pretty cool.

31 01 2008
kumarwild

dude, thanks for the heads up! I was about a day or two away from ordering an authentic 65. But I guess you’d be able to pick out the hardcore hughes fan at the stadium with your old number. Alton rawks, but I find myself tuning in for Giada…

31 01 2008
yankeescrn

that’s awesome phil, I thought you could use a new number. You can rule out all the retired numbers:
1
3
4
5
7
8 (twice)
9
10
15
16
23
32
37
42
44
49

I’m kinda liking 44, but whatever you choose, I got your back. Good luck this year. I am so glad you are a Yankee.

what number would you want?
you should be a guest star on the food network.
show off your secret talent! as long as you dont start a fire.
you’re good to go

Phil, I feel ya. I’m not a cooking whiz, but after getting inspired by Ace of Cakes I did a Frankenstein bust cake and got an A on my final. Food Network FTW! lol

Hmm… Food network is great, though I’m not the biggest fan of the women shows on there (minus Giada De Laurentiis’s show). Some of my favorites are throw down with bobby flay, and probably the best is Iron Chef (and Iron Chef America as well). Favorite Iron Chef is Masaharu Morimoto. Ever been to his restaurant? I think he has one over in New York.

Ever watch Bizarre foods on Travel Channel with Andrew Zimmern? Most of that stuff is just gross, however some of the stuff I have actually tried. Some of the different Chinese/Vietnamese dishes that have been shown I have tried, like something called a “blood cake.”

31 01 2008

Get #50 back, Phil. I think that would suit you very well and would be an easy transition.

Have you gone to a block party in Brookly or Staten Island yet?Its the BEST food you will ever eat in your life!!

Good luck this year-and know that we KNOW your gonna be our ace in 2008!!

Congrats Phil for securing a spot in the rotation. Once I heard that Santana went to the Mets I could exhale. I only imagine how good it must have felt to you.

31 01 2008

Phil: I always go to Ferragosto in Bronx’s Little Italy (Arthur Avenue/Belmont) and it is a wonderful Italian feast! It’s usually in August and I have gone to a Yankee game and then off to Ferragosto. Or check out San Gennaro in Manhattan. There are so many food festivals in New York and check out the street fairs every weekend!

If Shelley Duncan can ride the subways with us after the game, you can come to the festivals…I will look for you there!

Hey what are you doing to me, I will have to sell my authentic 65 I got last year, but I appreciate the heads up. Make it a good number that you will keep !!!! Lol

31 01 2008

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE dont change your number!!!!!!!!!! It gives you character. You stand out. How many Cy Young winners have been #65? I dont know but it cant be a lot! I have a #65 t shirt, jersey, framed plaque from Steiner with the number on it. Please stay #65, its cool to be different.

31 01 2008

Take #57 if available, now that would be pretty funny.

Food Network is the channel I watch the most. Check out Anthony Bourdains show called No Reservations on the Travel Channel if food interests you. By far the best food related show out there. He’s a big Yanks fan taboot!

31 01 2008

Phil, was the decision to change your number yours, or did some people in the organization suggest it might be a better idea to take a more traditional number?

Top left picture there. Read other picture descriptions below… Was pigs blood however. I believe it was on bizarre foods, but it could also have been on anthony bourdain (sp?) show. But yeah, it is actual blood, with some seasoning and green onions and what not I think……. Think it is cooled too. I wasn’t paying attention to how it was made.

You should pick 12 since phillips is gone now

kierdogg585

hey dude,

Random question, do you play whiffle ball? We play it religously at school and Ive always wondered if being a pitcher would automatically make you nasty at whiffle ball, or is that just a stupid question…

PS- Lets go GMEN.. please tell me you agree with me

31 01 2008
dayanks65

Take Paul O’Neil’s #21, that is a great number for a pitcher. And then tell Joba to take the old Clemens #22. And then all you have to do is have them retired back to back down the line. Anyway, post the new digits when you make up your mind, I bought the closing of the stadium patch and the allstar patch to stich on the old #65 so glad I didn’t do that yet.

Hey Phil. Thanks for the update about your number….please keep us posted. I’m definitely getting a t-shirt when you get ur new #. I have a 65 one but it’s like 3 sizes too big anyway cause that’s all they had left…haha

31 01 2008

Phil, what made you change your mind?

Go with #19. Dave Righetti, Dick Tidrow, and Bob Turley all had great success with it.

31 01 2008
yanksfantilldeath

Phil,
I know you like 45, and the scum that currently has it is almost out the door… But if I were you I wont be near that #, you dont want to be linked in any way to that number IMO, just my 0.7 cents…

BTW, now what do I do with this 65 I have? LOL

Ask for 45, it’s not like Pavano will be using it anytime soon

What i had, had the distinct taste of liver, with some green peppers in it. I don’t know how the soup would taste, but I know vietnamese make some very good soup called pho’. You should try it some time.

I also ate some of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut … untill I saw that there was a fetus inside… Scared the shit out of me and almost threw up. Mind you I was eating this at night around a camp fire, so visibility was poor, and everyone minus myself and a few others were speaking viet, so I had not a clue what they were saying.

Are you going back to 50 Phil? I know you want a 5 and you wore 50 in Trenton and now that Larry’s not with the Yanks, it’s available.

While the balut will probably not be accessible to me (unless I go on a reality show lol), I have Vietnamese neighbors so maybe I can ask them where to go for good pho.

yanksgal07

I know it’s not a 5 ..but ..I loved Righetti and he did have quite a bit of success with #19. Loved the no no he pitched on George’s bday. Now that was one great gift to give The Boss !!!!

#21 is great but that’s Paul’s …I want it retired and the Yankees haven’t assigned it since he finished his career. I’m hoping for a Paul O’Neill Day at the stadium but I have a feeling that Paul doesn’t want one …he’s that type of guy …always the team and not about himself. I asked him if he would consider coaching and he replied “you never know” ..so ..the Yanks better keep his number at the ready …just in case.

Go Yankees 2008 !!!!!

31 01 2008

I say #13. I’m sure A-Rod wouldn’t mind………….

31 01 2008
rmoretti23

i’m boldly predicting something that adds up to 5, since the “cool” 5 numbers, 25, 35, 45, 55, are all taken (assuming Pavano can’t be bought off). 23 and 32 are retired, as is 5. I say it’s either 50, 41, or 14. I think either 50 or 14 would be cool. 41 reminds me of randy johnson and miguel cairo.

31 01 2008
vermilion23

Why are you changing it? Did you decide you wanted a new number? Or did some one want yours? Or were you told to change? #11 would be a solid choice.

31 01 2008

i’m with some of the other people here and say you go with number 11.. all of the greats have the lower numbers dude and they’ve been lucky for most of the players that have had em.

I think it is a great idea to change your number! A new number and a new season…Perfect!!
I cannot WAIT for baseball!! I go to 2-3 games a month! I sit in section 5–usually box 29..right behind the on-deck circle between Home and First…near Mayor Bloomberg. When I am in my apartment in LA, I watch every game! (I have the MLB package on the West Coast). I have a place in LA and a place in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. (NYC is my favorite!!–10yrs.)
A little baseball trivia for ya:
>>Who is the only player to be a member of baseball halls of fame in 3 countries??
>>When Sandy Koufax threw his fourth and final no-hitter against the Cubs in 1965, the Dodgers won the game.–1-0 with only one base hit (the record for fewest hits in a game for 2 teams). Who was the losing pitcher for the Cubs, and who got the one hit for LA??

By the way…..I hear you have a girlfriend. You should be free and unattached!! Enjoy NYC WITHOUT an anchor! You are way too young, hot and beginning a great pitching career to have a serious relationship!! (I have dated a few Major League guys…still friends with them–I know the scene–). Keep it light, Phil….focus on your career!!

31 01 2008

I think you’d look great with #45. That’s Carl Pavano’s number though. But I don’t think he will be around too much longer. ; )

@ davej480:

though I’m not the biggest fan of the women shows on there

what, you don’t think sandra lee with her crazy eyes & pendulous girls (creed bratton would approve!), with her pioneering use of cake mix and canned fruit, crockpots and microwaves, is a brilliant idea for a cooking show?

but seriously, tony bourdain and alton brown and mario batali rule. even if mario does hurt my heart by wearing crocs.

You can’t beat “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”. If you haven’t been there already, I would recommend going to the Mesa Grill in NYC. Its one of the several places owned by Bobby Flay. Great. great food. The pizzaria owned by Mario Batali (the name is slipping me now) is also fantastic. Authentic Italian food….

As far as the number change goes – Do what makes you happy. If you feel a change is necessary, go for it.

Hey Phil. I’m actually a chef so I’m not only a huge fan of yours but the Food Network as well. You and Cano are my favorite two Yankees by far. I was keeping my fingers crossed that you would remain a Yankee because I’ve been telling everybody how dominant you are going to be. I live in New Hampshire and am surrounded by Red Sox “fans”. Nothing but bandwagoneers here. I just got an autographed baseball and picture of you for myself for Christmas because I know that you are going to be one of those special players. I think it is so awesome of you to be doing this site and I cannot wait for the season to start. What’s with the change of heart on the number change anyway??

31 01 2008

Phil

didn;t you say you only like numbers with multiples of 5?

Pavano had/has #45 so I wouldn’t touch that number with a 10 foot pole.

Posada’s got 20.
Giambi’s got 25.
Wang has 40.
Matsui has 55.

I think it’s gotta be 30 or 50.

Giada is definitely the best on the Food Network. She’s beautiful and making Italian food so you really can’t go wrong there. And if you like burgers and that kind of diner food, check out Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Good thing I havent bought my Hughes jersey yet. I almost bought one the other day.

All of Bobby Flay’s restaurants are good. I work near Bar Americain so I go there all the time. Bobby changes the menu 4 times a year and has a menu change meeting where everyone in the place (all chefs and staff) get to taste it and understand why he’s introducing it (there’s a story behind each dish). Be sure to ask your server what is good and what’s the story. Getting to Bar Americain early is suggested…it’s ALWAYS busy!

31 01 2008

change is a good thing!! I love the Food Network and I love to cook with a Mother who is Spanish and a Father who is a Italian. It is in my blood… My restaurants in NYC I love Babbo, WD-40 and Rao. Sushi-Blue Ribbon and of course Nobu. In the Bronx best Italian food is on Arthur Ave. I will tell you a little New York Restaurant Survival Tip invest in the Zaget book working in the Fashion Industry you tend to take clients out alot! Good luck this year and glad you are here to stay!!!!

I can’t watch people in Crocs. I saw Sarah Jessica Parker out in the Village and her child had on crocs. It broke my heart that such a fashion icon would put potato shoes on her child.

So the Mario in Crocs thing bothers me immensely!

I have a feeling you’re aiming for # 45….am I right?

And you’re right- Alton Brown rocks!

BTW, if you’re ever in Savannah, go to The Lady & Sons. It’s Paula Deen’s place- they have great Southern food there.

31 01 2008

I will just take an old guess at this. I see the # being 39

Oh, if you like food shows, I suggest watching Top Chef. Good competition type television show there

Phil….You have no choice but to ask for #6.You know if they give you 6…You’ll be here a while.

Thats the # to have….Nothing wrong with being between joe d and mickey.

31 01 2008
mmaher23

Yeah, 6 would be a cool number, all the Yankee greats have single digit uniform numbers, but with Torre’s reign as Yankee skipper for 11 years and 4 championships, are they going to let you use it so soon after his departure?

I would opt for # 41 or 34. Seavar wore 41, and Nolan Ryan made 34 famous.

31 01 2008
mattnyytoronto

Phil I think you would like good with 33. I thought I saw you wearing that in the minors once? 33 or 36 if Bruney still wanted 33 (if he makes squad)

31 01 2008
King Tom

#30 would be cool, but that was Willie Randolph’s, and I got the impression that it was “unofficially” retired, like O’Neill’s 21. But then again, I don’t see anything wrong with 65, Phil.

Alton is great. If you think his show is awesome, check out his books. I thought I knew a little about cooking, but after reading even a few chapters, I realized I knew nothing.

31 01 2008
mpire344

Phil, if you can you should check out Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. Famous Michelin starred chef Gordon Ramsay goes around fixing failing restaurants. The show is addictive and very entertaining. The FOX network has even localized it for a US Version which is inferior to the UK Version but still good.

31 01 2008
bethnyyfan

I don’t like pitchers with single digit jerseys and 6 is Torre’s and I don’t see it being given away.

50 is good. I like that number.

My Suggestions Phil

1. #25: if you ask Giambi nicely, I think he would give it to You.. he knows he won’t be around next year anyhows.

2. #21: Because your the new Rocket.

3. #45: Don’t even ask Pavano for it, just take it.. he pretty much never gonna wear it again.

31 01 2008
yankeesfan28

Phil, get #69, 00, or 99

31 01 2008
betsypaige

Hey Phil

I liked #65, but as long as you are in pinstripes, it doesn’t matter to me. As soon as we find out, I’m going to run out and get my Phil Hughes jersey…..I’m glad I found out about this before I bought the stuff!

The Food Network is pretty cool – I’m too lazy to cook, but I love to eat. I also love to watch shows about food (and also read about food). Do you ever watch the Travel Channel? They’ve got some great shows – they focus, admittedly, on food and not necessarily cooking, but they’re a lot of fun to watch.

What was your reaction when you found out you weren’t going anywhere? I can tell you that I (and all Yankee fans) were very, very, very happy. I’m so thrilled that your still with us and we can follow your career from practically it’s inception.

31 01 2008

31 01 2008
dahouse292

hey phil i think u should hold on to 65 its a number that in 20 years we will say phil hughes was #65 like MJ was 23. instead of saying yeah phil hughes was 22 and so was roger clemens or something like that. it gives you independency.

31 01 2008
ryandaburninater17

Hey Phil if it is that bum Carl Pavano’s old number stay away, because i know you wanted to have a number last year ending with a 5, but that is a cursed number.

31 01 2008
dahouse292

as far as great numbers to change to, i am a sports number freak and am very supersticious so i wouldnt touch 45. 33 also has a very bad yankee history since david wells and alfonso soriano took off. bruney, javier vazquez, jaret wright for a year. 41 is solid, but i think the numbers to take are either 19, 21, or 22.
19 is intimidating like Beckett, and 21 and 22 are just great numbers to have (happen to be clemens’s numbers.) Final reccomendation- 19.

31 01 2008

The lower the number the better,,,,Go with Joe Torres old number 6 ,,,,awesome!!!!!!!!

31 01 2008

57 would be ironic, considering who just arrived on the Mets. 45 is bad, bad karma. There is a) no need to be associated with that number and b) we really don’t want you injured. Unless you are certain you can purify that jersey, I suggest that you let it sit under a rock for a while before considering it.

If you’re down with factors of five, 30 or 50 would be perfect. But I warn you: you’ve made a boatload of Yankee fans with 65 jerseys very sad. They now own the answer to a trivia question.

31 01 2008
Kaitlin

And who doesn’t love Food Network? Have you visited Chelsea Market, home of the Food Network studios? You should. I’m sure that if they knew, you could guest star or something! It’s on 9th Av. and 18th St. I think. I don’t know the address by heart; I’m a New Yorker.

Phil is a baseball player… o.O

(They say chicks dig the long ball…that’s a lie. Chicks dig the high socks, Phil. High. Socks. But not stirrups.)

31 01 2008
yankeesfutureis65

Man, that was a close call. With the Santana deal almost done, I was all set to order your jersey in a couple of days. I personally think 65 is a great number for you, but of course it’s your choice. You should take some lesser-used number and make it famous. 30 could be pretty cool.

31 01 2008
yankeesfutureis65

Oh, and of course this means that the Yankees’ future actually isn’t 65. Go figure.

31 01 2008
pressjem78

Phil,

You should go with 22. The numbers in the 20s are cool. Since Clemens isn’t on the team this year you should take that one. Plus aren’t you going to be 22 or am I dating you by a year?

Glad you will be on the squad permanently. Heck you are probably the #3 starter this year. NY fans can’t wait to see you do your thing for a full season.

31 01 2008
diamond23dust

I agree…I really like the high socks too 🙂

31 01 2008
ihatetheoldsn

Well, you don’t have many choices according to your “rules.” But you should definitely take that 45 so us fans can get that bad taste out of our mouths.

But a 25 is more befitting for a player like you, but I don’t think you’d be able to change your number two years in a row (I don’t know, I’m not a professional like you).

It’d be cool if Joba changed his number to 22.

31 01 2008
debeaux28

Phil,

Change your number to what YOU want it changed too.

Heck, you could wear the ‘number’ “Z”, and it wouldn’t change a thing!

22 would be too cliche… and i’d love it. i actually thought 65 suited you pretty well even though numbers that high are generally reserved for non-roster players. but still, zito has made 75 work so i thought 65 and 62 would be an interesting duo. anyway, pretty sure i’m safe to assume it will be something with a 5 in it, and who can blame you, i’d want joe d’s number on my back too.

31 01 2008

I say go with 57.

That way we can say that we got the best #57.

31 01 2008

I dont think phil wanted to change his number. I guess the organization came to him and recommended he should wear a lower number , I bet he gets the number 6…..im sure jeter didnt ask for the number 2, they probably told him they wanted him to have it…

31 01 2008

#6 will be retired and Torre will go into the HOF wearing it. I’d be surprised if they give it out based on that.

31 01 2008
diamond23dust

As weird as it sounds, I’m really excited to find out his new #…hopefully he doesnt leave us hanging for TOO long…lol

But, as everyone said before, what’s most important to me is that Phil will be back next yr. Everything else is secondary. 🙂

31 01 2008

Although i think that 65 suited you well!
how does a player go about choosing a number?
i think it would be interesting to read how you pick your new number keep us updated.

1 02 2008
jmac2336

Well I believe you like to the number end in 5. I think that is why you originally took # 65 b/c it was the lowest number available. I have to ask the question…is Moose or Giambi going to be traded? I know you can’t answer, but if anything wait until next year. Giambi’s contract will be over and I really don’t think the Yankees are going to resign him. Then you can take # 25. It is a legit # and would look sweet on the mound…

1 02 2008
jmac2336

Remember all the greats changed their number too…Mantle was 6 first and Whitey Ford was originally 19

1 02 2008
bigbronxballs

I’d be shocked if any Yankee ever wears the number 45 again after American Idle wasted, errr, wore it for the last verybody knows that TM’s locker is always kept empty, they should just refuse the number 45 to anyone…

I like the poster who said earlier that you should grab 21, then Joba can take 22. Thats a great idea…. I imagine 30 years from now, when I’m 60, and you and Joba are retired aand playing golf at Pebble Beach, those two numbers will hang side by side in Monument Park at the new Stadium!!!!!!!!!!!

PS- Go back to your post about what to serve at your SB party– I gotta great recipe (and man-easy) up there for a dip…

1 02 2008
bigbronxballs

Does anyone else find Peter Abraham’s last post on the Lohud site as offensive as I? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been reading that blog since Jan. 2006…

But it almost seems like he’s trying to pick a fight with Giants fans, who, I might add, are his bread and butter b/c 95% (guesstimiate) of Giants fans HAVE to be NYY fans…. Again, just a guesstimate. But really– how many Pats / Yanks fans are there out there ? Seems like he’s fishing for trolls, and it was getting ugly at last view. Some idiot stooped to calling Pete a ‘fat @$$’
which I think is totally uncalled for.

Yah, yah– I know… Its his blog and he can write whatever he blah blah blah… But its b/c of us his blog is the top-viewed Yankees blog in the world. Those 10 million hits a day he was bragging about is all of us!

It was the Pavano / Manning thing that really got under my skin… And then the way he lashed out at Rebecca O.P. (a talented, smart, well-versed writer who is about as a passionate Yankees fan and LOhud loyal as they come) for her first comments…

Alas, I digress….

1 02 2008
bxbomber587

Hey Phil, why dont you take 45? Pavano wont be using it. It’s just going to waste as is. If Pavano gives you trouble, tell big ol country strong Shelley Duncan to rip off his arms…they’ve about fallin off anyways lol

If you actually read Pete Abe’s blog you would know hes a HUGE Pats fan. So saying the Pats will blow out the Giants isnt out there and its not antagonizing G Men fans.

Phil go with 35.

1 02 2008
jakethesnizake

karcher151,

That would be impossible because Mike Mussina wears 35. Do you not know your Yankee numbers?

I’d go with 39. Darryl Strawberry did well by 39.

Why not just stick with 65? I thought it was cool that you and Joba had those high numbers…kind of resembled the youth injection, a new era if you will.

1 02 2008

Wait, what about 22? Rocket is gone and the Yankees don’t really have any cause to retire his number…

Pete Abe lost credibility with me last summer after the Old Timer’s Day he said he didn’t get the adoration and ovations for Donnie Baseball. Pete is a Noo Hinglander and always will be. He’s too Bahstin to report for a New York team, esp the Yankees. Now he’s dissing Giant fans. Poor poor poor.

1 02 2008

What about number 6? I know its bold taking those lower numbers, but if you are feeling a bit insecure, ask yourself one thing… what would Joba do?

1 02 2008
smcdonald5

What about you Ian and joba all pick numbers in a row like the Hanson Brothers of the movie Slapshot. I know players change teams all the time now, but you have to play like you are going to be a yankee for life. It would show a unified front. Even with the one individial thing about a uniform, you would be saying, I’m all about team. I’m gald they didn’t trade any of you guys for Johan and if you all had numbers in a row, it would let the yankees know that you didn’t want to go anywhere.

1 02 2008
bigbronxballs

Karcher, if you actually read my post, you would have understand what I meant. AND, Ive been reading Lohud since a month after he started it, back in 05 at Dec Winter Meetings.

And, I have no beef that he’s a Pats fan, you knucklenuts. I have beef with him flaunting it and rubbing it in his fan’s faces. The crack about Eli / Pavano was uncalled for. And, the way he trashed some of his most loyal followers in the post comments section was a joke.

Stay in your lane. Next time, before you make any silly accusations, read the WHOLE post. All you did was show your ignorance…

I love the Food Network too. Every Sunday is sort of ‘Food Network Day’ for me. That’s all that I watch that day. I think my favorite shows on there would have to be Barefoot Contessa (though the host can be a little annoying), Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee (she’s crazy but has some good ideas), Paula’s Home Cooking (love Paula), Everyday Italian, 30 Minute Meals and Guys Big Bite.

The number change is interesting, any idea why it’s being changed? Did you want a different number or did they just decide to change it?

From Idiot Ken Rosenthal who’s Mets Fan and Yankee hater
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7748328/Santana-deal-expensive,-but-necessary-for-Mets-
Ask yourself this: Who will be the Yankees’ future ace if none of their young pitchers develops into a top-of-the-rotation starter? Heck, who will be their Josh Beckett this season? The Yankees lack such an animal. And they quickly could regret allowing the Mets to steal Santana
2 02 2008
bethnyyfan

If Phil would have gone to Minny for Santana, Yankee fans would have been so upset. RS fans didn’t want to give up Lester and Jacoby. Mets fans could care less about their prospects.

I am just glad our big three are still in the clubhouse. And from what I understand about preseason predictions: no one is ever right. There was no way, last year, to predict all those hammy injuries to the Yankees that put them in the hole early and no one could predict them blazing back after the All Star break.

No one predicted the Mets collapse in September (but it was a beauty to behold) or the ROCKIES in the WS.

So predict away. I don’t care. I love my team, the New York Yankees, the winningest franchise in all of sports history regardless of anything else. And I’m glad we have our future in Phil Franchise, Joba, and IPK. I’m glad we have Andy and Mo and Po back in the saddle and there’s that matter of the best baseball player on the planet, Alex Rodriguez, and our too sexy for his number 2, captain Deejeter. Go Yankees!

Go Bronx Bombers!

Straw manufacturing requires several steps. First, the plastic resin and other components are mixed together; the mixture is then extruded in a tube shape; the straw may under go subsequent specialized operations; and finally the straws are packaged for shipment.

Whatever number you choose, i am stoked you are remaining a yankee.

Phil, if you like food you are in the right city. Whether you want to just eat the good stuff or take a crack at cooking, every ethnic cuisine imaginable is at your fingertips in NY. Enjoy your stay here, don’t ever let the media or anyone get to you. Remember, although the media may overshadow our voices, us real Yankee fans have your back 100% through the good and bad. We are happy you did not get traded away, as we appreciate home grown talent. Hopefully you enjoy yourself here, and we are looking forward to having you in pinstripes for a long time.

3 02 2008

Phil choose #11. If you are really going to change your number (which stinks for all of us who bought Phil Hughes t-shirts) then you should pick 11 because its the lowest number left. I think 11 would look great on you.

3 02 2008
manimal529

Joba’s numbers always add up to 8(some childhood friend died and he was #8 or something…) so rule out 17,26,35,44,53,62,71 and 80 for those of you who suggested that.

I think if you do successful as a yankee, even hall of fame kind of stuff, would you want to recognized as 11 or 99. I think you should go with 11.

Speaking of joba, Phil make him get a blog too!

ohh i love food network!! my dad happens to be an awsome cook. he comes up with the most interesting ideas for food. 3 02 2008
hughesctfan65

Hey Phil, so happy that you are staying with the Yanks! I vote that you keep #65, it gave you your own identity, I can’t remember anyone on any team having that number and making a name for themselves, I think it has some charm to it. But, if you are changing your #, then I am hoping for #50.
PS I have a caricature drawing that I did of you, that I would like to have you sign, are there any autograph shows that you will be at coming up any time soon?

3 02 2008
dahouse292

yeah that makes sense that joba took 62 then cuz yogi and bill dickeys 8 is retired, shelley is 17, jose molina had 26, moose 35, reggie jacksons 44 is retired, abreu had 53, and 62 is the next available that adds up to 8

Raissman: YES Make Hughes Look Like A Fool?

From Bob Raissman:
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/02/03/2008-02-03_yes_wont_inject_steroids_into_reports.html

Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network suits have already cast aspersions on George Mitchell’s report on steroids in baseball.

After watching YES’ “Hot Stove” feature on Phil Hughes, it appears, according to YES, certain allegations made about Roger Clemens don’t really exist. They are imaginary – just like the Tooth Fairy.

Much of the Hughes piece shows the pitcher going through his daily offseason workout regimen (lifting weights, etc.) at the Yankees’ Tampa facility.

At one point in the story, Hughes says: “God-given ability can only get you so far, then it’s up to you to maximize that. Even if I can just take a little bit of what Roger did for us last year, (to) see the way he works out … see the way he goes about his business, it kind of gives you an idea of what you need to do to stay in this game as long as he did.”

It seems the “idea” of what Clemens needed to do “to stay in this game as long as he did” is contained in Mitchell’s report. Or, at least, allegations of what Clemens did. In the report, Clemens’ former trainer, Brian McNamee, alleges that the seven-time Cy Young Award winner had been juicing since 1998.

If the Hughes feature was shot before the Mitchell Report came out, it would have been a good idea for YES – perhaps through “Hot Stove” host Bob Lorenz – to mention that fact. And if the Hughes interview was shot after the report was released, well, YES made the young pitcher look like a fool.

Someone should have edited the Clemens line out of the story. Unless, of course, it was left in on purpose to further discredit Mitchell’s report.
Source- Thanks to Steve L of Waswatching.com for the Link

3 02 2008
diamond23dust

I really don’t think this is a big deal at all. I saw the interview and never thought twice about anything Hughes said.

But for the record, the YES segment with Hughes was first shown on their Yankees Magazine show on (or around) 12/5. It was recently rebroadcast on Yankees Hot Stove. The Mitchell report was released on 12/13. So, the interview was definitely taped before the Mitchell Report was released.

But, I think the reporter was looking into things too much. Also, does anyone doubt that Clemens (regardless of what else they want to say about him), has a strong work ethic in the weight room?

3 02 2008
yanksgal07

Bob Raismann is Mr. Negativity. I usually laugh when I read his column because he HATES the YES Network. The only one who looks foolish the majority of the time is Bob Raismann with his obviouly bias comments. Even if the story was printed after the report came out …Phil is talking about the workout routine and everyone in baseball agrees it is probably the most difficult of any player. Players half Clemens age said they couldn’t keep up with him doing the routine.

Always take what BR writes with a HUGE GRAIN OF SALT !!!!

Go Giants …..Manning looking good so far on the first drives of the day ….I don’t even like football but I definitely have to watch since it’s New York ..

Hopefully the Yankees win it all in October and they will really shut up for awhile ……(hear that Phil …:) )

I emailed Bob Raissman telling him what a dope I think he is. All he had to do was call the Yesnetwork and find out when it was taped. I’ll you guys know if I get a reply. I won’t hold my breath.

I also asked him to print a retraction. Lets see if that happens.

I’d agree with a lot of the folks on here…. go with 11.

I also like 31 and 24…. good numbers for underperforming 80s squads.

Oh, and can you wear an Eli Manning jersey when you arrive for your first visit to Fenway? 🙂 Or maybe Antonio Pierce, I’m sure they love him up there right about now. 😀

4 02 2008

Phil-Why 34? I mean its cool that Henn would give that up to you. I hear you got it for the cost of a dinner. Thats cool. I thought you wore #65 because you wanted to wear a number ending in five, and every lower number ending in five was taken or retired (5 Joe DiMaggio, 15 Thurman Munson, 25 Jason Giambi, 35 Mike Mussina, 45 Carl Pavano, 55 Hideki Matsui). I like the 65. I thought it was unique. Like I said I guess 34 is okay and more normal but I’m a bit disappointed.
